Almonds Are Sucking
the Life Out of California

Atlantic Wire, by Shirley Li

The new California gold rush is a bit, well, nutty: According to USDA predictions reported Monday, farmers will harvest a record 2.1 billion pounds of almonds this year. That´s great news for almond-lovers, but not-so-great news for California, which produces 80 percent of the world´s almonds. A single almond requires 1.1 gallons of water to produce, and seeing as the state is currently in the middle of a devastating drought, that´s water farmers have to drill deep for – 2,500 feet deep, in fact. So why keep almond groves around? Because the U.S. and Asia´s demand for the nuts is skyrocketing. Between

Oh, this is such garbage. The water distribution regs have changed so most of the water runs out to the sea so the fish ´use´ it.

Truth be told, diverting water out to sea so that the Delta Smelt, a non-indigenous bait fish, can be protected from the irrigation pumps is the real culprit. Taking the Smelt off of the politically motivated endangered species list will go a long way to ending this politically created drought!!!

We know better. We know what is "sucking the life out of California" and it isn´t the almond farming.

If the liberals had their way there´d be no agriculture in California because it needs water.

The next thing we´ll find out is that the almond growers are largely Republicans. Want to bet?

Democrats have two indisputable, unmatched areas of expertise. Concocting and fooling the voters with faux or laughably inflated issues, sidestepping true real issues. And, secondly, the Dems´ talent for wrecking the once Golden State as well as knocking the stuffing out of the once hope of the world, the United States of America.
Almond water usage is a faux issue indeed when the lowly smelt incredibly thrives preemptively.

"a single almond requires 1.1 gallons of water to produce"

Yuba and Butte Counties are full of almond orchards. I never saw an irrigation system capable of transporting that kind of water to them. Almonds aren´t picked by the way. There´s a machine that grabs the trunk like you would a teenage dullard, and shakes the almonds off the tree into nets.

By the way, that 1.1 gallons story sounds like an Al Gore factoid.

#8 There are several reasons for why they´re so expensive. First is the fact that the demand has increased, so although the crops are bigger, the demand is bigger still. A lot of it has to do with the cost of all of the regulations California farmers and packers have to abide by, and the cost of water has tripled in the last few years. We are also having a problem with trailers full of almonds being stolen off of the farms, so they now have to pay for security.

It´s not cheap being a farmer in California and it´s a myth that they´re getting wealthy off of "free water." It´s not free! They pay water bills just like the rest of us.

While enlistment rates in the U.S. military vary by group, they also vary by state. Enlistment ranges from less than 3 per thousand in North Dakota to more than 7 per thousand in Florida and Maine. According to the Defense Department, differences exist at the regional level as well. In 2013, 44% of all military recruits came from the South, despite it having only 36% of the country’s 18-24 year-old civilian population. By contrast, the Northeast was the most underrepresented region of the country; only 14% of new enlistments came from this area, compared to 18% of its 18-24 year-old population.

Shortly after the Sunni militant group the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) retook control of Raqqa earlier this year, it created the al-Khansaa´ Brigade, an all-female unit operating in the city. Since Tikrit fell to ISIS forces in early June, recapturing the city—Saddam Hussein’s hometown—has been a centerpiece of the Iraqi Army’s campaign. But despite Baghdad’s efforts, pouring soldiers and resources into the battle there, the fighting has dragged on for weeks with only fleeting gains. Nearly a year before President Obama declared a humanitarian crisis on the border, a team of experts arrived at the Fort Brown patrol station in Brownsville, Tex., and discovered a makeshift transportation depot for a deluge of foreign children. Thirty Border Patrol agents were assigned in August 2013 to drive the children to off-site showers, wash their clothes and make them sandwiches. As soon as those children were placed in temporary shelters, more arrived. An average of 66 were apprehended each day on the border and more than 24,000 cycled through Texas patrol stations in 2013. Whether the Scots vote yes or no to independence on Sept. 18, their sense of what is possible for this small nation will have been transformed. Reporting on Scottish politics through wind and rain for almost 40 years, I have covered three referendums on self-government. The first, in 1979, offered a modest elected assembly: A slim majority of voters approved it, but the turnout fell short of the threshold required for the proposal to become law.
