Passenger posted joke about plane

The Hague - A young Dutchman apparently posted a picture of the downed Malaysian airliner on Facebook minutes before he boarded it, writing: "If it should disappear, this is what it looks like." Cor Pan, who appeared to be going on a beach holiday to Malaysia, posted the photo as a joking reference to another Malaysia Airlines flight that mysteriously disappeared over the Indian Ocean in March. A few hours later his flight too would disappear from radar screens, taking him and the other 297 people on board the Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur flight to their deaths in eastern Ukraine. Although there has

The airline will be like TWA: such a target that it eventually goes out of business. Air Florida did not survive long after that second crash back in the 80´s.

Malaysia Airlines is to refund fares for passengers no longer wishing to travel on the carrier, Sky News has confirmed. Previously booked passengers due to fly up to and including July 25 can seek a refund without incurring any penalty. The decision comes amid a wave of concern following the downing of MH17 over eastern Ukraine. It is unclear how many passengers will cancel their flights. Nevertheless, the refund will further harm the perception of the carrier both for passengers and investors. Shares in Malaysia Airlines closed down more than 10% on Friday. The Kuala Lumpur-listed company saw its stock fall more than 17% at one

“UNDER capitalism”, ran the old Soviet-era joke, “man exploits man. Under communism it is just the opposite.” In fact new research suggests that the Soviet system inspired not just sarcasm but cheating too: in East Germany, at least, communism appears to have inculcated moral laxity. Lars Hornuf of the University of Munich and Dan Ariely, Ximena García-Rada and Heather Mann of Duke University ran an experiment last year to test Germans’ willingness to lie for personal gain. Some 250 Berliners were randomly selected to take part in a game where they could win up to €6 ($8). The game was simple

Hillary Clinton said she may not run for president because the modern American presidency may just be too tough of a job. Acknowledging to PBS´s Charlie Rose that America´s president must be both the head of state and government, Clinton said the job of being president "has only gotten harder" and it is now an "all-consuming commitment." She said the president has to do "all of the symbolic and ritualistic aspects" of the job in addition to the "hard work of politicking, lobbying, governing, operating." She said that the "job has gotten more difficult" because all those roles, including dealing with Congress

MOSCOW — A top pro-Russia rebel commander in eastern Ukraine has given a bizarre version of events surrounding the Malaysian jetliner crash — suggesting many of the victims may have died days before the plane took off. The pro-rebel website Russkaya Vesna on Friday quoted Igor Girkin as saying he was told by people at the crash site that "a significant number of the bodies weren´t fresh," adding that he was told they were drained of blood and reeked of decomposition. The Malaysia Airlines Boeing-777 was shot down Thursday, killing all 298 people aboard. The plane was flying 10,000 meters above an

Hillary Clinton thanked the Republican establishment and its big business allies for taking on the Tea Party and defeating conservative candidates like Chris McDaniel in Mississippi´s June runoff. In a Thursday interview with Charlie Rose on PBS, Clinton said tea partiers and conservatives needed to be reined in. And she said it was about time the GOP establishment got a "wake-up call from the big business wing" that wants to continue the bipartisan big government policies that have made Washington, D.C.´s suburbs the country´s wealthiest "boomtown." "Finally, the Republican establishment and their business supporters have woken up," Clinton said, noting

Cash and jewellery is being stolen from victims of the Malaysian plane crash, Ukrainian politicians claim. The missile strike which brought down the MH17 flight left naked bodies strewn across fields surrounded by hundreds of possessions including children´s books, playing cards, slippers, letters and old vinyl records. But tonight it has been claimed that looters have descended on the distressing scene, stealing valuable goods from the 298 passengers and crew, who all died in the blast. Anton Gerashchenko, an advisor to the Kiev government, said: ´I have received information that terrorist death-hunters were collecting not only cash and jewellery of the crashed Boeing

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama plans to sign executive orders Monday prohibiting discrimination against gay and transgender workers in the federal government and its contracting agencies, without a new exemption that was requested by some religious organizations. Obama´s action comes on the heels of the U.S. Supreme Court´s recent ruling in the Hobby Lobby case that allowed some religiously oriented businesses to opt out of the federal health care law´s requirement that contraception coverage be provided to workers at no extra charge. Senior administration officials said Friday that ruling has no impact on non-discrimination policies in federal hiring and contracting. They spoke

Though when the gravity of the mistake became obvious, the Russian-backed insurgents backpedaled and claimed innocence. The statements of Girkin posted on his Vkontakte page on July 18 appeared to be a lot more confusing. According to Girkin,

A KREMLIN spy known as “The Demon” is believed to be one of the pro-Russian militants responsible for bringing down Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17. Ukrainian authorities identified Igor Bezler in a tapped phone conversation telling his Russian boss “we have just shot down a plane”. In the phone conversation, Bezler told military intelligence co-ordinator Colonel Vasyl Mykolaiovych Geranin that his men had gone to search the smoking wreckage for the pilots. But 40 minutes later, in another intercepted call between two men known as “The Major” and “The Greek”, the pro-Russian militants realised they had shot down a civilian airliner. “In short, it was

After President Barack Obama breathlessly addressed four different foreign-policy issues during a 10-minute statement, he summed up the state of a crisis-filled world in one sentence. "We live in a complex world and at a challenging time," Obama said. Obama touched on the laundry list of global flashpoints situations during a statement from the White House on Wednesday — the disputed elections in Afghanistan, the negotiations on Iran´s nuclear program, the Israeli-Palestinian crisis, and, finally, the conflict in Ukraine. The most significant recent development in these situations was the announcement of new sanctions on Russia shortly before the president spoke. Obama described those

Witnesses at the hearing argued about whether the House has standing to sue the president to enforce the law. “I’m very optimistic that this lawsuit will succeed,” Rivkin said in an interview. “I certainly expect there to be a propaganda offensive to
