Iran: Inside the off-limits
US Embassy in Tehran

Telegraph [UK], by Benedict Brogan

The grainy images of blindfolded hostages being led out of its imposing doors by a mob of baying Islamic revolutionaries are among the most enduring of the 20th century. Thirty-five years later, the former American embassy in Tehran looks more like a sleepy university campus than the “nest of spies” of Iranian propaganda, or the training school for militants it has since become. Behind its walls, though, lies the black museum of Iran’s revolution. [Snip] As I wandered down the corridors and gazed at the antiquated Seventies Telex machines, primitive computers and typewriters that served the doomed effort to prop

Comments:
I had no idea the Iranians had kept the building. Or if I did, I forgot. Either way, it´s a travesty. The accompanying photo shows two women who are, apparently, marking the date of the embassy takeover in 1979. (Not to mention its makeover into a spy and militant training school.)

Maybe Mossad might blow it up for us when they have a bit of spare time. /s

Tomorrow, President Obama will issue a keynote address to layout his strategy for defeating Isil. Here’s my take on what he should say: "Good evening. Tonight, I want to talk to you about the threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, also known as Isil, Isis, and the Islamic State. In recent months, in the form of crucified civilians, in the rubble of destroyed churches and mosques, and in the specter of roving death squads, the world has witnessed the face of Isil. Hijackers of Islam, these terrorists claim to serve noble justice. Nothing could be further from

Forget Scottish nationalism. This isn´t about historic national identity anymore (if it ever was): it´s about historic Labour ideology. [Snip] It will not require separate statehood to "protect" the Scottish health system from being denationalised by Whitehall, because Whitehall has no such power. The "Save Our NHS" slogan has nothing to do with Scottish independence. It is a trade union mantra. What the "Yes" project is really about now is creating Public Sector Union Heaven north of the border: a socialist utopian fantasy which has not been broached as an electoral possibility since the Eighties when Labour boroughs declared themselves

The Ministry of Defense together with the US Missile Defense Agency test fired an Arrow 2 interceptor in central Israel on Tuesday morning. The trial was aimed at examining the capabilities of the latest version of the air defense system against future threats. The test was overseen by officials from the HOMA administration--a part of the Defense Ministry´s Administration for the Development of Weapons and Technological Infrastructure, and Israel Aerospace Industries, which is the project´s prime contractor. "An Arrow 2 interceptor was fired according to plan, and carried out planned fight stages," the Ministry of Defense said. "The large amounts

US-based NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Tuesday accused Israel of "illegally" sending almost 7,000 illegal immigrants back to their home countries in Africa. [Snip] HRW, whose head Kenneth Roth directly condoned Hamas war crimes last month, accused Israeli authorities of having "denied them access to fair and efficient asylum procedures, and used the resulting insecure legal status as a pretext to unlawfully detain or threaten to detain them indefinitely, coercing thousands into leaving." The accusations come despite the fact that Yochi Genison, the most senior official at the State Attorney´s office tasked with immigration, clarified in June that the

Syrian rebels strengthened their hold of the Syrian side of the Golan Heights on Tuesday morning, conquering the mountain Al-Mal in the Quneitra region where they have recently been capturing control from Syrian President Bashar Assad´s forces. In conquering the strategic point on Tuesday, rebel forces killed roughly ten Syrian soldiers according to Arab news sources cited by Walla!, with some reports assessing that all of Assad´s forces in the area were killed in the clash. The victory gives the rebels full control over the mountain located roughly ten kilometers (just over six miles) from the border with Israel.

The United States should be nervous

Next week’s referendum on Scottish independence has largely flown under the radar screen here in the United States. [Snip] They should be concerned, however. What happens in Scotland will reverberate on this side of the Atlantic, and not for the better. Here are five reasons why Americans should be nervous about the outcome of next week’s vote if Scotland votes for independence. 1. The Special Relationship will be undercut. The United Kingdom is far and away America’s biggest and most important ally. Anything that weakens Britain, and chips away at the Special Relationship, is a big negative for the United

"Ninety-seven percent of scientists agree: #climate change is real, man-made and dangerous." [Snip] The "97 percent" claim is an utter nonsense. This report released today by the Global Warming Policy Foundation explains exactly why. First, that word "dangerous". This is a concept that was never mentioned in the study responsible for that 97 percent claim. The paper was written by an Australian warmist activist called John Cook (and others). It drew its conclusions having allegedly reviewed 12,000 papers on climate change and found--so it claimed--that the vast majority of them supported the "consensus" on global warming. We cannot tell if yesterday’s announcement from Kensington Palace will make a jot of difference to the voting intentions of the Scottish people next week. But it must surely have lifted spirits at Balmoral after a difficult weekend in which the Queen has found herself dragged into an independence debate which she had been studiously avoiding. Precisely one year from now, the cameras will be circling Balmoral for an even greater royal milestone than the arrival of a baby. For it is on September 9, 2015, that Queen Elizabeth II will smash Queen Victoria’s record to become the longest-reigning monarch

Saudi Arabia has launched the construction of a high-security five-layered fence on the border with Iraq to protect the desert kingdom from “infiltrators and smugglers,” according to state media quoted by RT. The fence will cover 900 km (560 miles) of Saudi Arabia’s northern frontier, SPA state news agency reported. Watchtowers, night vision and radars will provide surveillance along the fence. The project was unveiled by King Abdullah late Friday. It was announced the fence’s purpose was to cut the "number of infiltrators, drug, arms and cattle smugglers to zero." Saudi Arabia already deployed some 30,000 troops to its border

The Obama administration will make a decision on executive action to prevent corporations from leaving the country in the "very near future," Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said Monday morning. Speaking at an event on business taxes at the Urban Institute in Washington, Lew placed the responsibility on Congress to address so-called tax inversions, but said that the administration was prepared to step in if lawmakers don´t move quickly enough. Inversions are tax maneuvers in which corporations buy firms in low-tax countries in order to place their headquarters in that country. Such deals have grown in number in recent months, with
