A Ukrainian official said a Malaysian passenger plane carrying 295 people was shot down Thursday over a town in the east of the country. Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to Ukraine’s Interior Minister, said on his Facebook page the plane was flying at an altitude of 33,000 feet when it was hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher. A similar launcher was seen by Associated Press journalists near the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhne earlier Thursday.

Obama won´t read about this incident until tomorrow morning. Then the noon press conference (right before he gets on Marine 1 for the golf course) will contain the usual pablum about what a tough world we live in.

Tiger Woods is going to petition to just play the back nine twice each round and skip the front nine altogether. Woods went out on the back nine on Saturday and birdied his first two holes before dropping his second-straight 38 on the front nine with a triple bogey and a double bogey. He´s played the front nine in 7 over this week as opposed to 4 under on the back and now he´s just two clear of 64-year-old Tom Watson and 19 back of leader Rory McIlroy. It has not been pretty. If cable news network CNN goes up for sale CBS will consider purchasing it, said CBS Corp Chief Executive Officer Leslie Moonves on Thursday, reports Reuters. CNN, The Cable News Network, is owned by Time Warner, Inc., which is seeking federal approval of a merger with 21st Century Fox Inc., owned by media magnate Rupert Murdock. While attending a meeting of the Television Critics Association, reporters asked Mr. Moonves whether he wanted to buy CNN if Fox decides to sell the channel. DENVER--- Three more people in Colorado have been diagnosed with the plague after coming in contact with an infected dog whose owner contracted a life-threatening form of the disease, state health officials said on Friday. Last week the department said a man in an eastern Colorado county whose dog died of the plague had been diagnosed with pneumonic plague, a rare and serious form of the disease. The man remains hospitalized, but authorities have not released his condition. The three people in the latest reported cases had "mild symptoms" and have fully recovered after being treated with antibiotics, the department said, adding

ST. AUGUSTINE BEACH, Fla. — The Obama administration is reopening the Eastern Seaboard to offshore oil and gas exploration, announcing final approval Friday of sonic cannons that can pinpoint energy deposits deep beneath the ocean floor. The decision promises to create plenty of jobs and thrills the oil industry, but dismays environmentalists worried about the immediate impact as well as the long-term implications of oil development. The cannons fill waters shared by whales and turtles with sound waves 100 times louder than a jet engine. Saving endangered species was the environmental groups´ best hope of extending a ban against offshore drilling off

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-Lawyers for the Florida legislature´s Republican leaders and county elections officers argued on Thursday that a judge who threw out their 2012 congressional redistricting plan could not require that boundaries be redrawn in time for the November elections. But the attorney for the League of Women Voters, which successfully sued the state for illegally favoring incumbents, said it still is possible to fix the boundaries, even though early absentee ballots for the August primary have already been sent out. The brief hearing before Circuit Court Judge Terry Lewis underscored the political uncertainty and logistical quagmire resulting from last week´s

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida’s political landscape is being upended by a landmark legal ruling that one legal expert says could influence the way other states draw their congressional districts. A circuit judge ruled late Thursday that the state Legislature illegally drew Florida’s congressional districts to primarily benefit the Republican Party. Judge Terry Lewis ruled that two of the state’s 27 congressional districts were invalid and that the map must be redrawn. Justin Levitt, a law professor at Loyola Law School who tracks redistricting cases, called the decision a “big victory” for Florida’s voters that could be a model for other states to

It is at times like these, when he is pushed kicking and screaming into the crucible, that Obama’s callowness shows. For his supporters, that jejune, jocular air has been a plus for almost six years. For the rest of us, it has served as a liability and an irritation. Yesterday, it became a wholesale embarrassment. On the perpetual-campaign trail, the pattern is familiar. Trotting up to the podium, the president fist-bumps the audience’s stragglers and smiles a toothy and humble grin at those who catch his eye.
