Microsoft set to axe 18,000 jobs
BBC News [UK], by Staff

Posted By:Attercliffe, 7/17/2014 8:40:38 AM

Microsoft is to cut up to 18,000 jobs marking the deepest cuts in the technology firm´s 39-year history. The bulk of the cuts, around 12,500, will be in its phone unit Nokia, which Microsoft bought in April, the firm said. Microsoft pledged to cut $600m (£350.8m) per year in costs within 18 months of closing the acquisition. The cuts are much more severe than the 6,000 initially expected. Chief executive officer Satya Nadella, who took the helm in February, wants the firm to shift its focus away from software to online services, apps and devices.

Satya Nadella was born in Hyderabad, India. You think a few more jobs may flow to India?

I think its foolish to announce a layoff like this and then take your time implementing it. I have seen it before -- work comes to a standstill as everyone tries to figure out if they want to work hard to help the company succeed given they may soon be with the competition after getting the boot.

If you have MSFT, sell it.

Should have mentioned: Mr A recently added certifications for Linux I and II. I´m now using Linux and it´s not that difficult, especially considering my brain is fading--I´m using it right now.

Big plus: it´s free, as are updates. And I can still use Firefox and Ixquick.

I guess Bill won´t need all of those H-1B visas now that he´s got this huge pool of talented people to choose from. Maybe he´ll even share them with the others who push for them.

They axe 18,000 jobs and at the same time are lobbying for cheap foreign labor in the form of H1-B visas. Congress would have to be nuts to go along with what Microsoft is pushing them to do.

Natya is no Steve Jobs, and neither is Tim Cook. So they are going to focus on the nebulae, well fine, but that is not a very clear mission, and no one knows what or where that is.

A bloody conflict in Gaza,

The Israeli Defence Force yesterday issued a mocked-up picture of the Houses of Parliament with missiles raining down on the building, alongside the words: “What would you do?” It is a good question. Indeed, as the IDF continues its offensive in Gaza, causing huge suffering among the civilian population of the benighted Palestinian enclave, it is one that Israel’s critics need to answer--but can’t. [Snip] In similar circumstances, what would we do to protect our families and territory? We should also remember how this particular set of circumstances developed. Delta Air Lines and US Airways have suspended service to Israel until further notice, citing reports that a rocket landed near Tel Aviv´s Ben Gurion Airport. A Delta Boeing 747 from New York was flying over the Mediterranean headed for Tel Aviv on Tuesday when it turned around and flew to Paris instead. British air accident investigators will retrieve data from the black boxes of crashed flight MH17, UK Prime Minister David Cameron has said. This follows a request by authorities in the Netherlands, where the Malaysia Airlines plane flew from before crashing in Ukraine. The experts, based at Farnborough, will download data from the flight recorders for "international analysis". Some 298 people, including 10 Britons, were killed in the crash. Mr Cameron tweeted: "We´ve agreed Dutch request for air accident investigators at Farnborough to retrieve data from MH17 black boxes for international analysis." The announcement comes after Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond joined other EU ministers

FALFURRIAS, Texas—Governor Rick Perry’s much-anticipated announcement of the deployment of up to 1,000 members of the Texas National Guard to portions of the Texas border with Mexico left many issues unresolved. As the deployment appears to be focused on the Rio Grande Sector of the border, the most looming unresolved issue is the fate of the rest of the border. A pernicious, little-known Obama administration policy – one that that incentivizes adult illegal immigrants to use children as human shields to escape arrest and deportation at the border – largely has escaped the media’s notice. This same policy is driving the historic surge of children at the border, as everyone from coyotes to illegal immigrant adults already in America seeks to use children to guarantee their safe passage into the country, or to protect them from deportation if they are illegally living here. The flood of illegal immigrant children, piling up like human debris on the US border, won’t stop

The Senate hasn’t been so polarized since Reconstruction; the House has not been so divided since around 1900.
