California Death Penalty
Unconstitutional, Federal Judge Says

New York Times, by Staff

A federal judge in Southern California ruled Wednesday that California’s death penalty was unconstitutional. The “dysfunctional administration of California’s death penalty system,” wrote Judge Cormac J. Carney of United States District Court, has led to “inordinate and unpredictable” delays in the execution of inmates. The delays, the judge wrote, means that sentences are carried out against only “a trivial few of those sentenced to death.” In essence, he wrote, sentences by juries have been transformed to “life in prison, with the remote possibility of death.” In making his ruling, Judge Carney vacated the death sentence of

Here we go, again. I was in Kalifornia when they last stopped executions which allowed later for certain killers on death row to be released.

I think life in prison w/o possibility of parole would be a fate worse than death.

Typical leftoid reasoning: Cumber the process with unconscionable delays, then use the delays as the basis for tossing reasonable jury verdicts. Leftoid version of jury nullification.

Oh goody...I just love spending 75K per year on healthy young murders and millions on sick imprisoned murders to keep them alive for possibly 60 or 70 years. Arresting officers could save taxpayers billions with a single bullet at time of arrest.

Sen. Ted Cruz, Texas Republican, told a crowd of 3,000 at a conservative summit in Dallas that Americans fighting with Islamic State militants should be exiled from the country saying, “we need to not let into this country any American who is fighting with ISIS.” But some conservative politicians say that banishing American jihadists doesn’t go far enough, and that those who leave the country to fight for militant groups like the Islamic State, Hamas, or al Qaeda should be stripped of their citizenship. On Friday, former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown, who is running for a U.S. Senate seat in neighboring New Hampshire, called for

Detroit - In a trial set to open in the federal courthouse here on Tuesday, nothing short of this city’s future is at stake. If Judge Steven W. Rhodes approves a blueprint drawn up by Detroit officials to eliminate more than $7 billion of its estimated $18 billion in debts and to invest about $1.5 billion into the city’s now dismal services, it will mark the beginning of the end of the nation’s largest-ever municipal bankruptcy. The outcome will set this troubled city’s new course for the coming decades, perhaps longer. In deciding whether the city’s plan is equitable, feasible and in the best interest of creditors, Judge Rhodes will send significant messages

The man arrested after Philip Seymour Hoffman died on Feb. 2 from a lethal combination of cocaine, heroin and other drugs avoided jail time on Thursday. Robert Vineberg was never charged with any connection to Hoffman´s death, but there were connections between the two. Vineberg had said that he and Hoffman were friends, but had lost touch in recent years. Some speculated that he was Hoffman´s drug dealer, though he insisted that he did not provide the drugs that killed the actor. The 58-year-old Canadian musician pleaded guilty in Manhattan Supreme Court on Thursday to drug possession and faces five

Downton Abbey is getting extra political this year: the fifth season of the hit period drama takes place in 1924, the year of Britain’s first Labour party government and, consequently, a year of dramatic social change at the Crawley estate. Cast members such as Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Jim Carter and Laura Carmichael are all returning, while guest-stars Anna Chancellor and Richard E. Grant will introduce a few new characters into the mix. Stray water bottles, however, are not expected to return.

David Cameron is expected to reject calls to force terror suspects to relocate, after being warned that it could breach their human rights. The Prime Minister will announce a series of emergency measures to tackle extremism, amid growing concerns about the threat posed by British jihadis returning from Iraq and Syria. However, it is “very unlikely” that he will reintroduce powers that would force jihadists to move away from their homes, despite requests from both police and security services. The Government has been advised that the move could be subject to legal challenge, and the measures have also been opposed by

In the wake of the televised beheading of American journalist James Foley, there have been urgent calls among some in the media for an intensified U.S. military response to the Islamic State group — also known as ISIL — responsible for Foley’s gruesome murder and a host of other barbaric atrocities across northern Iraq and Syria. There is also, understandably, some alarm, because ISIL has racked up a string of tactical victories in the Sunni-dominated regions of Iraq, culminating in the taking of the giant hydroelectric dam near Mosul. The principal complaint among the armchair quarterbacks is that the U.S. failed to neutralize the growing

Germany´s defense minister said the arms would be sent in three shipments, starting next month, and would initially be enough to equip a brigade of 4,000 Peshmerga fighters. "This is in our security interest," Ursula von der Leyen told reporters in Berlin. Germany joins other European countries who have pledged to provide arms to the Kurds fighting the Islamic State group that has swept into northern Iraq in recent months. In total, the shipments will include 8,000 G36 assault rifles

President Obama’s foreign policy is in “absolute free-fall” amid the rise of the Islamic State, and Western allies no longer view the U.S. as a leader in confronting religious extremism in the Middle East, the House intelligence chairman said Sunday. Rep. Mike Rogers, Michigan Republican, said the White House sat on its hands while Islamic fighters grew in influence, recruited abroad and seized swaths of Iraq and Syria. “Europe has obviously stood up and said, we have a huge problem. [U.K. Prime Minister] David Cameron came out and said, not only do we have a problem, here’s my plan to deal with it,” he told “Fox News Sunday.”

In the past two weeks, President Obama has twice interrupted vacation and fundraising trips to take presidential planes to Washington for a brief period, only to turn around and fly back to his earlier location — once after just a few hours in the White House. Why the peripatetic travel schedule? Well, there was a wedding and a bachelor party involved — and an expensive mix of socializing, work, and vacation. On Thursday, the White House announced Obama would travel to Westchester, N.Y., on Friday to attend a Democratic fundraiser. The president would then travel on to Newport, R.I., later in the day for another fundraiser.

On TV, incompetence is funny, sometimes hilarious. Jackie Gleason made a career of it on the old “Honeymooners” show; Tom Haverford is absurdly incapable on “Parks and Recreation”; and Michael Scott brought the Peter Principle to new heights in “The Office.” But in real life, incompetence can be dangerous, even life-threatening (think a real-life Homer Simpson actually in charge of safety at a nuclear power plant). That’s where America finds itself nearly six years into the presidency of Barack Obama. There’s no question Mr. Obama has all but checked out. I guess he really was multitasking out on the golf course. The President’s team has been hard at work behind the scenes, coming up with a strategy … well, maybe we should say plan, to address the nation’s many challenges. Spurred by President Obama’s climate action plan, the Department of Energy is pumping out new standards for refrigerators, dishwashers, air conditioners, ceiling fans, furnaces, boilers, water heaters, lamps and many more appliances. The administration says the standards will not only help the planet but also stimulate the economy by saving consumers money on their energy bills that they can spend elsewhere. Some time ago I contrasted the reaction a conservative would get if he were in the same room with the two most consequential politicians of the 1990s, Bill Clinton and Rudy Giuliani. Because I am a black conservative, someone wrote asking me this great question. “What is it that compels some black men and women to cling to, and follow people like Sharpton, Jackson, Wright, Obama, Spike Lee, Black Panthers, Holder, etc.?” I have pondered the same question. Some black folks embrace victim status because it provides cover for their laziness and irresponsible lifestyles. Black Judases preach a false, evil gospel of victimhood-ism for profit. Some blacks are racist, pure and simple. I believe that a majority of black Americans simply have not been exposed to unfiltered conservatism – to blacks articulating how blessed they

Short of world war, it’s rare that a chief executive goes through a foreign policy month like President Obama’s August.
