The Siege of Baghdad
PJ Media, by Richard Fernandez

Original Article

Bill Roggio has a very interesting article describing the ISIS plan to invest Baghdad. (Snip) As everyone now knows the campaign against US forces back in 2006 failed. The attackers were counter-encircled by US-led forces who established intelligence assets of their own to find and destroy the enemy. Much effort was put into tracking back weapons smuggling routes back to their sources, including explosively formed penetration IEDs whose cores were manufactured in Iran. US conventional units provided the “top cover” for the intel guys who went out to look for the enemy. Now ISIS is playing the same number on

Comments:
Hibhib, the town in which al-Zarqawi, his religious advisor, and his concubine were force fed two 250-pounders, is about thirty miles northeast of Baghdad. There´ve been reports that ISIL warriors--so far numbering about 10,000--are massing in western Iraq. That´s the dumbest thing they could do if the Iraqis have any ordnance to drop on their heads. (They do.) It´ll take a bloody while, but ISIL can be put down.

Maybe Obama should fly into Baghdad and see if al-maliki can arrange a dinner party.

Taking out al-zarqawi was far more important than bin laden, but it´s all lost now. ISIL is in control of almost all the supply routes. Goods travel overland in Iraq. When they want they´ll use terror and siege tactics to overrun the city. Only Iran can stop them and then Iraq erupts into a holy war.

"Maliki will have to reinvent the wheel, with this difference: his forces are far less competent than the US units which preceded him. More firepower may be provided to the Iraqi government, but key factors of combat leadership and institutional knowledge have been dispersed and lost, perhaps for the duration."

Conditions have changed, and ISIS knows it. The success of the counteroffensive when the US was at full strength was an exception to past results - an aberration. Now that the US advantage has been removed, it may well be time for them to try again and reasonably expect a different result.

All that was accomplished by the vast expenditure of US blood and treasure is about to be undone. With all the manufactured crises now confronting the nation, there is no longer the political will to do anything about it.

Will there be any way to compensate the fallen and their families who sacrificed everything - for nothing?

The after dinner entertainment at one Shi’ite leader’s home, according to Jacob Siegel of the Daily Beast, consisted a torture video taken by one of the new members of his militia, the so-called “Peace Brigades”. (Snip) During Operation Iraqi Freedom the coalition forces would routinely come across “slaughterhouses” and torture chambers. Terrorism doesn’t win by defeating armies. It triumphs primarily by controlling populations through fear and coercion. It’s a cheap method of control. The Chinese have a saying: “strike the mountain to shock the tiger” and “kill the chicken to scare the monkey.” Both sayings can be summarized as follows:

We’re coming up shortly on the 40th anniversary of Richard Nixon’s resignation, which coincides with the publication of Rick Perlstein’s new doorstop, The Invisible Bridge: The Fall of Nixon and the Rise of Reagan, about which more—much more—in due course. (Snip) You can read my entire chapter about this, or you can take in this 22-minute segment of The American Mind with Professor John Marini of the University of Nevada at Reno, which nails it. Nixon had a serious plan in his second term to tame Congress and the bureaucracy. So he had to be stopped by any means necessary.

AKRON, Ohio -- Sergio Garcia doesn´t know anything about being in a zone. He had no trouble identifying the best round of his career. Garcia one-putted the final 11 holes and made birdies on his last seven holes Friday in the Bridgestone Invitational to tie the course record at Firestone with a 9-under 61 and take a three-shot lead into the weekend. He had a birdie putt on every hole on the back nine, missing only a 15-footer from the fringe at No. 11. Garcia shot 27 on the back nine, a course record. "Just one of those moments that

Now that everyone’s favorite Republican-turned-independent-turned-Democrat has announced he is prepared to go Total Obama from Day 1 if he’s restored to the governor’s mansion, voters can’t be blamed for wondering whether Charlie Crist really wants the job. In his never-ending quest to win the far-left Nobel Peace Prize, John Kerry has deliberately put the security of the state of Israel at greater risk. Sadly, and quite dangerously, this is nothing new for Kerry. In January of this year, Israeli Minister of Defense Moshe Yaalon, recognizing Mr. Kerry’s self-serving endgame, said: “American Secretary of State John Kerry, who turned up here determined and acting out of misplaced obsession and messianic fervor, cannot teach me anything about the conflict with the Palestinians … the only thing that can ‘save us’ is for John Kerry to win a Noble Prize

Last winter alone, the league added three new rules and amended six others—and that doesn´t even count the two rules it has amended since this season began. But for all its love of new legislation, MLB has shown little inclination to delete rules that have long ceased being relevant. As a result, the rule book has become baseball´s version of the tax code, dotted with obscurities and oddities whose existence are unknown even to many players and managers. That seems like an awfully strong word, but it is the term that distinguished law professor Glenn Reynolds, no hysteric, uses to describe the Obama administration’s oft-reported plan to issue executive amnesty to five or six million illegal immigrants in violation of federal law. Glenn’s characterization is a fair one. When a tyrant asserts the right to rule by decree in a state that has formerly been subject to the rule of law, he is commonly described as carrying out a coup d’etat. That is just what the Obama administration has done, and reportedly will continue to do. When Obama changed

ATLANTA — In the early 2000s, a young researcher at the Centers for Disease Control named Greg Millett set out to solve an epidemiological mystery. Nobody could explain why black Americans, particularly black gay men, had such high rates of HIV infection compared to the rest of the population. How were they putting themselves in so much danger? What were they doing differently from everyone else? Millett began with a survey of the published research, but that only seemed to raise more questions. Study after study seemed to arrive at the same conclusion: Black gay men take fewer risks in the

President Obama returned from his full-time job as the Democratic Party’s fundraiser-in-chief to host today’s U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit. According to Mr. Obama, there really haven’t been that many problems, but those we may be experiencing are the fault not of his policies or leadership, but of the fact that he continues to have to contend

The obsession by the Obama-Kerry administration with imposing a cease-fire on the warring parties in the Hamas-Israel war will go down in history as one of the most strategic mistakes in military history. Here is a fact the administration deliberately and maliciously ignored: In the history of modern warfare, no terrorist group has ever honored a cease-fire. Hamas has broken every cease-fire it ever said it would honor. Every single one. Even the Israel-Hamas 2012 cease fire, brokered by then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, was simply agreed to by Hamas to give it an opportunity to restock its military arsenal, pressure Israel

Obamacare plans have shrunk payments to physicians so much that some doctors say they won’t be able to afford to accept Obamacare coverage, NPR reports. Many of the eight million sign-ups in Obamacare exchanges nationwide already face more limited choices for physicians and hospitals than those in the private insurance market. But with low physician reimbursement rates, the problem could get even worse. For a typical quick patient visit, Dr. Doug Gerard, a Connecticut internist, told NPR a private insurer would pay $100 while Medicare would pay around $80. But Obamacare plans are more likely to pay closer to $80, which Gerard
