The era of intended
adverse consequences

“Too often … we enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought,” President Kennedy famously asserted before Yale’s class of 1962. Denouncing political debates that “bear little or no relation to the actual problems the United States faces,” Kennedy urged policymakers to Think Again before engaging in “false dialogues” that “distract our attention and divide our efforts.” He believed “the very future of freedom depends upon the sensible and clearheaded management of the domestic affairs of the United States” and a “vigorous economy” — quaint concerns 52 years hence. Because today’s political discourse is so dishonest and domestic affairs so muddled

Comments:
From the article:
"...... we’re living in an era of manufactured social strife. Creating policy impasses, politicians pick unnecessary fights over our constitutional system’s commitment to individual liberty and the rule of law, transforming dissenters into black-hearted villains with sinister agendas.....Like the Hobby Lobby case, the escalating humanitarian crisis on the Southern border would have been avoidable if the government had merely followed the law. After all, what distinguishes America is our healthy respect for the law. "

Excellent article.

The essential exhortation is "to think" and to think this was said by a Democrat! Almost no Dems would agree today; Kennedy would be shunned, ignored, silenced.

The American people are assaulted with never-ending images IN ORDER TO invoke emotional responses, NOT thought. This is why we see pictures of sweet little children on the border, and only the torso down of the older "kids".

And these are is the same Dem/Leftist tactics used with regard to Hobby Lobby and so many other situations thrust upon us by a regime intent on utterly corrupting our Republic. It the Bolshevik lexicon, this is "agitation and propaganda."

Some people will be roused from their sleepy amusements... the Dem/Lefties count on them slipping back into apathy and self-indulgence because they always do.

Maybe "self-interest rightly understood" will alarm more people into permanent wakefulness and THOUGHTfulness.

Confronting evil in Gaza -

Asked by a convert to distill the Torah’s essence, Rabbi Hillel — Judaism’s great sage — taught, “What is hateful unto you, do not do unto your neighbor.” Like the Golden Rule that roots most ethical traditions, Hillel’s first-century precept was aimed at inspiring a better society, one that brought order, dignity and peace to an otherwise cruel and warring world. That too much of the world still inhabits a darker moral universe — refusing to Think Again about its preference for violence, hate and death — is perhaps humanity’s greatest challenge. As Nazi-era refugee Albert Einstein understood, defending our

Imagine a July 4th tradition like Hollywood’s where each year the Oscars pay homage to fallen stars. Liberty-loving Americans would fete public servants who’ve honored Thomas Jefferson’s rule to “leave no authority existing not responsible to the people.” Might celebrating trustworthy stewards inspire Americans to Think Again about our Founders’ insights, ingraining a culture that prizes democratic accountability and lawful government, the one that transformed our risky political experiment into history’s freest and most prosperous society? We’d be celebrating two recently passed stalwarts who put country and constitutional order before party: Sen. Howard Baker, the Senate Watergate Committee’s ranking Republican,

President Obama was nowhere to be found during the beginning of a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine commission in Wales on Thursday. Obama was "noticeably absent" from the start of the meeting, according to a White House pool report, although U.S. Ambassador to NATO Douglas Lute was in attendance.Obama was late to the Ukraine meeting because of other meetings on Afghanistan and a meeting with King Abdullah of Jordan, according to a White House official.Back at the Ukraine meeting, leaders were addressed by NATO Secretary General Anders Rasmussen, who urged Russia to stop the "illegal" annexation of Crimea. “We call on Russia

Barack Obama stands apart from other modern American Presidents in many ways. (snip)the widespread view that he is the coolest President ever. This supernal coolness is not new. In his autobiography, Dreams From My Father, the President wrote that in his teenage years “I tried my best to be cool at all times” (p. 82). However, leaving aside the contradiction inherent in trying to be cool, it is possible that Barack Obama’s teenage experiences may have left him psychologically, and perhaps even neurologically, incapable of performing fundamental tasks of his current position. Much of the appeal of coolness is its

Last Wednesday, at a ceremony to appoint Texas lawyer Shaarik Zafar to be special representative to Muslim communities, Secretary of State John Kerry said it was the United States’ Biblical “responsibility” to “confront climate change,” including to protect “vulnerable Muslim majority counties.” Kerry said Scripture, in particular the Book of Genesis, makes clear it is our “duty” to protect the planet and we should look at Muslim countries “with a sense of stewardship of earth,” adding, “That responsibility comes from God.” And here you thought all along that “Uncle Joe” was the resident crazy in the Obama administration.

It is one of the world´s most famous ancient sites. And tonight it seemed Barack Obama could not resist a chance to see Stonehenge for himself - ordering his helicopter to make an unscheduled stop on his return home from the Nato summit. After flying out of Newport in south Wales, Marine One made an unannounced landing at Boscombe Down Airbase in Wiltshire. The President´s motorcade then weaved its way for 20 minutes across Salisbury Plain, to the amazement of passing drivers. Under grey skies, the President then embarked on tour of the prehistoric stone circle and henge with Heather Sebire, the curator

As he mulls a presidential run in 2016, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush´s friends and associates are urging top Republican fundraisers and strategists to avoid throwing their lot in with another candidate until Bush makes a decision. "Before you do anything, let us know," was how one GOP insider described the message from Bush´s team to the Wall Street Journal. Bush´s associates aren´t actively contacting potential supporters, the Journal reports, but they are answering inquiries from fundraisers and strategists

Up to 70 veteran USA Today journalists, editors, and others were laid off Wednesday, and reports claim that the newly unemployed were "marched out by security" and within 15 minutes had their email accounts shut off. The layoffs came as no surprise after the Gannett Company followed the lead of many other companies that have already separated and spun off their dying publishing business into separate companies. It was only a few weeks ago that Gannett did the same. USA Today is Gannett´s flagship publication and enjoys the highest circulation of any other American newspaper. Nonetheless, The New York Times reports that

Legendary comedienne Joan Rivers died on Thursday — exactly a week after she was rushed to a Manhattan hospital when she stopped breathing during a routine throat procedure, sources told The Post. She was 81. Rivers’ daughter, Melissa, had been keeping vigil by her mother’s bedside at Mount Sinai Hospital as her condition failed to improve since she went into cardiac arrest on Aug. 28 at Yorkville Endoscopy. She was moved from the intensive care unit to a private room on Wednesday. The State Health Department has launched an investigation into the clinic. A funeral for Rivers has been planned for Sunday at

Secretary of State John Kerry´s speech at the groundbreaking ceremony for the U.S. Diplomacy Center in Washington, D.C. Wednesday included an intriguing aside that appeared to reference the upcoming 2016 presidential election. Kerry spoke after remarks by each of the five former secretaries of state in attendance: Henry Kissinger, James Baker, III, Madeleine Albright, Colin Powell, and Hillary Clinton (Condoleezza Rice and George Shultz were not present.) After extolling the accomplishments of each of the five former top diplomats, Kerry said, "Join me, all of you, in thanking five of our six living former

LAS VEGAS — Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Thursday the U.S. should become what she called the world’s 21st-century clean energy superpower, during remarks resembling both a campaign speech and a call to action at the annual National Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas. Clinton cast the threat of global climate change as real, and “the most consequential, urgent, sweeping collection of challenges” faced by the nation and the world. “The data is unforgiving,” the former New York senator and first lady said to a standing room crowd of more than 800 people at a Las Vegas

The home-cooked meal has long been romanticized, from ’50s-era sitcoms to the work of star food writer Michael Pollan, who once wrote, “far from oppressing them, the work of cooking approached in the proper spirit offered a kind of fulfillment and deserved an intelligent woman’s attention.” In recent years, the home-cooked meal has increasingly been offered up as the solution to our country´s burgeoning nutrition-related health problems of heart disease and diabetes. But while home-cooked meals are typically healthier than restaurant food, sociologists Sarah Bowen, Sinikka Elliott, and Joslyn Brenton from North Carolina State University argue that the stress that
