Did the GOP Just Take a
Big Leap Forward in Data?

National Journal, by Alex Roarty

Imagine a volunteer for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Arkansas, trying to assist Rep. Tom Cotton in his race against Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor, knocks on a voter´s door in Little Rock and discovers the potential GOP supporter owns a gun. In the world of voter outreach, it´s a potentially crucial piece of information; with the right pitch from a group like the National Rifle Association, for instance, it could prove decisive in getting that voter to pull the lever for Cotton. Except, in years past, it´s also the kind of information that the two separate groups would never share

Imagine someone running for office who is not afraid to simply tell us what his most important concerns are and what he intends to do about them instead of trying to tickle our ears with what he thinks we want to hear.

White House Press Secretary Faces Reporter

The White House press secretary, Josh Earnest, faced a minor media revolt at his daily press briefing Monday after he criticized a Washington Post story for its reliance on anonymous sources. Several reporters at the briefing challenged Earnest´s critique by pointing out White House officials regularly insist information be anonymously attributed to members of the administration in conference calls and other communications. "You criticize anonymous sources but we have anonymous sources from you every day," one reporter said. "How can you criticize that when that´s what you basically give us every day, except for the briefing?" Earnest responded sarcastically. "Except

Data mining is digging into your health. Actuaries predict your life span. Banks track your spending habits. Now, your employer can tell whether you’ll have diabetes a year from now. And the federal government is encouraging businesses to use that information to tell you how to eat and exercise, to “data mine” for your own good and the employer’s bottom line. Medical records, social media, credit card records and new activity tracking gadgets like Fitbits are being used to assess your riskiness to yourself and to the cost-conscious health care system. Aetna is among the companies paving the way. It’s

The heartbroken father of a 17-year-old Dutch girl who died in the crash of Malaysia Airlines 17 has written an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, excoriating him "for murdering my dear and only child." Elsemiek de Borst was on her way to Malaysia on vacation with her mother, stepfather and little brother when the Boeing 777 was shot down Thursday, killing all on board, said her father, Hans de Borst. In an open letter posted on Facebook, de Borst blasted Putin and the leaders of the pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine, blaming them for his daughter´s death. "Thank you, Mr. Putin,

The Montana Supreme Court on Tuesday will publicly reprimand a judge who gave a lenient sentence to a rapist after suggesting the 14-year-old victim shared some of the responsibility for the crime. District Judge G. Todd Baugh of Billings is scheduled to appear before the court in Helena, where one of the justices will read a censure statement prepared in advance. Baugh will likely get an opportunity to address the court, and the censure will then go into the record, state Supreme Court clerk Ed Smith said Monday. The censure is a public declaration by the high court that a judge is

Israeli Media Say Israeli

JERUSALEM -- Israeli media say an Israeli soldier is missing following a deadly battle in the Gaza Strip. A defense official confirmed that there is a soldier missing. The official spoke on Tuesday on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the incident with media. The media reported that the soldier was traveling in an armored personal carrier that had come under attack over the weekend. The reports did not say if the soldier was dead or alive. Hamas earlier this week claimed it had captured an Israeli soldier. Israelis did not deny or confirm the claim. For Israelis, a captured

“Why do you think President Obama´s job rating is falling, even though the economy is recovering?” the interviewer asked. It´s a fair question, even though the economy declined 2.9 percent in the first quarter, even though most jobs created in June were part-time, even though labor force participation remains low. The fact is that the economy is growing, however slowly, jobs are being created and the unemployment rate is heading down toward what economists consider full employment. And still the president´s job rating languishes. What´s wrong with the question is an assumption embedded within it, that what voters seek most

The U.N. agency that runs schools and hospitals in Gaza is supposed to be neutral. But it gave 20 rockets found in one of its buildings to cops who many believe report to Hamas. When 20 rockets were discovered last week in a U.N.-funded school in Gaza, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees was quick to condemn the storage of weapons of war in a building meant to educate children. But rather than turn them over to a third party, or arrange for their disposal, the agency, known as UNRWA, handed them over to the local police force,

The tragic fate of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, believed shot down by a missile in eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 on board, has cast a new light on the series of gambles Russian President Vladimir Putin embarked on in late February. At that time, Putin sent military intelligence troops in unmarked uniforms to take control of the southern Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea. Three weeks later, Russia annexed the region. As Russian-speaking Ukrainians farther north in Donetsk and Luhansk stormed administrative buildings, demanding independence from Kiev, Russian intelligence officers started slipping across the border to help organize the militias. In subsequent months, Moscow

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip -- The death toll among Palestinians from the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip reached 508 on Monday, Gaza health officials said as the two sides counted their dead following the bloodiest day of fighting so far in the two-week campaign. Diplomatic efforts to broker a cease-fire intensified amid the mounting carnage. In New York, the U.N. Security Council expressed "serious concern" about Gaza´s rising civilian death toll and demanded an immediate end to the fighting following an emergency session. Convinced that their region has suffered as much Obama administration meddling as it can possibly stand, Israel and Egypt took the extraordinary step earlier this week of jointly rejecting requests by US Secretary of State John Kerry to involve himself in ceasefire talks with the terrorist group Hamas. Israeli and Egyptian diplomats both claim Egyptian efforts to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas collapsed as a direct result of Secretary Kerry’s announcement he was prepared to join the talks. He apparently made the announcement without first consulting either of the parties. The diplomats are convinced that their own

A pernicious, little-known Obama administration policy – one that that incentivizes adult illegal immigrants to use children as human shields to escape arrest and deportation at the border – largely has escaped the media’s notice. This same policy is driving the historic surge of children at the border, as everyone from coyotes to illegal immigrant adults already in America seeks to use children to guarantee their safe passage into the country, or to protect them from deportation if they are illegally living here. The flood of illegal immigrant children, piling up like human debris on the US border, won’t stop

In speaking about the shoot down of Malaysian airliner MH 17 earlier that day, Cooper referred back to “July 17, 1996, when TWA Flight 800 was shot down off the coast of Long Island in New York.” (snip)wo days earlier, Cooper hosted a CNN special report on the subject, “Witnessed: The Crash of TWA Flight 800.” To understand the depth of media-government complicity, it is useful to compare “Witnessed” with two prior videos. Do something about the depraved crowd of terrorists who provoked Israel into assaulting the tunnels in which they skulk? At around noon on March 20 last year, Air Force One landed at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport for Barack Obama’s first presidential visit to Israel. The three-day trip had been billed as an Israeli reset—the newly reelected president’s bid for a clean slate with the Jewish state after four years of icy relations. Obama would lay a wreath at the tomb of Theodor Herzl, the father of Zionism. He would visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum. He would address an auditorium packed with Israeli students. And, of course, he would meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Before heading
