Murdoch Reportedly Offered $80 Billion
for Time Warner, Was Turned Down

Mediaite, by Evan McMurry

The rumors that Rupert Murdoch was interested in purchasing Time Warner gained some shape and form Wednesday morning, as the New York Times reported that sources said Murdoch made an $80 billion offer for the TV-cable-film-magazine conglomerate, only to be rebuffed. Fox approached Time Warner in June and offered to pay $85 a share on Time Warner stock; the combined company would be worth about $65 billion in revenue. Per the Times, Murdoch is especially interested in Time Warner’s broadcast rights to sport events like basketball and baseball games, to help grow Fox’s sports footprint. Murdoch’s offer would also have

The Time Warner stockholders have legal standing to sue the board of directors if a takeover bid was rejected.

If the court finds the board rejected a valid offer, the board would become personally liable for the cost to the shareholders of their lost stock value.

The offer, more specifically, is $80 billion, 80,000 FBI emails and the frothing of potential UK corporate charges.

Not as clean as the earlier posters state.

If true, the stockholders won´t be happy. I know I wouldn´t. Hope they skin the board members alive (legally speaking, of course).

During his speech last night, President Obama declared, “ISIL is not ‘Islamic.’ No religion condones the killing of innocents. And the vast majority of ISIL’s victims have been Muslim.” It is certainly true that the vast majority of the victims of ISIS, as the group is more commonly known, have been Muslim as have been the majority of victims of other radical Islamist movements, it is not the job of any president to decree what is and is not Islam; what is and is not Christianity; and what is and is not Judaism. For all practical purposes, religion is what

Judge: Pistorius did not

Pretoria, South Africa -- Oscar Pistorius cannot be found guilty of intentionally killing Reeva Steenkamp, the judge in his trial said Thursday. The judge has not issued a verdict, and the proceedings continue. Pistorius faces other possible verdicts, including culpable homicide. Under South African law, Pistorius will not be found guilty of murder. Evidence suggests that Pistorius genuinely believed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was still in the bedroom, and that the person in the bathroom was an intruder, although that is irrelevant to the case, Judge Thokozile Masipa said. Oscar Pistorius cries during the verdict in his murder trial in Pretoria, South Africa. Oscar

Initial reaction to President Obama´s speech on Wednesday night was, in large part, nonpartisan. But shortly after the speech, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and former Obama press secretary/newly minted CNN contributor Jay Carney used the occasion to work out some lingering tensions. The exchange on CNN included plenty of interrupting and accusations of false facts. We would encourage people to watch it.

WASHINGTON — Homeland Security officials warned Wednesday they don’t have a full picture of the Americans and Europeans heading to Syria to train with ISIS and therefore can’t stop them from coming into the US. “We don’t have a fulsome picture in all cases,” said Jennifer Lasley, a deputy undersecretary at the Department of Homeland Security. “It does concern us,” added Troy Miller, an acting assistant commissioner with US Customs and Border Protection. House Homeland Security Committee chairman Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) called the situation worrisome. “You don’t know what you don’t know. We only have estimates of how many Westerners … are in

Francis Taylor, under secretary for intelligence and analysis at DHS, told senators during a hearing that ISIL supporters are known to be plotting ways to infiltrate the United States through the border. “There have been Twitter, social media exchanges among ISIL adherents across the globe speaking about that as a possibility,”

Dan wrote up yesterday´s Washington Post/ABC News poll, which was jammed with crooked numbers for President Obama. Most striking was the (30/55) majority deeming Obama´s presidency "a failure," along with the prevailing opinion that he´s divided the country, and his unsightly leadership score. The survey also included a dreadful (38/56) presidential approval rating on the implementation of Obamacare; support for the law itself was also underwater, with an outright majority opposed, despite this polling series´ silly question wording that omits any mention of ´Obamacare´ or the ´Affordable Care Act.´ A new Kaiser Family Foundation poll produces similar findings, with support

Six U.S. army helicopters landed in a rapeseed field in northern Poland to ask for directions after veering off course on their way back from military exercises and alarming locals on guard over tensions across the border. Five Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters and one tandem-rotor Boeing Co. Chinook chopper touched down near the village of Gruta, 220 kilometers (140 miles) north of Warsaw at about noon yesterday, according to local eyewitnesses. Some residents were at first spooked at the sight of the aircraft, Halina Kowalkowska, the village’s head, said by phone.

It’s official, we’ve become the United Singles of America! Unmarried American adults outnumber their married counterparts for the first time since the federal government began tracking that data in 1976, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. There were 124.6 million single Americans in August, accounting for 50.2 percent of the 16-and-over US population, BLS data showed. That number has been hovering just below the 50-percent mark since 2013, before finally getting over the majority hurdle this summer. Back in 1976, the unmarried crowd accounted for 37.4 percent of the adult population and it’s been trending upward ever since. Unmarried

The increase was more than three times larger than experienced by hospitals in states that did not expand. The jump was also outside the range of normal year-to-year fluctuations. “When this newly insured population is

Advocates of UBI see it as a blunter, more effective means of reducing poverty and shrinking the inequality gap. But even if UBI proponents are right on the merits, Tyler Cowen argues that the politics of the issue are not favorable. Under
