North Korean Ship Tests the
Waters Near America´s Shores

Forbes, by Claudia Rosett

Posted By:PageTurner, 7/14/2014 3:29:54 AM

It’s not often that North Korean-flagged freighters turn up near America’s shores, but when they do, they deserve attention. North Korea has a prolific record of arms smuggling, narcotics dealing, counterfeiting, terrorist ties and missile and nuclear proliferation. So, let’s hope U.S. authorities are keeping a close eye on a North Korean cargo ship called the Mu Du Bong, which late last month called at Cuba, then vanished from the commercial shipping grid for more than a week. This past Thursday, July 10, the Mu Du Bong reappeared at Havana, then began steaming north of Cuba, and as of this

The Obamas will probably invite them to the White House and put the crew up for free in a nice hotel. We´ll get the bill, of course.

Chile passes landmark tax reform into law

SANTIAGO - Chile´s Congress approved President Michelle Bachelet´s tax reform bill on Wednesday evening, the first key part of the center-left leader´s tax-and-spend campaign pledge to reduce inequality. The reform, which will increase the cost of doing business in Chile by raising corporate taxes and closing some tax exemptions, had been fiercely opposed by right-wing politicians and business leaders, who say it will crimp investment at a time when economic growth is slowing. The government says the extra cash it will bring in - equivalent to about 3 percentage points of gross domestic product by 2018 - is needed to pay

Pension ´spiking´ to cost CalPERS

Taxpayers and local governments are on the hook to pay nearly $800 million stemming from "legal" pension spiking over the next two decades, the state controller said Tuesday. The price tag came as Controller John Chiang issued a new audit of the California Public Employees´ Retirement System. The audit of 11 state and local government agencies found no illegal pension spiking but concluded that the country´s largest public retirement fund makes itself vulnerable to the practice by not aggressively reviewing its 3,100 member agencies´ payroll records. Pension spiking is the practice of hiking a public employee´s pay, through a promotion or salary

SALT LAKE CITY — A lunch worker did not follow policy when taking away meals from students at a local elementary school in late January, an independent review released Thursday concluded. Some parties disagree, saying the lunch worker should not shoulder blame for administrative errors and inconsistencies between policy and practice. "The responsibilities that are in (the report) weren´t being followed by the principal, and so I believe that´s more of a contributing factor to what happened, and putting this blame on the frontline worker, I believe, is just unfair," said Michael Clara, Salt Lake City School Board member over District 2. Food inflation climbs 210%

In an attempt to slow down the increase in food prices, the Venezuelan government has implemented a price regulation policy for many products, managed a large network of agro-industrial companies, and held thousands of hectares in the agricultural sectors. However, the results are below the expectations. Based on the figures disclosed by the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV), the average price of food and non-alcoholic beverages skyrocketed 210% in August 2012 - August 2014. Analysts attributed the leap mainly to the large number of bills printed by the central bank and thus injected into the economy to meet expenditure, which surpasses the

The Guarani tribes that lived in South America in the 17th century used to play a sport similar to soccer when the Jesuits arrived to establish their missions, claims a video based on historical documents released by Paraguay’s Secretary for Culture. Entitled “The Guaranies invented soccer,” the video collects findings made by anthropologists who studied the Jesuits’ legacy in the country. Jesuit chroniclers from the 17th, 18th Century wrote about a ball game played on foot called “mangai”. The ball was manufactured with the honey-like resin of a tree known as Mangaisi. “The Guaranis made a vertical incision on the tree

Venezuela´s annual inflation rate has risen to 63.4%, the highest in Latin America, according to official figures published on Tuesday. The figures are the first released by the central bank since May, which has led critics to accuse the government of withholding data for political reasons. The poor state of the economy, among other issues, triggered mass anti-government protests earlier this year. They have since died down, but many continue to grapple with shortages. The central bank did not publish its scarcity index, a measure of goods that are missing from store shelves, but shortages of basic items such as flour, milk and toilet

Numbers disclosed by the Central Bank of Venezuela (BCV) show accrued inflation in 2014 hit 39% by the end of August, which translates into the highest increase in prices recorded over the first eight months of the year since 1997. José Guerra, former economic research manager at the BCV, explained that "demand soars because the BCV prints bolivars to finance the government, while supply declines due to a drop in imports, because there have been cuts in the supply of dollars. In addition, production has plummeted, especially food production." Over the last 12 months, the cost of food and non-alcoholic

Federal agents launched a series of raids in the downtown Los Angeles fashion district on Wednesday and seized an estimated $65 million in cash and other assets they allege were part of a widespread attempt by Mexican drug cartels to launder narcotics profits. Nine people were arrested in raids targeting 70 locations, many of them businesses in the fashion district. Federal officials said they believe the drug organizations have used numerous businesses in the garment district to convert their vast earnings into pesos, turning Los Angeles into a hub for “trade-based money laundering.”

Liberal-leaning late-night talk show host Bill Maher told reporters Wednesday that he could see voting for Republican Sen. Rand Paul could possibly get my vote,” Mr. Maher, the host of HBO’s “Real Time,” told The Hill. Mr. Maher admitted that he favored the less adventurous foreign policy espoused by Mr. Paul’s father, former Texas Republican Rep. PARIS — France´s summer is fast becoming a memory, and so is one of its iconic beach sights: the topless woman. As few as 2 percent of French women under 35 now say they want to bare their breasts, according to an Elle magazine poll this summer. It´s a far cry from the once-ubiquitous scenes of semi-nudity on the French Riviera, epitomized by 1960s blond bombshell Brigitte Bardot. "It´s seen as vulgar. People are more prudish these days," explains 60-year old Muriel Trazie, keeping her breasts out of the public eye while sunning herself on Paris Plages, the French capital´s summer beach. Sandra

WASHINGTON--US President Barack Obama will tell the American people on Wednesday night that he plans to order strikes against Islamic State forces in both Syria and Iraq until the group is ultimately destroyed. The president´s plan includes additional support for opposition militias in Syria vetted by the United States, which will serve as a ground force complementing America´s air campaign. [Snip] The "comprehensive strategy," as described by one White House official, will involve "US military action and support for the forces combating ISIL [Islamic State] on the ground–both the opposition in Syria and a new, inclusive Iraqi government."

As we suspected, President Obama tried in his Wednesday-night speech to make it sound like he was doing something new when he, in fact, he is not. Moreover, in describing his response, he made plain that he doesn’t take the threat to the homeland seriously. For a threat his advisers say is greater than that posed by al-Qaeda after 2001, he proposed measures suitable for Yemen and Somalia. No, really — that’s the plan. For starters, the president doesn’t believe the Islamic State is a current threat to the U.S.: “So ISIL poses a threat to the people of Iraq

Rarely has a president faced a greater challenge in establishing his credibility for a new foreign-policy move than Barack Obama did in his nationally televised speech tonight. A CNN poll earlier this week found that just 30 percent of voters thought Obama had presented a clear plan for fighting the Islamic State. While Obama now pledges to ask Congress to train and aid Syrian rebels who would fight the group, voters remember that he backed similar plans in Syria in 2013, when his advisers saw Syrian president Bashar Assad as the major threat. President Obama just announced that he is bringing a counter-terrorism strategy to an insurgency fight. He was at pains to repeat the phrase “counter-terror” four times in a short speech. Noting that ISIL is not a state (partly because the international community thankfully does not recognize it), he declared, “ISIL is a terrorist organization, pure and simple. And it has no vision other than the slaughter of all who stand in its way.” Neither of those sentences, unfortunately, is true. ISIL is an insurgent group that controls enormous territory in Iraq and Syria that it governs. It maneuvers conventional light

Throughout his presidency, President Obama has emphasized one point while talking about Islamist extremists: They are not practicing Islam, he has said, they are perverting it. He took that a step further Wednesday night. While announcing that he´s expanding the campaign against the Islamic State extremist group into Syria, Obama said flatly that this group, which is trying to install a caliphate in the Middle East, "is not Islamic." He didn´t say they are perverting their religion; he said they´re not even part of that religion. "No religion condones the killing of innocents, and the vast majority of [the Islamic State´s] victims

Obama did not describe his authorization of direct military action to defeat the Islamic State terror group as a conventional war.
