Bowe Bergdahl retains Yale military

McAllen, TX -Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, freed after years of captivity in Afghanistan and returned to active duty this week, has retained an attorney — a military law expert from Yale. Eugene Fidell, who teaches military justice at Yale Law School, told the Los Angeles Times that he has been representing Bergdahl for about a week and is working pro bono. Fidell said he has received a variety of reactions to his decision to work with Bergdahl. "There are people who harbor ill will toward my client," Fidell said, but at the same time he has received emails "wishing my client

#2,the military does not pay for civilian defense attorneys. He can have a JAG Trial Defense Services attorney appointed to him for free.

Also I confirm that no SGT can afford an Ivy League lawyer on his own.

Well the atty said he was doing the work pro bono or out of his own pocket. I am glad he has outside counsel because it will be harder for anyone "inside" to push the end result -- and the Army lawyers will be salivating to get at the "expert."

PYONGYANG, North Korea - North Korea´s Supreme Court on Sunday sentenced Matthew Miller, a U.S. citizen, to six years of hard labor for entering the country illegally and trying to commit espionage. At a trial that lasted about 90 minutes, the court said Miller, 24, of Bakersfield, California, tore up his tourist visa at Pyongyang´s airport upon arrival on April 10 and admitted to having the "wild ambition" of experiencing prison life so that he could secretly investigate the North Korean human rights situation. Miller, who waived the right to a lawyer, was handcuffed and led from the courtroom after

Earlier this month, President Obama decided to throw in a good word for our NATO friends in the Baltics, in the event that Russia is tempted to try out its invasion shtick on another former Soviet satellite. “We’ll be here for Estonia,” he avowed from that nation’s capital. “We will be here for Latvia. We will be here for Lithuania. You lost your independence once before. With NATO, you will never lose it again.” Vladimir Putin lost no time in leaping over that red line by crossing the Estonian border and abducting a security official once Obama had hardly left

The New York Times is going after the Koch Brothers once again. No news there, of course. But it’s worth noting that the Times has found a new angle to pursue—or should we say, a new club with which to cudgel the Kochs—namely, the legal curlicues of campaign finance. Liberals, no doubt, will be cheering for the Times, but they ought to be careful, because two can play at this game. Conservatives have long decried the left’s drive to “criminalize” politics as a means to achieve ideological ends. KABUL, Afghanistan — To find a flag as big as the one hoisted over Kabul’s historic Wazir Akbar Khan hill on Wednesday, you would have to go pretty far — possibly as far as a Walmart parking lot somewhere in the Great Plains. Flying from a specially erected flagpole more than 200 feet high — taller than the Statue of Liberty replica in Las Vegas — the black, red and green flag, at 97 by 65 feet, is big enough to drape over a Dreadnoughtus dinosaur (tail included). It is hundreds of square yards bigger than any other known Afghan

WASHINGTON — Democrats have reversed the partisan imbalance on the federal appeals courts that long favored conservatives, a little-noticed shift with far-reaching consequences for the law and President Obama’s legacy. For the first time in more than a decade, judges appointed by Democratic presidents considerably outnumber judges appointed by Republican presidents. The Democrats’ advantage has only grown since late last year when they stripped Republicans of their ability to filibuster the president’s nominees. Democratic appointees who hear cases full time now hold a majority of seats on nine of the 13 United States Courts of Appeals. When Mr. Obama took

How do Islamic extremists fire up the troops? Poems about virgins, of course. During a investigation into home-grown terrorists, the FBI monitored communication between two Boston Muslims, Tarek Mehanna and Ahmad Abousamra. Mehanna would be charged with aiding al Qaeda and given 17 years in prison, Abousamra fled the US before arrest, and is now serving as chief propagandist for ISIS. Abousamra posts beheading videos to the Internet, and promotes them on social media. He’s one of the FBI’s most wanted. One of the messages between Mehanna and Abousamra was a 2008 poem written by

The fact is despite Burns´ laughable denials, he is a bitterly partisan Democrat to the extent that he gave a speech in 1998 in which he declared himself to be a "Yellow Dog Democrat." The Islamic State has released a video claiming to show the beheading of British captive David Haines. The father-of-two, an aid worker, was abducted by militants in Syria last year. He appeared at the end of a video showing the beheading of US journalist Steven Sotloff earlier this month. In the video, which has been posted on sites such as YouTube, the extremists also threaten to execute another Briton. Islamic State (IS) extremists had threatened to kill Mr Haines and have not responded to any of the family´s attempts to make contact so far, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) said.

President Obama in his ISIS speech did his best to convince the American people that things are under control, that he will pursue a coalition with other nations to degrade and ultimately destroy ISIS and that he will do it only through air strikes. This week, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) slandered a group of Middle Eastern Christians who were trying to raise awareness of their struggle to avoid a genocide in the Middle East. His cynical grandstanding was rightly condemned — but he was hardly alone. Cruz agreed to speak to this group, which included bishops of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, ostensibly out of solidarity, but took the occasion to antagonize them over their insufficient praise for Israel, then smeared them as anti-Semites before dropping the mic. The Washington Free Beacon publicized this flameout — their publisher said the room

Voter turnout during last month´s primary races was a little too good in some counties, Arizona elections officials said Friday. Some precincts in northern Arizona tallied more ballots cast than there are registered voters, the Arizona Capitol Times reported. According to officials, errors made by poll workers and elections officials in Apache and Navajo counties led to the miscalculations. Initial reports from some precincts showed a turnout of anywhere from 200 to 400 percent. In Apache County, the Puerco West precinct reportedly had 100 votes cast, but only 23 voters are registered there. The voter turnout added up to 434
