WASHINGTON – Has President Barack Obama “checked out”? It’s one thing if hardened critics like Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly ask whether the Obama presidency is “imploding,” as she did last month , citing a string of foreign policy debacles and domestic scandals. Or if Republican lobbyist Ed Rogers says Obama “seems to have taken something like an early retirement,” as he did in his Washington Post blog earlier this month, finding that the president’s recent speeches reveal “a state of mind that suggests he has checked out.” It is another, however, if the chief U.S. commentator for the Financial Times,

"Checking out," is that the presidential equivalent of voting "present?"

It´s too kind to accuse him of checking out, because he is doing significant damage to the country and the rest of the civilized world that depends on America for the stability we have all enjoyed since WW2.

I´ll bet he is doing it on purpose.

A careful listener to President Obama’s comments Friday on the destruction of a Malaysian airliner over Ukraine could discern where the president places responsibility for what he rightly called “an outrage of unspeakable proportions.” (Snip) What was missing from the president’s comments was a clear moral conclusion about the regime of Vladimir Putin or an articulation of how the United States will respond to the killing of 298 innocent people, other than by “investigating exactly what happened and putting forward the facts.” An atrocity committed as a byproduct of Moscow’s attempt to violently break apart a sovereign nation demands a

KIEV, Ukraine —Ukrainian officials on Saturday accused the rebel militias that they blame for the downing of a Malaysia Airlines jet of moving bodies and tampering with evidence, steps that could make determining the exact circumstances of the disaster far more difficult. Almost two days after Flight 17 was downed by a missile over rebel-held territory in the east of Ukraine, representatives from the Kiev government had still not been allowed access to the mammoth crash site, and rebels were preventing local emergency services personnel from gathering evidence, Ukrainian officials said. “They’re playing a game with the state. President Obama announced Friday that an American was among the dead in the Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 crash in Ukraine. Quinn Lucas Schansman was a dual citizen of the United States and The Netherlands, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on Twitter. Photos on social-media accounts show a fun-loving college student who enjoyed hanging out with friends, had a girlfriend and liked to relax with a beer or a smoke, especially after exams. Some news reports say he was 19 when he died. Schansman was on his way to meet family members who were vacationing in Malaysia when his plane was

Add another Senate race to the tossup list: Colorado. A new Quinnipiac University poll shows Sen. Mark Udall, a Democrat, trailing Rep. Cory Gardner, a Republican, by 2 percentage points, 44-42 percent. By a 49-40 margin, voters say Udall does not deserve to be re-elected. Colorado has come into play only recently. President Barack Obama carried the state in 2012 by 5 percentage points, but the new survey showed state voters today disapprove of of the job he’s doing by a 58-39 percent margin. And voters give Gardner better marks on the economy, saying by a 46-35 percent margin the

Washington — Is racial animosity behind some political criticism of the Obama administration? That’s what Attorney General Eric Holder said on Sunday. The exact phrase he used was “racial animus,” which he said motivates some of his and Obama’s political opponents. (Snip) At the right-leaning "Hot Air!" Noah Rothman used even tougher language. The Obama administration long ago perfected the art of cultivating the sense among its defenders that lingering racism inspires most of its critics, according to Mr. Rothman. If the US was still so racially sensitive, why did it reelect an African-American president?

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) has now controlled much of Iraq for over a month. The group has been prolific in its abuses even during this brief reign of cruelty: In recent weeks it´s crucified its opponents in Syria, executed scores of police officers in northern Iraq, threatened archaeological sites, and even destroyed hookah tobacco. This over-the-top brutality is a reflection of ISIS founder Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, once one of the world´s most notorious terrorists. Investigators said the 90-pound dog was tethered to a pole when the attack happened around 7:30 p.m. Sunday. They said the boy was trying to give the dog a hug when it mauled his neck and face. "The child went to give the dog a hug, and it latched onto his face," Commerce City police spokesman Chris Dickey told the Denver Post. The child suffered severe facial injuries, but was expected to survive. Police said the dog's owner is a transient who was present at the time of the attack.

It is at times like these, when he is pushed kicking and screaming into the crucible, that Obama’s callowness shows. For his supporters, that jejune, jocular air has been a plus for almost six years. For the rest of us, it has served as a liability and an irritation. Yesterday, it became a wholesale embarrassment. On the perpetual-campaign trail, the pattern is familiar. Trotting up to the podium, the president fist-bumps the audience’s stragglers and smiles a toothy and humble grin at those who catch his eye.
