Migrants who travel to Britain from outside Europe for NHS treatment will be charged 150 percent of the cost in a new crackdown on welfare tourism to be unveiled by ministers today. [Snip] Mr Hunt will announce that NHS trusts must take the personal details of foreign patients so they can be traced and made to pay. The hospital will get 75 percent of the cost of the treatment up-front and the same amount again when the patient pays the bill. Hospital trusts that fail to identify and bill chargeable patients will be fined. There are an estimated 260,000 non-European

I think that this is a great idea. Unfortunately, if we tried to do the same thing the world would scream that we´re inhumane. Yet, I would bet that our hospitals are being abused even more than NHS. Don´t know for sure, but I think it would be a safe bet.

Outrage as France become first country
in world to ban pro-Palestine demos
Daily Mail [UK], by Peter Allen    Original Article

France´s Socialist government provoked outrage today by becoming the first in the world to ban protests against Israeli action in Palestine. In what is viewed as an outrageous attack on democracy, Socialist Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said mass demonstrations planned for the weekend should be halted. [Snip] Thousands were set to march against the ongoing slaughter in Gaza, calling for an immediate end to hostilities in which civilians including many children have been killed. But Mr Cazeneuve fears there might be a repeat of the fights between ‘ultra’ Jewish vigilantes and pro-Palestinians which happened after a demonstration last Sunday.

Just a day after media reports warned that no progress was being made in negotiations between the P5+1 alliance of Western nations and Iran regarding that nation’s illegal nuclear weapons program, US Secretary of State John Kerry cited significant progress in a bid to set the state for an expected announcement of yet another reprieve for Iran’s nuclear program. “I have said and repeat,” Kerry told reporters in Vienna, “there has been tangible progress on key issues.” Iran´s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif backed Kerry up, telling reporters that enough progress has been made to justify an extension of the

The situation in Ukraine may be even more dangerous and unstable than we feared. According to this report from the Russian media, the separatists widely blamed for shooting down Malaysia Airlines MH17 are in control not just of one Buk missile launcher but a whole regiment of them. The self-defense forces of Donetsk People’s Republic seized control of a Ukrainian anti-air military installation, RIA Novosti reports. [Snip] This report, from the end of last month, has had little play in the Western media, which has preferred to focus on reports from security sources that the rocket launchers (and tanks and

Malaysia Airlines disaster: The West

It might have seemed as if the rebellion by Russian separatists in Ukraine, fostered by Vladimir Putin, was a faraway war in a distant land. But when the passengers and crew of Flight MH17 flew into that war zone and became its latest victims, the global implications of the Ukrainian crisis became apparent. It is no longer “just” Russians and Ukrainians dying: as so often happens, an unstable region is putting the wider world at risk. Over the past few years, the West’s foreign policy has been marked by a sense of over-caution, even retreat. This is understandable. The death

So for the time being the shaky centre of Europe is holding. Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin are at least talking, while the Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko continues to show admirable restraint. But listen closely and it is hard not to hear the echoes of history in Europe’s collective failure to confront naked Russian aggression. For weeks now, the US--supported by Britain, to the irritation of many of our European allies--has been demanding tougher sanctions against Moscow, warning of what might happen if nothing was done to stop Putin giving heavy weapons to separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine.

They all get retweeted an incredible amount, alongside broken-heart emoticons or phrases such as “Grieve for the children of Palestine” and statements like: “Every time I close my eyes, I see the innocent children of Palestine running, I hear them scream.” It all has the look and feel and sound of moral pornography, designed less to enlighten people about what is going in Israel-Gaza--war harms

We should not be surprised that Moscow is categorically rejecting the accusation that it was responsible for the Malaysian airline disaster. For the default position of Russian President Vladimir Putin when confronted with some unpalatable truth is to tell a bare-faced lie. Remember how, when Russian Spetsnaz special forces were rampaging through Crimea earlier this year, Mr Putin told a Russian press conference that there were no Russian forces in Ukraine? Well, now we are dealing with a similar situation following the airline disaster, with the Russian leader trying to shift the blame for the crash on to anyone but

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk today called on world powers to support his government in bringing to justice ´those b****** who committed this international crime´ after a passenger plane was shot down over his country. The official, who earlier said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu´s decision-making security cabinet had agreed to the truce, later told Reuters the forum had not yet

It is at times like these, when he is pushed kicking and screaming into the crucible, that Obama’s callowness shows. For his supporters, that jejune, jocular air has been a plus for almost six years. For the rest of us, it has served as a liability and an irritation. Yesterday, it became a wholesale embarrassment. On the perpetual-campaign trail, the pattern is familiar. Trotting up to the podium, the president fist-bumps the audience’s stragglers and smiles a toothy and humble grin at those who catch his eye. While speaking, he responds to obsequy with obsequy — “I love you too!” he

Along with citing a list of moderate GOP governors with last names like Bush and Christie as potential 2016 GOP presidential candidates, "Arizona Sen. Political pundits are divided about the merits of House Speaker John Boehner´s lawsuit against President Obama´s employer mandate. The two backing Boehner and two constitutional law experts who oppose the suit testified Wednesday before the House Rules Committee. The uber presidency George Washington University Law Prof. Jonathan Turley voted for Obama but in recent months has become perhaps the most visible critic of what he views as a

Now that the U.S.-Russia relationship has broken down, Moscow could throw a wrench into the teetering nuclear negotiations with Iran. The escalating tensions between Washington and Moscow, brought to fever by the MH17 airliner disaster, are finally to the point where they threaten to spoil the number one item on President Obama’s foreign policy agenda: the nuclear talks with Iran. The man doing the threatening is Russian President Vladimir Putin.Earlier this week, Putin promised to retaliate against the United States for new sanctions targeting his friends and business associates, as well as large Russian defense, energy, and financial firms. Perhaps because Republicans insist on having a secure border before discussing any type of immigration reform legislation. Democrats don’t think people will catch up to this at some point? The PR game that carried Obama – health care lies and all – to the White House is showing significant signs of incompetent wear and tear
