NEW YORK— President Barack Obama will spend time in New York City Thursday, raising campaign money for the Democratic primary. Obama will arrive in the city about 4 p.m. He’ll first attend a private event, then later in the evening attend a house majority PAC round table before departing about 9:15 p.m. The stop follows a visit to an interstate bridge in Delaware that’s been closed because of tilting supports as Obama presses for more spending on roads and other public infrastructure programs. The House passed a measure this week to keep transportation aid flowing to states through May. Obama

DENVER — A federal appeals court Friday struck down Oklahoma´s ban on same-sex marriages. The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the ban violates the U.S. Constitution´s guarantee of equal protection under the law for everyone. The court stayed its opinion, pending an expected appeal. A three-judge panel of the Denver-based court ruled 2-1 in the Oklahoma case after the same panel ruled June 25 that Utah´s ban on same-sex marriage violates the Constitution. The ban was challenged in 2004 in lawsuits by two Tulsa-area lesbian couples, the day after Oklahoma voters approved adding it as an amendment to

Two weeks after Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 vanished on its route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing earlier this year, Australian citizen Kaylene Mann read a statement to the media mourning her brother, Rod Burrows, who had been on that flight. On Thursday, less than six months later, the Mann family was grieving again after the names of Malaysian Flight 17 victims began to be released. (Snip) President Obama said Friday that at least one American citizen was killed: Quinn Lucas Schansman. The victims included 189 Dutch citizens, 44 from Malaysia and 27 from Australia. President Barack Obama said one American was among the nearly 300 killed in an disaster that could dramatically escalate the crisis in Ukraine. Obama said evidence so far indicates that Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down by a surface-to-air missile from an area controlled by Russian-backed separatists. He noted it wasn´t the first time the separatists had shot down planes in the region, adding that a "steady flow of support

A Justice Department fraud prevention program came under fire Thursday for allegedly morphing into actively pressuring banks to deny financial services to businesses for political reasons. Operation Choke Point functions as a partnership between the Department of Justice (DOJ) and various other federal agencies which deal with bank regulations, specifically the Treasury and the SEC. The objective of the project is to choke-off fraudulent businesses from accessing financial services, in an effort to protect consumers. The controversy, however, is over allegations that the DOJ is pressuring financial institutions to decline doing business with so-called “high risk” industries which line up

Has food - especially junk food - played as large a role in the messaging of any other presidential administration as it has in that of President Obama? Obama has long complained about feeling hemmed in by the presidency, and has made a habit lately of escaping the White House by walking down the street, skipping town and meeting with regular Americans who have written him letters or have some connection to an issue he plans to discuss. The common thread in almost all of these excursions? Food or drink. And nothing fancy. The latest adventure came Thursday, when Obama

Mr. Christie, the Republican governor of New Jersey, reveled in repeated pleas to run for president, nodding as a middle-aged man here told him that he alone possessed the “rough-and-tumble style” necessary to tame Washington. “You know how to play that game,” the man said. “I do,” Mr. Christie replied. Some media reports say there were 23 Americans on MH17, a scheduled flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, and President Obama said earlier that efforts were underway to determine if any Americans were aboard. As of 11:30 p.m. U.S. Eastern Daylight Time, an airline spokesman in the Malaysian capital said by phone he still could not confirm whether Americans were among the dead. The most significant recent development in these situations was the announcement of new sanctions on Russia shortly before the president spoke. Obama described those
