The Search for a Progressive Reagan

What do a lesbian grandmother in Ontario, an extreme conservative professor of economics in Virginia, a right-wing politician in England who admires Putin and an Italian-American municipal politician from Brooklyn have in common? This isn’t the first line of a weak Borscht-Belt-style gag. It is a string of recent examples from both sides of the Atlantic of politicians who have understood that the post-2008 political environment is dramatically different from the era that preceded it. The leaders—on both left and right—who figure out how to take advantage of these altered circumstances will be the ones who win. Barack Obama was

I almost stopped reading at the first paragraph since she used "extreme" and "right-wing" for conservatives but no adjectives for her examples on the left.

David Brat is not "extreme" if you follow what he says. He´s just not a toady for Wall Street.

The rest of the article isn´t bad. It says the country wants smart government and certainly not more government.

Of course, it credits BH0 with foresight without mentioning the catastrophe of the last year of W (created by Nancy/Dingy/Soros). Now we know BH0 was just an empty suit which was packaged well and there was nothing there in terms of leadership or administrative talent.

Took the word out of my mouth #5. "Progressive" my foot. Regressive, repressive and oppressive, against individual liberty...they have it in Obama. Obama stands for what they stand for and it is not at all turning out the way their delusional minds think is should so they look to double down. Watch out for the witch Warren for they will shift their focus to their new "savior".

The author does a fairly good job of summarizing what happened between the end of WWII and Ronald Reagan´s election. Yet, she fails to see the connection between the steady expansion of the "progressive" agenda and the onset of "stagflation".

More Conservative denial. Like Obama, Ms Freeland is dismissed as stupid, a fantastist, etc. In the meantime, today, the "incompetent" President is dancing rings around the Republicans who control the House but complain they have no power - they can´t even make a deal for immigration reform championed by the US Chamber of Commerce.

What Freeland is saying is more correct than anyone would like to acknowledge. The Libs have no transformational figure like Ronald Reagan, but look at the "progress" made by "failure" Obama - "Affordable Care", open borders and resettlement of millions, a stranglehold on fossil fuels and their emissions, and on and on. Not that "Compassionate Conservatives" didn´t super-spend eight years trying the same themselves.

Freeland´s error is not understanding that regulation and the "public servants" employed by regulation and inspection provide an economic negative as earned money is made to flow to rapacious governments from local to federal, all trying new methods to rip off its citizens to support more of itself. The "secular economy" collapsed because the politicians overheated nearly every sector with incentives including tax breaks and nearly free money to avoid "recession". Had Bush survived a few more months, he´d have been a hero, too. Sixteen years of monetary and economic toomfoolery collapsed just a few months early.

Meanwhile the government goes deeper in debt to finance wars it will not win, and decades-long occupations it cannot end maintaining a military it holds in political check. Security is an endless mantra designed to create "heroes" and pick pockets for bigger and better ways of enslaving citizens too willing to surrender liberty for safety. Sovereignty a quaint nation since "The New World Order" increasingly asserted itself.

Although it can´t happen here, somehow we have the government we deserve...along with the 47% taking government cheese.

If you think Obama is a lightweight, check out Canada´s progressive wannabe, Justin Turdo. Now, thaaaat´s stupid done up correctly.

He personally chose Freeland as one of his premier nitwits and she left her [horizontal] position as a New York hangaround to be parachuted into a safe electoral seat in Toronto, that New York wannabe of the north.

Transfixed by the chaos engulfing swathes of the Middle East, it is no surprise that the West has not given Turkey’s first direct presidential election the attention it merits – and would have received in more peaceable times. This is a pity because the tectonic plates are shifting fast in the country, which is a crucial link between East and West, and the changes may be both permanent and troubling. After yesterday’s first round, in which he won more than 50 per cent of the vote, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the all-powerful Prime Minister since 2002, is almost certainly heading for several

American University Professor Hillary Mann Leverett told MSNBC´s Melissa Harris-Perry that there is no history of anti-Semitism in the Middle East, no "deep-seated animosity," at least when compared to 1940s Europe. In the segment, Harris-Perry seemed troubled over the idea that the conflict between Israel and Palestine is "ancient" and "visceral." If only she could grasp that this conflict is "relatively recent," then she would be more "optimistic" about the future. Luckily for Harris-Perry, Professor Leverett was there to guide her with this "well informed" commentary: If you look at Jewish communities in other places around the Middle East, there

The Obama administration will force out 550 Army majors in the coming weeks. Stars and Stripes reported: About 550 Army majors, including some serving in Afghanistan, will soon be told they have to leave the service by next spring as part of a budget-driven downsizing of the service. Gen. John Campbell, the vice chief of the Army, acknowledged Friday that telling troops in a war zone that they’re out of a job is a difficult task. But he said some of the soldiers could join the National Guard or the Army Reserve. The decision to cut Army majors comes on

The Typical Household,

Economic inequality in the United States has been receiving a lot of attention. But it’s not merely an issue of the rich getting richer. The typical American household has been getting poorer, too. The inflation-adjusted net worth for the typical household was $87,992 in 2003. Ten years later, it was only $56,335, or a 36 percent decline, according to a study financed by the Russell Sage Foundation. Those are the figures for a household at the median point in the wealth distribution — the level at which there are an equal number of households whose worth is higher and lower.

President Obama won´t make any major announcements on immigration reform during his secretive mid-vacation trip back to Washington next week, the White House said Wednesday. The president is expected to return to the White House on Sunday, but officials won´t say why Obama is taking the unusual, and costly, trip back to Washington. He´s expected to return to Martha´s Vineyard, where he´s been vacationing, on Tuesday. Speculation has circled around whether Obama might make an announcement of executive actions he´s taking on immigration reform, or a surprise visit from a foreign leader. But the White House is "not anticipating a major announcement on

They understand what a greenhouse is, how it works, why we call it the greenhouse effect. They get it.” “If you accept the science,” Kerry continued. “If you accept that the science is causing climate to change, you have to

FERGUSON, Mo. — The friend who was with Michael Brown when he was shot and killed by a police officer near St. Louis over the weekend is reportedly confirming that he and Brown had taken part in the theft of cigars from a convenience store that day. That word comes from the attorney for Dorian Johnson, speaking to MSNBC. Police in Ferguson had earlier announced that Brown was suspected of taking cigars from the convenience store in what was described as a "strong-arm robbery." Brown´s family is accusing police of trying to draw attention away from the shooting.

A Travis County grand jury today indicted Gov. Rick Perry on two charges related to his effort last year to force District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg to resign after her drunken driving arrest. Grand jurors charged Perry, 63, with abuse of official capacity, a first-degree felony, and coercion of a public official. The indictments stemmed from Perry’s threat last summer to withhold $7.2 million in state money from Lehmberg’s office unless she step down – a threat he later carried out by vetoing an appropriation in the state budget. The money was earmarked for the state’s Public Integrity Unit, which is housed in Lehmberg’s office. Perry’s veto forced

Instead of being handled as a military-to-military matter, each case is now subject to review—slowing the approval process and signaling to Israel that military assistance once taken for granted is now under closer scrutiny. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon this week joined Pope Francis, Egypt´s top cleric and several world leaders in condemning the terrorist group, which now calls itself Islamic State and has carved out a caliphate, or nation of strict Sharia law, in northern Iraq and Syria.
