Congress nears an impasse
on immigration crisis

CBS News, by Rebecca Kaplan

With House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., shooting down a bipartisan bill to address the crisis of unaccompanied children crossing the southern border Wednesday, it looks increasingly likely Congress might wind up at an impasse just before their five-week summer recess. Until now, Pelosi had said that potential changes to a 2008 law that prevents speedy deportations of unaccompanied children from countries other than Mexico and Canada was not a "deal breaker" for Democrats. That´s what two Texas lawmakers, Republican Sen. John Cornyn and Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, are aiming to do with their bill that would mandate the same

That bill if passed will do nothing to stop the invasion by illegal aliens. We all know that obama will obstruct the implementation of any speed up in deportations. The bill is just to give cover to Congress that they have done something about the "border crisis". My guess is that if the bill is passed deportations will actually decrease because the foolish American public will believe the law will be enforced and that will be the end of story. The msm will help bury that fact.

#1, I believe that the Dems and Obama are desperate to get this mess out of the news. Obviously, Nancy Pelosi has another mission and who knows what that might be. If the bill can be passed, Obama will sign it. He´ll frown and complain, but he´ll be very glad to get it on his desk.

The PR damage to the Democrats is done, however. They´re not going to be able to get the "war on women" back on front pages and the airwaves.

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Georgia´s two Republican candidates for US Senate, David Perdue and Jack Kingston, are facing off in the polls Tuesday, and they are taking different approaches with their last-minute strategies. Businessman David Perdue spent the last day of his runoff campaign on a fly-around tour of the state, and greeted his Columbus supporters on one of his stops. Perdue has been on the road for two weeks with an RV tour, and he says he feels good about Election Day because Muscogee County voters agree with him on important issues. Oklahoma Man Struggles for Three

The Obamacare woes continue as an Oklahoma man spent three agonizing months trying to cancel his health insurance plan. David Emanuel’s 65th birthday last April, when he became eligible for Medicare, spurred him to cancel his private health insurance plan. He called BlueCross BlueShield to terminate the plan and was met with resistance. “They said, ‘You can’t do anything until healthcare.gov tells us that you can drop it,’” he said. He phoned healthcare.gov, but no one answered. Emanuel showed KJRH-OK the call logs displaying how long he waited to speak to a representative from the health care exchange. The call logs show

The White House press secretary, Josh Earnest, faced a minor media revolt at his daily press briefing Monday after he criticized a Washington Post story for its reliance on anonymous sources. Several reporters at the briefing challenged Earnest´s critique by pointing out White House officials regularly insist information be anonymously attributed to members of the administration in conference calls and other communications. "You criticize anonymous sources but we have anonymous sources from you every day," one reporter said. "How can you criticize that when that´s what you basically give us every day, except for the briefing?" Earnest responded sarcastically. "Except

Data mining is digging into your health. Actuaries predict your life span. Banks track your spending habits. Now, your employer can tell whether you’ll have diabetes a year from now. And the federal government is encouraging businesses to use that information to tell you how to eat and exercise, to “data mine” for your own good and the employer’s bottom line. Medical records, social media, credit card records and new activity tracking gadgets like Fitbits are being used to assess your riskiness to yourself and to the cost-conscious health care system. The heartbroken father of a 17-year-old Dutch girl who died in the crash of Malaysia Airlines 17 has written an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, excoriating him "for murdering my dear and only child." Elsemiek de Borst was on her way to Malaysia on vacation with her mother, stepfather and little brother when the Boeing 777 was shot down Thursday, killing all on board, said her father, Hans de Borst. The Montana Supreme Court on Tuesday will publicly reprimand a judge who gave a lenient sentence to a rapist after suggesting the 14-year-old victim shared some of the responsibility for the crime. District Judge G. Todd Baugh of Billings is scheduled to appear before the court in Helena, where one of the justices will read a censure statement prepared in advance. Baugh will likely get an opportunity to address the court, and the censure will then go into the record, state Supreme Court clerk Ed Smith said Monday. JERUSALEM -- Israeli media say an Israeli soldier is missing following a deadly battle in the Gaza Strip. A defense official confirmed that there is a soldier missing. The official spoke on Tuesday on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the incident with media. The media reported that the soldier was traveling in an armored personal carrier that had come under attack over the weekend. The reports did not say if the soldier was dead or alive. Hamas earlier this week claimed it had captured an Israeli soldier. Israelis did not deny or confirm the claim. For Israelis, a captured

“Why do you think President Obama´s job rating is falling, even though the economy is recovering?” the interviewer asked. It´s a fair question, even though the economy declined 2.9 percent in the first quarter, even though most jobs created in June were part-time, even though labor force participation remains low. The fact is that the economy is growing, however slowly, jobs are being created and the unemployment rate is heading down toward what economists consider full employment. And still the president´s job rating languishes. What´s wrong with the question is an assumption embedded within it, that what voters seek most

The U.N. agency that runs schools and hospitals in Gaza is supposed to be neutral. But it gave 20 rockets found in one of its buildings to cops who many believe report to Hamas. When 20 rockets were discovered last week in a U.N.-funded school in Gaza, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees was quick to condemn the storage of weapons of war in a building meant to educate children. But rather than turn them over to a third party, or arrange for their disposal, the agency, known as UNRWA, handed them over to the local police force,

The tragic fate of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, believed shot down by a missile in eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 on board, has cast a new light on the series of gambles Russian President Vladimir Putin embarked on in late February. At that time, Putin sent military intelligence troops in unmarked uniforms to take control of the southern Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea. Three weeks later, Russia annexed the region. As Russian-speaking Ukrainians farther north in Donetsk and Luhansk stormed administrative buildings, demanding independence from Kiev, Russian intelligence officers started slipping across the border to help organize the militias. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy wasn’t out to make news when he addressed the annual conference of the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and devoted most of his 50-minute speech to the Magna Carta, which turns 800 years old in 2015. But Kennedy did let on that he doesn’t belong to the school of Constitution-worshipers who base their legal doctrines on what they glean to be the original, literal meaning of every word and phrase in the nation’s founding document.

Convinced that their region has suffered as much Obama administration meddling as it can possibly stand, Israel and Egypt took the extraordinary step earlier this week of jointly rejecting requests by US Secretary of State John Kerry to involve himself in ceasefire talks with the terrorist group Hamas. Israeli and Egyptian diplomats both claim Egyptian efforts to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas collapsed as a direct result of Secretary Kerry’s announcement he was prepared to join the talks. He apparently made the announcement without first consulting either of the parties. The diplomats are convinced that their own

A pernicious, little-known Obama administration policy – one that that incentivizes adult illegal immigrants to use children as human shields to escape arrest and deportation at the border – largely has escaped the media’s notice. This same policy is driving the historic surge of children at the border, as everyone from coyotes to illegal immigrant adults already in America seeks to use children to guarantee their safe passage into the country, or to protect them from deportation if they are illegally living here. The flood of illegal immigrant children, piling up like human debris on the US border, won’t stop

WASHINGTON —Polarization and partisanship are a plague on American politics. Political scientists have found that the two parties have each grown more ideologically homogeneous since the 1970s. The Senate hasn’t been so polarized since Reconstruction; the House has not been so divided since around 1900. As measured by laws passed, the current Congress is on track to be among the least productive in our republic’s history. How did this happen? One of the main causes has not gotten enough attention: the party primary system. The reasons behind the shocking primary defeat last month of Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, who
