The IRS Scandal and Media Bias
Commentary Magazine, by Peter Wehner

Original Article

During his appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Bloomberg’s Mark Halperin offered this observation: Because when any government agency, particularly one as powerful as the IRS, engages in something that even people sympathetic to the administration looks weird and suspicious, it’s incumbent upon all of the national media to aggressively ask more questions. The Republicans in Congress are asking questions. I think with a different administration, one that was a Republican administration, this story would be a national obsession. And instead, it’s getting coverage here and a few other places. But it deserves a lot more questions. It certainly does, and

After the Mississippi corruption, do you honestly think that the GOP would have a problem with IRS targeting of Tea Party groups?

Yes, #2, and afraid of the dictatorial leadership´s control of it and every other agency. They are well aware of how the Left deals with opposition.

Place: Soviet Russia
Time: 1932
Cast: M.N. Riutin, an "Old Bolshevik", "expelled from the Party..." 1930...for opposition to Stalin´s radical collectivization (among other things).

Scene: Riutin delivers 190+page document, known as "Riutin Platform" at secret meeting. It´s title: "Stalin and the Crisis of the Proletarian Dictatorship."

Essentially Riutin called for the destruction of "Stalin´s dictatorship."

Of course, this was seen as a call for rebellion, revolution. Why would these Old Bolsheviks ever imagine a revolt? /sarc

Arrests began post-haste.
All who´d attended the meeting were ousted from the Party.

A bunch of some of the most famous Bolsheviks soon were arrested, interrogated, ousted, ostracized.

Those who read it, copied and passed it on, those who knew about it but did not read it or pass it on, everyone as the circle widened became suspect and were "called in for questioning."

Fear flooded in to the Party leadership and lower ranks.

Thereafter, did ANYONE really dare to criticize Stalin? Did anyone dare to be associated with a critic on any level?

This was the opening scene of the coming Great Terror.

Meanwhile the iron fist of Comrade Stalin tightened around the necks of all his minions, and Lubianka prison began to fill with political prisoners.

No. The American Leftwing and indeed almost all Democrats, do not really dare resist, oppose, investigate. They know just how fierce a tyrant´s retaliation can be.

(see "The Road to Terror: Stalin and the Self-Destruction of the Bolsheviks, 1932-1939", J. Arch Getty and Oleg Naumov)

The Legal Argument for Gay Marriage
Just Hit Its First Major Bump
Slate, by Mark Joseph Stern    Original Article

For better or for worse, the constitutional theory providing equal rights to gay people is entirely authored by Justice Anthony Kennedy. As everybody now knows, Kennedy penned the trilogy of gay rights opinions that lie behind an unbroken streak of judicial wins for gay marriage in the states. At first glance, today’s 10th Circuit opinion affirming the invalidation of Oklahoma’s marriage ban continues this streak seamlessly. But just below the surface of the ruling lies a bear trap that could mangle the legal theories that have brought gay marriage so close to the finish line.

Two months ago, I left the White House after six years of working for President Obama. As anyone who’s had the privilege of serving a sitting president can tell you, the job is both tremendously rewarding and incalculably demanding. No advanced degree or job experience truly prepares you for the tidal wave of responsibility and the sheer gravity of history that beckons each day. The Arab Spring. Newtown. Hurricane Sandy. The Affordable Care Act. It is one of those jobs that never really leaves you. Until it’s time to leave. Working at the White House naturally invites interest from the media, and

More Miserable Anti-Israel

The New York Times´ coverage of the ongoing situation in Israel, which began with the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teenagers, continued this past week to be marked by intense anti-Israel bias in tone and labeling, and overwhelming emotionalism over the deaths of Palestinian civilians in the crossfire (Israeli deaths from terrorism rarely if ever merited such heart-felt treatment). After the tragic deaths of four young Gazan boys on a beach, the Times let its photographer hint at something sinister: "Children, maybe four feet tall, dressed in summer clothes, running from an explosion, don’t fit the description of Hamas

Under normal circumstances, among the first to swarm a plane crash are trained professionals. Even under the best of conditions, they’re painstakingly methodical: They seal off the site to prevent tampering, videotape, examine, preserve parts of the wreckage and send bits off for analysis. They never know which part of a wing or fuselage might tell the tale, so every small find is crucial. But the circumstances of Thursday’s Malaysia Airlines plane crash were anything but normal. It was obvious from the moment a giant explosion sounded in eastern Ukraine, spawning smoke that billowed black across the horizon. Among the first

Israel’s economy is booming. So why is the United States still giving it $3.1 billion a year? That’s the question on the minds of some of Israel’s biggest supporters in Washington. U.S. taxpayers have provided the Israeli military that invaded Gaza on Thursday night with more than $121 billion since the state’s founding, subsidizing about 25 percent of the tiny country’s annual defense budget in recent years. That subsidy has increased even as Israel’s economy has experienced a growth spurt and the country has discovered stores of natural gas. Indeed, President Obama last year pledged to begin early negotiations to extend the

Outside the Israeli city of Ashkelon, dozens of Merkava tanks stand in a broad field lined with olive trees, their guns pointing towards the Gaza Strip less than five miles away. In the coming days or even hours, Israel’s leaders will have to decide whether to order these mighty machines of war to advance into Gaza and transform Operation Protective Edge from an air to a ground offensive. If so, the casualties and risks of the campaign against Hamas would inevitably rise. Benjamin Netanyahu is a cautious prime minister, deeply reluctant to send troops and tanks to fight in Gaza. It is at times like these, when he is pushed kicking and screaming into the crucible, that Obama’s callowness shows. For his supporters, that jejune, jocular air has been a plus for almost six years. For the rest of us, it has served as a liability and an irritation. Yesterday, it became a wholesale embarrassment. On the perpetual-campaign trail, the pattern is familiar. Trotting up to the podium, the president fist-bumps the audience’s stragglers and smiles a toothy and humble grin at those who catch his eye. While speaking, he responds to obsequy with obsequy — “I love you too!” he

At a political event in Wilmington, Delaware, on Thursday, President Obama devoted only 40 seconds to the shooting down of the Malaysian airline, his first statement to the world following the news. His emotionless reference to the attack as ‘a terrible tragedy’ seemed disconnected from the horrific moment, particularly as he immediately reverted to script to praise his administration and criticise Republicans. It was a far cry from President Reagan’s 1983 fierce denunciation of the Soviet shooting down of a Korean airliner as a ‘crime against humanity’. LOS ANGELES — Actor James Garner, whose whimsical style in the 1950s TV Western “Maverick” led to a stellar career in TV and films such as “The Rockford Files” and his Oscar-nominated “Murphy’s Romance,” has died, police said. He was 86. He was found dead of natural causes at his home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles Saturday evening, Los Angeles police officer Alonzo Iniquez said early Sunday. Police responded to a call around 8 p.m. PDT and confirmed Garner’s identity from family members, Iniquez told The Associated Press. There was no immediate word on a more specific cause of death. Garner had suffered a stroke in May 2008, just weeks after his 80th birthday.
