Costa Concordia: refloating phase
of salvage operation begins

Telegraph [UK], by Nick Squires

An operation to refloat the Costa Concordia, which has been lying off the Italian island of Giglio for more than two-and-a-half years, has begun. The operation got under way at 0600 local time, salvage experts said, with the refloating of the giant cruise ship expected to take several days. “The Concordia refloating operations have started regularly,” the authorities said. The refloat is being led by Nick Sloane, a South African salvage expert who was also in charge of hauling the vessel upright in a complex operation last September. “At 6 am the Senior Salvage Master, Nick Sloane, reached the Remote

Jeeze, it took less time and money to build the ship in the first place.

The European protest groups have gathered like hyenas to whine about moving the ship to Genoa for dismantling. That group is almost at busy as the racial unrest cabal. Never miss a chance to get media ink.

All because they allowed an adolescent Lothario to be in charge of the ship.

But then again - - most Italian males are adolescent Lotharios.

All the illnesses/diseases that have happened on cruise ships plus the irresponsible attitude of the Concordia´s captain make us think twice about trusting our lives to any cruise ship company.

Hurdles for ObamaCare

Potential complications await consumers as President Barack Obama´s health care law approaches its second open enrollment season, just two months away. Don´t expect a repeat of last year´s website meltdown, but the new sign-up period could expose underlying problems with the law itself that are less easily fixed than a computer system. Getting those who signed up this year enrolled again for 2015 won´t be as easy as it might seem. And the law´s interaction between insurance and taxes looks like a sure-fire formula for confusion. For example: -- For the roughly 8 million people who signed up this year, the administration has set

After the beheading of another Western captive by ISIS, an international conference convened Monday in Paris to talk about how to tackle the threat posed by the Islamic extremist group. The Sunni jihadist group underlined its barbaric credentials over the weekend, posting a video showing the beheading of British aid worker David Haines and threatening the life of another hostage from the United Kingdom. It was the third videotaped killing of a Western hostage released in less than a month. The latest killing, ISIS said, was "a message to the allies of America" -- a direct challenge to the United States. President Barack Obama

Another in Florida said her father was drunk, wielding a machine gun and threatening their family. In each case, SWAT teams dispatched to the scene found no violent criminals or wounded victims - only video game players sitting at their computers, the startled victims of a hoax known as "swatting." EDINBURGH - Scottish support for independence has declined, a poll for Survation showed on Saturday, widening the lead for the pro-union campaign just 5 days before Scotland votes on whether to separate from the rest of the United Kingdom. A Survation poll on behalf of the pro-union Better Together campaign found support for staying in the United Kingdom was at 54 percent, while 46 percent were planning to vote for independence on Sept. 18, once undecideds were excluded. The poll comes as a boost to the anti-independence campaign after the latest "poll of polls" on Friday showed the vote remained

Members of Congress and the White House anticipated a peace dividend by winding down America´s foreign wars, closing bases and shedding tens of thousands of troops. But President Obama´s new, open-ended strategy to confront Islamic State fighters in Iraq and Syria is likely to eat into some of the nearly $500 billion in Pentagon spending cuts that were planned over the next decade. The first five weeks of U.S. airstrikes in northern Iraq has cost $262.5 million, according to the Pentagon, and Obama personally lobbied key members of Congress in recent days to appropriate $500 million to help train and arm Syrian

The unelected and unaccountable sages at the World Health Organization (WHO) can’t seem to help themselves or resist the temptation to try to regulate the behavior of everyone on the planet. This is a shame, really, because a group like that could actually do some good if they stuck to trying to get basic supplies and medical care to people in remote, poverty stricken countries. But rather than devoting themselves to such laudable goals, they’re once again pushing to get every government on the planet to jack up sin taxes on tobacco.(This is something they’ve tried before, as I wrote

CHICAGO/MILWAUKEE — A federal appeals court has reinstated Wisconsin’s voter photo identification law. U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman struck the law down as unconstitutional in April, saying it unfairly burdens poor and minority voters who may lack such identification. Republican Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen asked the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago to overturn that ruling. The 7th Circuit issued a ruling late Friday afternoon lifting Aldeman’s stay and allowing the law to go into effect before the November elections. State attorneys asked a three-judge 7th Circuit panel during oral arguments on Friday to immediately reinstate the law. Van Hollen’s appeal remains

Of the 48 states on the list, three contributed troops to the invasion force (the United Kingdom, Australia and Poland). There’s a lot of competition for Barack Obama’s biggest lie. The man who could assure the American public with a straight face over thirty times that they could keep their doctor under his health plan, when he knew that to be completely false, is one hellluva fibber. But execrable as that serial prevarication may have been, it doesn’t hold a proverbial candle to his most recent whopper — that the Islamic State is not Islamic — not to mention its corollary, or perhaps subsidiary lie, that real religions do not indulge in murder. Is a mutiny happening around President Obama? It appears possible that the president may not have made two of his most recent decisions with complete free will. The announcement that he would delay his immigration initiative until after the election and his formal announcement that the United States would take military action against the Islamic State could have been coerced. Maybe Democratic leaders in Congress and a few members of the Obama team have had it. Could it be that, after President Obama briefed Democrats in Congress on the immigration plan, they balked? Maybe the president was told that, if he
