New York — A banner aiming to change people´s minds about what swastikas stand for has stirred outrage after it flew over beaches in New York City and on Long Island. Some beachgoers were appalled and officials fielded complaints after a plane toted the banner Saturday. The banner featured swastikas, a peace sign, a Star of David and a "pro-swastika" message. It was arranged by the International Raelian Movement. The group tries annually to remind people that before Adolf Hitler´s rise, the swastika was an ancient symbol of well-being to Hindus and Buddhists, among others. The Raelians — who believe

Hard to imagine that this was not an anti-semitic message. For all of the liberal sensitivities on racism, how do they overlook what is happening to Israel?

The hammer & sickle should provoke a similar reaction. But liberals would probably applaud wildly.

Mayors of three of the nation’s largest cities are pledging to take more action against climate change by implementing new projects to curb greenhouse gas emissions and persuading other leaders to do the same. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Houston Mayor Annise Parker and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter will announce the new initiative Monday in New York in advance of a United Nations climate summit being held this week. Under the plan, the mayors will commit to set or renew aggressive targets for their cities’ greenhouse gas reductions, develop new standards to track and report pollution sources at least once a year,

A British-Pakistani man is wanted for questioning over an alleged £1bn fraud in Italy that is suspected to have been used to fund Middle Eastern terror groups. Prosecutors in Milan have said they are trying to trace the man over an alleged international carbon-trading scam. It was reportedly uncovered when British and American intelligence agencies found a cache of documents in a cave near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border – not far from the town where Osama bin Laden was killed by US special forces in 2011. Italian magistrates said the investigation centred on a company called S F Energy Trading

Maybe it’s war fatigue. Maybe climate change is consuming all the protest energy right now. Maybe momentum just needs to build. But most likely, all of the above are the reasons antiwar protests didn’t erupt throughout the Bay Area, veteran activists say, after U.S. warplanes roared over the Syrian border Tuesday to bomb more than a dozen enclaves of Islamic radical jihadists into rubble. Some activists even conceded that many people weren’t going into the streets because the militants being targeted deserved to be dealt with, if not killed. By Tuesday afternoon, there were still no loud demonstrations to be found.

The enterovirus, a more virulent strain of the virus that causes the common cold, can lead to fever, sneezing and coughing in mild cases. Hospitalization for breathing difficulties and wheezing is required in more severe cases. The most recent diagnosis of the virus was Tuesday

Confronted by a reporter asking if he would give up his phone and car, the environmental lawyer became visibly irate before grabbing the microphone and accusing her of ´destroying democracy´ as a member of the press. President Barack Obama saluted a pair of United States Marines on Tuesday while holding what appeared to be a styrofoam cup in his saluting hand, a breach of military regulations that won´t win him fans among veterans and servicemen. Obama is known for drinking tea, not coffee, when he travels, especially before delivering speeches. On Tuesday, shortly after announcing to the American public that the United States was now bombing ISIS in Syria, the President of the United States flew to New York to address the United Nations – on climate change. In other words, it was a typical Barack Obama whirligig. Even as American warplanes struck targets in Syria, even as regimes tottered in Jordan and Iraq and Yemen,

Rush Limbaugh apparently tips generously, which sometimes makes people who dislike him feel quite awkward. In one case, a waitress-turned-award-winning-author revealed that she felt so awkward, that she donated both of his $1,000 tips to an abortion charity. Merritt Tierce, whose debut novel Love Me Back chronicles her time at a high-end Dallas steakhouse, revealed in an interview with Dallas News that, at the time, she was also the executive director of the Texas Equal Abortion (TEA) Fund, which provides financial assistance to low-income women seeking abortions.

If there is one thing Chelsea Clinton is most worried about, it may be that her soon-to-be child will grow up in a world without elephants. Standing alongside her mother, Hillary Clinton, at the Clinton Global Initiative this afternoon, the very-pregnant former first daughter warned the plight of African elephants, killed for their ivory tusks, is an “existential” one, and said that if the current poaching rates continue, elephants could be few and far between within the next decade. If so, this means Chelsea Clinton’s favorite animal could be something her child would never know. “The child Marc and I

The Republican Party’s top leader in Congress is catching flak for a comment that appears to call the jobless lazy – a comment that has rekindled an old challenge for the party: appearing insensitive or uncaring toward Americans who are poor or in financial difficulty. House Speaker John Boehner was asked after a speech last week to comment on a plan for addressing poverty – promoted by a Republican colleague, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. Speaker Boehner gave a response that was favorable toward Representative Ryan´s plan, but not so favorable about Americans’ work ethic.
