Iran: Inside the off-limits
US Embassy in Tehran

Telegraph [UK], by Benedict Brogan

The grainy images of blindfolded hostages being led out of its imposing doors by a mob of baying Islamic revolutionaries are among the most enduring of the 20th century. Thirty-five years later, the former American embassy in Tehran looks more like a sleepy university campus than the “nest of spies” of Iranian propaganda, or the training school for militants it has since become. Behind its walls, though, lies the black museum of Iran’s revolution. [Snip] As I wandered down the corridors and gazed at the antiquated Seventies Telex machines, primitive computers and typewriters that served the doomed effort to prop

Comments:
I had no idea the Iranians had kept the building. Or if I did, I forgot. Either way, it´s a travesty. The accompanying photo shows two women who are, apparently, marking the date of the embassy takeover in 1979. (Not to mention its makeover into a spy and militant training school.)

Maybe Mossad might blow it up for us when they have a bit of spare time. /s

ISLAMABAD--Tens of thousands of protesters rallied Saturday in Pakistan´s capital, defying the pouring rain to demand the prime minister step down in the biggest challenge yet to the country´s government. Imran Khan, a famous cricketer who now leads the country´s third-biggest political bloc, and a fiery anti-government cleric called for the rallies in Islamabad, focused on making Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif leave office and holding new elections. Sharif, who took office just a year ago in the first democratic transfer of power in a country long plagued by military coups, has said he´ll stay in power, raising fears of possible

Senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan stated that the terms proposed in negotiations in Egypt thus far have been inadequate, reported Israel Radio on Saturday, and that the Palestinian people are ready for a "long war of attrition." [Snip] The official added that Islamic Jihad would continue to support Egyptian efforts to establish a permanent ceasefire. In Cairo, Israel Radio quoted Palestinian delegation member Basam al-Salhi as saying that on-going negotiations have a 50% chance of succeeding. He did mention that the Palestinians were willing to delay negotiations over a sea port and airport in the Gaza Strip.

United States Secret Service is investigating a photograph blasted out on Twitter which seems to show someone holding up a smartphone, displaying a picture of the ISIS flag, in front of the White House. The photo appears to have been taken at night on the pedestrian mall occupying what used to be part of Pennsylvania Avenue. The White House´s north portico can be seen in the background. It was first tweeted on August 9 by an account that was later deleted. ´[W]e are here #America near our #target :) sooooooooooooon,´ read the message that accompanied it. Arab countries are foundering, as a jihadi Islamic caliphate is strengthening its hold in the heart of the Middle East. The West seems intent on venting its frustrations on Israel, which is defending itself against Hamas, another radical Islamist group; Egypt is also feeling the brunt of it. Yet only a few years ago, Cairo was leading the charge of pragmatic Arab states backed by the US, fighting extremist Shi’ites under Iranian leadership. [Snip] The fact is that today the US has no ally in the Middle East, having deserted or offended every Arab country in the region. Yet had

Israel’s Foreign Ministry welcomed on Friday the call by the European Union (EU) for terrorist groups in Gaza to disarm. The EU’s call came in a statement in which the bloc offered to take charge of Gaza´s border crossings and work to prevent illegal arms flows. “Israel, like the foreign ministers of the European Union in their statement tonight, places great importance on the Egyptian initiative to achieve a long and steady calm,” said the Foreign Ministry’s statement. “Israel welcomes the ministers’ repeated calls for the terrorist organizations in Gaza to disarm. The European Union (EU) on Friday offered to take charge of Gaza´s border crossings and work to prevent illegal arms flows, according to The Associated Press (AP). The EU is prepared "to play a strong role" in managing the crossings while assuring that Israel´s security is guaranteed, said the 28-nation bloc´s foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton. The EU offered to reactivate and extend its monitoring of the Rafiah crossing with Egypt and other border posts, provided there will be a UN Security Council mandate for the mission and a sustainable cease-fire in place, according to AP.

Police today named Darren Wilson as the officer who fatally shot Michael Brown and released video stills and an incident report on a robbery shortly before the shooting that named the teenager as the ‘primary suspect’. In a shocking twist to the killing which sparked riots in St Louis over the last few days, the officer investigating the convenience store robbery also attended the scene of the shooting and said the suspect and Brown were the same person. According to the police report, video shows Brown and his friend Dorian Johnson having an altercation with store staff and allegedly stealing box of Swisher Sweets,

Mark Steyn has published his latest brief in his protracted court case with discredited climate scientist Michael Mann (who is suing him for libel) and it´s a corker. Here´s a sample: The audacity of the falsehoods in Mann's court pleadings is breathtaking. For example, on page 19 of his brief below dated January 18, 2013, he cites the international panel chaired by the eminent scientist Lord Oxburgh, FRS as one of the bodies that "exonerated" him, whereas on page 235 of Mann's own book, The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars, he states explicitly that "our own work did not fall within the remit of the committee and the hockey stick

Terror group Boko Haram are feared to have abducted almost 100 boys and men in a raid on a village in Nigeria, just months after the militants captured more than 200 schoolgirls. Witnesses said fighters loaded their captives onto trucks before driving away from the remote area in the northeast of the west African country. The bloodthirsty extremists, who aim to reinstate a medieval Islamic caliphate in religiously mixed Nigeria, are likely to have kidnapped the boys in order to force them to fight. Philip Hammond described militant group Islamic State (IS), which is fighting the Kurds and has seized large parts of northern Iraq, as a "terrible threat". It is understood the UK has not been formally asked for direct help. The issue is the subject of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels and the government´s emergency committee. According to Mr. Scarborough This is a president that does go out of his way to show that he’s not paying attention to what anybody says. He’s going to do exactly what he wants to do, and he’s going to be stubborn about it. He is politically, he is either politically tone deaf or he just doesn’t give a damn.

The president is expected to return to the White House on Sunday, but officials won´t say why Obama is taking the unusual, and costly, trip back to Washington. He´s expected to return to Martha´s Vineyard, where he´s been vacationing, on Tuesday. Speculation has circled around whether Obama might make an announcement of executive actions he´s taking on immigration reform, or a surprise visit from a foreign leader. Brown´s family is accusing police of trying to draw attention away from the shooting.

A Travis County grand jury today indicted Gov. Rick Perry on two charges related to his effort last year to force District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg to resign after her drunken driving arrest. Grand jurors charged Perry, 63, with abuse of official capacity, a first-degree felony, and coercion of a public official. The indictments stemmed from Perry’s threat last summer to withhold $7.2 million in state money from Lehmberg’s office unless she step down – a threat he later carried out by vetoing an appropriation in the state budget. The money was earmarked for the state’s Public Integrity Unit, which is housed in Lehmberg’s office. Perry’s veto forced

I almost can’t articulate my political affiliation in public (or on the radio) without immediately offering an apology and an explanation. How did I get here? I’ve been asking myself that question a lot lately. The more I ask it, the more I come to the realization that I haven’t changed all that much. Sure, I’m a little older … OK, a lot older. I

This is ridiculous. AUSTIN (KXAN) – A grand jury has handed up an indictment against Gov. Rick Perry in connection with the investigation into an effort to force Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg to resign. Perry wanted Lehmberg to resign because she had been busted for drunk driving. It’s not good to have a drunk driver, captured on camera abusing the officers who arrested her, heading up the Public Integrity Unit. At the center of the issue is a complaint about intimidation stemming from Perry’s threat to veto of $7.5 million in state funding to the Public Integrity Unit

A grand jury in Travis County, Texas, indicted Governor Rick Perry today. Why? For exercising his constitutional prerogative by threatening to veto, and then vetoing, an appropriation to support the public corruption unit in Travis County’s district attorney’s office. This followed the arrest of the county’s district attorney, Democratic Party activist Rosemary Lehmberg, for drunk driving, after she was found “with an open bottle of vodka in the front passenger seat of her car in a church parking lot in Austin.” Ms. Lehmberg served 45 days in jail. The Travis County district attorney’s office has long been a cesspool of corruption.

Instead of being handled as a military-to-military matter, each case is now subject to review—slowing the approval process and signaling to Israel that military assistance once taken for granted is now under closer scrutiny. The scandal that erupted Friday night involved millions of dollars, statehouse power plays—oh yeah, and alcohol, police, and masks. Texas Governor Rick Perry was indicted Friday on charges of abuse of power—a first degree felony—and coercion—a third degree felony. The charges stem from a 2013 scandal that has been quietly rumbling in the Lone Star State as Perry has been floated as a viable contender for the Republican nomination in 2016. This is a complex case, which might be why it has not made national headlines the way other recent, state-level scandals (like Bridgegate, in New Jersey) have. Below, I have outlined
