Border Chaos Changes
Election Year Politics

American Spectator, by Ross Kaminsky

In a Gallup poll released Tuesday, the percentage of Americans who say that immigration is the nation’s most important problem reached 17 percent, the highest level in eight years and the second-highest ever recorded by that polling organization. It’s easy to scoff at the fickleness of the American public, taking a long-term problem such as immigration (legal or otherwise) from rating as most important by 5 percent of the population to 17 percent of the population in just a few weeks, notwithstanding the images of young unaccompanied children flooding into Texas. After all, border security and immigration didn’t suddenly become three

The collapse of a cease-fire plan for Israel and Hamas would be a moment to test the Jewish state’s super-weapon — Caroline Glick. Or, more precisely, her idea of a one-state plan for peace in the Middle East. Glick laid out the plan in a book called “The Israeli Solution.” Her idea, which I wrote about in March, is to absorb into a single state — Israel — all of the West Bank and the Arab and Jewish populations who live there. It’s as controversial as an idea can get. She leaves aside Gaza, where there is no Israeli presence and which

They´ve blown it again, big time. They just can´t help themselves. During the Bush years, the open-borders movement won over bleeding hearts in the White House but alienated the American public with radical displays of La Raza ("The Race") militancy, desecrated American flags and Che Guevara shirt-wearing, fist-thrusting marches across the country. Left-wing public relations consultants taught the amnesty mob to tone it down, turn the flags right-side up and stop threatening Reconquista. But the phony red-white-and-blue dye job didn´t last. The movement´s true extremist, entitled roots can´t be concealed for long. On Monday, leading illegal-alien journalist turned activist Jose Antonio Vargas engaged

U.S. firefighters, emergency

Think fighting fires is dangerous? Try doing it in a war zone. Spurred by the violence in Israel, a dozen firefighters and emergency responders from across the United States have deployed to the embattled country, where they are supporting their Middle East colleagues on the front lines as part of the Emergency Volunteers Project. Speaking by phone from Sderot, Israel, near where residents perched on hillsides to watch missiles streak toward the Gaza Strip, Rockville resident Robert Katz said his decision to drop everything and fly halfway around the world was easy. “I’ve been doing fire and rescue since I

Sen. Elizabeth Warren now says that last year’s government shutdown was about birth control. Warren did not make the remark in an off-the-cuff setting. She made it in a prepared speech. Warren said it on the floor of the Senate while supporting a bill that she knows has absolutely zero chance of becoming law. “Remember last year’s government shutdown that nearly tanked our economy?” Warren asked. “That fight started with a GOP effort to hold the whole operation of the federal government hostage in order to try to force Democrats and the president to let employers deny workers access to birth control.” Warren is

Gotta hand it to ‘em: They’re all-in on the immigration mega-pander. The prudent thing to do before the midterms would be to focus on stopping the border crisis, to “prove” that Obama’s serious about enforcement before a new push at comprehensive reform next year, and then do some sort of very limited amnesty to show immigration activists that O’s on their side with the promise of more to come after the current uproar has quieted down. Instead you’ve got Harry Reid mumbling about the border being secure, Pelosi doing her “won’t somebody think of the children?” shtick, and now Obama’s inner

The search is on for two presenters to join Whoopi Goldberg and Rosie O’Donnell on ABC’s daytime chat show, while a backstage battle for control has left Barbara Walters out of the driver’s seat. When ABC’s long-popular daytime program The View returns in September for its 18th season, creator Barbara Walters will no longer have an ownership stake, and longtime executive producer Bill Geddie won’t be at the helm. “He won’t be back,” a person familiar with the inner workings of the show told The Daily Beast, confirming one of the major changes--including the enforced departures of panelists Sherri Shepherd

Federal employees, like all Americans, are entitled to hold passionate political beliefs. Most executive branch federal employees, however, may not engage in certain political activities, thanks to an anti-conflict of interest principle enshrined in a federal law called the Hatch Act. To wit, President Bush requested the resignation of his GSA administrator in 2008 after the US Office of Special Counsel determined she had violated federal law by participating in a video conference with Karl Rove and sending out partisan letters. (The New York Times was scandalized at the time, though I strangely can´t find their editorial calling for Kathleen

NEW YORK – Conservative filmmaker Dinesh D´Souza wants to know why his latest docudrama "America: Imagine the World Without Her" was buried by mega search engine Google. "I certainly hope this is not intentional. But how long does it take a technical company to fix a technical problem? “D´Souza told FOX411. “We´re trying to be patient, but this is making it harder for people to get accurate information about the film." Here´s the technical problem: When one normally searches the name of a current movie plus the word “movie” in Google, showtimes and more information for the film typically show up. “America”

Seventeen percent of people in the United States say immigration is the nation’s top problem, according to a Gallup poll released Wednesday. That´s up from 5 percent in June, and is the highest number Gallup has registered for immigration since 2006, when 15 percent said it was the nation´s most pressing problem. Gallup’s new survey found immigration is virtually tied with “dissatisfaction with government” as the nation´s top problem. The economy and unemployment rank below immigration and “dissatisfaction with government" as top problems, the new poll found. Only 8 percent now rate healthcare as the top problem, down from 16 percent in January, when

The headlines last week were all about the potential windfall: A second appraisal of works in the Detroit Institute of Arts´ collection had come in and the number was several orders of magnitude larger than the first. The city needs a valuation because the museum´s collection is in play under the current municipal bankruptcy proceeding. Back in December, Christie´s had come in with $454 million to $867 million, that low-high figure the equivalent of an auction "estimate" ranging between a number below which a work won´t sell and another representing its likely maximum hammer price. How would you feel if someone promised to give you a car, and then reneged on that pledge? That’s how all Americans should feel when it comes to ObamaCare -- because Barack Obama’s failed and discredited campaign promise to lower health insurance premiums has cost the average American family an amount equal to the price of many new cars. During his 2008 campaign, one of then-Senator Obama’s most audacious promises was that his health plan would reduce premiums by $2,500 for the average family. His repeatedly made his pledge on videotape; you can view those promises here. But health insurance premiums

The Emergency Alert System, the latest version of a program first established in 1951, blasts out emergency messages in the event of local weather emergencies, but can also be used to warn Americans about terror attacks and major natural disasters. Francis proclaimed, “Despite the large influx of migrants present in all continents and in almost all countries, migration is still seen as an emergency, or as a circumstantial and sporadic fact, while instead it has now become a hallmark of our society and a challenge.” Emmer McCarthy for Vatican Radio said Francis expressed his concern for “the tens of thousands of

The First Lady of these United States has declared war on Chick-fil-A. It seems the home of plump juicy breasts and hot buttered buns has run afoul of the new Smart Snacks in School program. The program is a component of Mrs. Obama’s Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. The new government regulations require snack items served in public schools to have less than two hundred calories. That includes vending machines, lunch rooms and other campus food venues. And that’s really bad news for kids at South Carolina’s Socastee High School. They’ve just learned they will no longer be allowed to buy Chick-fil-A

It had to come sometime, and it came in one very bad week for the Democrats: that the many big problems with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama finally grew too great for the press to ignore. Thanks to our friends at Washington Free Beacon, you’ll never have to watch a Barack Obama speech again. Reason being, this 76-second video shows you everything he’s going to say. He will: Tell you it’s great to be back in whatever town he’s in. Tell you to have a seat – twice. Appreciate the introduction. Love you back. Recommend building more roads and bridges. Say the economy grows from the middle out. Say the wealthy have to “pay their fair share.” Blame Republicans in Congress for everything. Encourage you to vote rather than boo.
