Hillary Clinton Crosses the Bridge
Vanity Fair, by Craig Brown*

Original Article

Bridges and tunnels, tunnels and bridges. For the future of our world, we must learn to recognize the difference between the two. I spent a lot of time over the years, both as First Lady and U.S. secretary of state, thinking about ways to understand those differences. I hold firm to my opinion that tunnels are, by and large, designed for traveling beneath things. Bridges, by contrast, are designed for traveling above things. And, like many Americans, I still hold strong to that great belief. With tunnels and bridges, it’s not that the more you have of one the less

As Sanctions Pile Up, Russians’

New York Times, by Neil MacFarquhar    Original Article

MOSCOW — Russia, facing the toughest round of Western sanctions imposed since the Ukraine crisis erupted, has adopted a nonchalant public stance, with President Vladimir V. Putin emphasizing the importance of self-reliance and a new poll released Tuesday indicating a “What, me worry?” attitude among the bulk of the population. But beneath that calm facade, there is growing alarm in Russia that the festering turmoil in Ukraine and the new round of far more punitive sanctions — announced Tuesday by both European nations and the United States — will have an impact on Russia’s relations with the West for years to

In July, Wendy Davis went on a seven-city campaign tour to call attention to Greg Abbott’s “decision to keep explosive chemical locations secret from parents.” In case you weren’t following along, Abbott decided in May to block public access to information about hazardous chemicals stored at certain facilities, including fertilizer plants like the one that exploded in West last year. Quizzed by reporters later, Abbott said citizens need only “drive around” their neighborhoods and ask companies for the information. It was a hilarious and stupid thing to say. From the Jerusalem Post: Christopher Gunness, spokesman for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, did not name who was responsible for putting weapons in the school, but quickly criticized whoever was at fault. “We condemn the group or groups who endangered civilians by placing these munitions in our school. MEXICO CITY–Jerry Brown, California’s Democratic governor, waded into the highly partisan immigration debate, telling reporters in Mexico’s capital Tuesday evening that “whatever can be done by a mere governor” to shelter unaccompanied child immigrants, “will be done.” Mr. Brown’s pledge came after convening a meeting on the issue in Mexico City with Catholic bishops from Los Angeles, Mexico and Guatemala. Diplomats from Mexico and Guatemala also joined Mr. Brown, as did a religious leader from El Salvador. “Certainly I’d do everything I could to make sure California will do its part to shelter any young children that are in need of protection,”

Of course, plagiarists — like shoplifters — are always with us, pinching small and large chunks of stuff that doesn’t belong to them. So I don’t think this week’s news necessarily means that a new plague of plagiarism has descended upon us, only that the law of averages decided to harvest three perpetrators at

One of the most underappreciated attributes in politics is a candidate´s authenticity. In an era when politicians´ talking points are scripted, and they worry about a gaffe going viral, the candidate who comes across as genuine holds a real advantage. It´s one reason why Barack Obama was able to defeat Hillary Clinton, why Mitt Romney struggled to capitalize on a favorable environment in 2012, and why someone like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is able to use his force of personality to overcome ideological differences with both Democrats and conservatives. And the authenticity factor has played a critical role in this

Nero fiddled while Rome burned. On Saturday, President Obama played golf while his foreign policy, and that of the nation he leads, was going up in smoke. Literally. Saturday was the day the State Department ordered the evacuation of the U.S. Embassy in Libya. Only three years ago, Obama helped NATO allies overthrow Moammar Kadafi as part of his “lead from behind” doctrine, but he has done little to help the resulting democratic government secure its authority. Not only did the U.S. not support sending international peacekeepers, it didn´t mount a serious program to train a new Libyan army. The

One of the ongoing debates about policy formation in Washington which has become far more prominent since the passage of Obamacare is the role of the Congressional Budget Office, and the weight given its estimates and predictions for the ramifications of legislation. CBO has always been at the center of a debate about how much we should trust these estimates and how much legislators should rely on them in crafting policy. The larger the legislation, the more moving parts it has, the more difficult it is to calculate the fiscal and economy-wide impacts. In the case of Obamacare, the sheer largeness
