The possible shootdown of a Malaysian Airlines 777 over Ukraine with the loss all aboard may represent a new and disturbing trend in that conflict. For Ukraine represents the flashpoint between east and west at its most immediate. (Snip) If Leading from Behind is working it’s not obvious. The president has spent the last few weeks laughing at everything. But now he is faced with something possibly new and disturbing; something which a speech or an executive order won’t handle. He must tread very carefully. Above all he must remember that foreign policy is not something he conducts out of

Weakness is prococative. Extreme weakness is extremely provocative. After it became clear that, geopolitically speaking, Obama was a pushover--or worse--Iowahawk remarked that Putin was doing doughnuts in Obama´s front yard. Unless repeated, this atrocity, like KAL-007, probably won´t lead to hotter war. Not yet. Putin´s rootstock is on the proverbial chopping block. And he might lose ´em. Miscalculated.

Obama always reminds me of a game show host the way he always jogs onstage and jogs down AF1 stairs. After his speech in Delaware we can now add wanna-be comedian. After a slow start to warm-up his audience about the downed airplane, he got right to his material about the Biden´s attractiveness.

"Thank you, Thank you. I´ll be here all week. Don´t forget to tip your bartenders and waitresses".

It is past due for the other branches of government and the American people to be told what is going on. No more narratives about videos, no more talking points, no more Soros, no more Susan Rice.

Pretty powerful stuff. If only.

This wasn´t yet another car bomb that killed a bunch of nameless, faceless Afghans in a Kabul neighborhood. American citizens were shot out of the sky by a puppet state of the former Soviet Union. It´s your move, Preezy.

Richard Epstein at the Hoover Institution has an interesting article on president Obama’s apparent reluctance to use certain kinds of force to defeat ISIS. (Snip) But too much of a focus on the president’s world view risks perpetuating the false problem between the doves and the hawks and emphasizing the bogus choice between those who are temperamentally inclined to peace and those who thirst for war. These characterizations are beside the point. In reality all good security decisions — even those that use war or violence as much as those which do not to attain their aims are ultimately violence

The resurgence of interest in the subject of Ebola can be summarized in one sentence: “nearly half of the cumulative case burden of Ebola in the three countries has occurred in just the last 21 days”. (Snip) The real ‘Who’ of course is Captain America. Since the end of the Second World War, and especially since the fall of the Berlin Wall, we’ve lived in the most religious of eras. One reason why the superhero movie trend is enjoying a boom is because our modern world, which has grown too sophisticated to believe in Christianity, really believes in the Marvel

In a few days president Obama will unveil his strategy to destroy ISIS to a waiting public. (Snip) However the basic outlines of the strategy itself have emerged from information already available to the press. A Los Angeles Times story suggests that Obama will rely on proxies to fight ISIS at three levels: on the ground, within the region and in the West. Kerry invokes comparisons to the Sunni Awakening, seeking to recall the days when al-Qaeda in Iraq was beaten by George Bush. Obama plans to organize the Sunni Arabs to fight ISIS.

Nothing expresses Putin’s determination to humiliate Obama as much as the kidnapping an Estonian intelligence officer in Estonia and abducting him to Russia only hours after the president assured the Baltics of Western protection. Max Fisher at Vox says: “This is bad: Russia ‘abducts’ Estonian officer after Obama says US will defend Estonia”. "On Friday morning, less than 48 hours after President Obama delivered a speech in Estonia warning that Russian aggression against Estonia could trigger war with the US and NATO, Russian security forces have seized an officer with Estonia’s state security bureau at gunpoint and taken him into

Nick Miroff of the Washington Post revisited a Venezuelan dream: the Ciudad Guyana. It was a modernist planned city in the wilderness. (Snip) Yes a dream — even a dream car or home — can be a nightmare if you can’t afford it. One of the things Obamacare promised to achieve is bend the cost curve downward. But that’s not happening. “Within the next ten years, U.S. healthcare spending is expected to hit $5.2 trillion, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services said Wednesday.” Expansion in health coverage has not been matched by a corresponding decline in the costs of

Much of today’s commentary revolves around the president’s inability to articulate a policy towards ISIS. The president was pressed in Estonia to outline his plans amid multiple crises, especially in the aftermath of Steven Sotloff’s decapitation. (Snip) When you lead from the front, you control the coalition. When you lead from behind, the coalition controls you. This indecision can be disguised under the pose of “sophistication” or “nuance,” where you claim to adapt your behavior to the “context”. But it is really a euphemism for spinelessness. LAKELAND | John Morgan, the leader of a campaign to pass a constitutional amendment to legalize medical marijuana, made his case to an audience Thursday during a forum at Lakeland´s Harrison School of the Arts. A few hours later, Morgan stood on a stage at a much different venue — the Boots N Buckles Saloon in North Lakeland — and used considerably saltier language in seeking votes for Amendment 2. Peter Beinart’s widely quoted article in the Atlantic, Actually, Obama Does Have a Strategy in the Middle East, has the tagline “the president is neither a dove nor a hawk. He’s a fierce minimalist.” (Snip) He ends on a note of touching faith: “Barack Obama didn’t become president by tilting at windmills.” No, Obama became president because people like Beinart believed he would take them to a different place than where they now stand, each hour bringing a new humiliation and crisis. Roger Simon wrote on Twitter: “Not a single #liberal friend of mine wants to discuss politics now. They’re humiliated

The escape of the Filipino UN contingent from the clutches of the al-Nusra has a tragic-comic postscript. The Associated Press reports: ”The Philippine military said Monday that a UN peacekeeping commander in the Golan Heights should be investigated for allegedly asking Filipino troops to surrender to Syrian rebels who had attacked and surrounded their camp.” (Snip) The Fijians are now in a tight spot. I wrote yesterday, it is in Nusra’s interest to let the Fijians go. If they want to incentivize surrender they must make it safe. Lately the al-Qaeda affiliates have reversed the usual payoffs. “What’s in a name?” Shakespeare asked. Everything, it may turn out. The Washington Post describes the efforts of Samaritan Ministries to offer an alternative to Obamacare. (Snip) It is here where the God of Mathematics touches down upon the earth. One of the reasons faith-based health care Ministries might work is self-selection. Cynics may scoff at the morality clauses of Samaritan Ministries, but such morality clauses are probably written on the handout your doctor gave you under the heading “lifestyle changes” when your blood pressure turned up too high and the lab came back with alarming cholesterol and sugar counts.

Churchill came under intense scrutiny and was fired by the University of Colorado at Boulder. What concerned Kelly most in the first part of the interview was that “little Eichmanns” comment, the argument being that Eichmann played a role in horrible atrocities even though he didn’t directly carry out the Final Solution, which he views as similar to the financial

WASHINGTON--US President Barack Obama will tell the American people on Wednesday night that he plans to order strikes against Islamic State forces in both Syria and Iraq until the group is ultimately destroyed. Free money for everyone! With weak job growth, rising poverty, and the rich continuing to devour nearly all economic growth, it´s an idea that is gaining more credence. Arguments for a universal basic income (UBI) — in which everyone without exception would receive an equal stipend — have flourished in policy-centric areas of the internet, including The Week. Advocates of UBI see it as a blunter, more effective means of reducing poverty and shrinking the inequality gap. But even if UBI proponents are right on the merits, Tyler Cowen argues that the politics of the issue are not favorable. Under
