Golfer-in-Chief Hits the Links

Independent Journal Review, by Mike Miller

On Saturday, President Obama interrupted his busy schedule of playing pool, drinking beer and jumping lines at BBQ joints to play golf an exclusive private country club in Maryland with ESPN host Michael Wilbon. Not like he has anything else to do, right? There’s nothing unusual about the president hitting the golf course – he’s done it at least a record-setting 177 times over his term. But it’s who he is playing golf with that’s interesting. As IJReview’s current Editor-at-Large Larry O’Connor reported for Breitbart in November 2013, Wilbon made the eyebrow-raising comment: “People can be upset with me if

(Video) Friday First Lady Michelle Obama hosted the first "Kids State Dinner” in the East Room of the White House, which treated the 54 children who won a nationwide healthy meal recipe contest sponsored by the food magazine Epicurious and the Education and Agriculture departments to a state dinner. The first lady told the kid chefs from each state, the District of Columbia, and three U.S. territories, "I need you guys to make your voices heard," because, she explained, "folks in Congress [are] trying to undo some of the progress that we’ve made to get healthier food into our schools."

President Obama called on Congress Saturday to approve measures that he said would help the middle class, from a job-training initiative to comprehensive immigration reform. “We have to make sure our economy works for every working American,” Mr. Obama said in his weekly address. “My opportunity agenda does that.” But Rep. Steve Scalise, Louisiana Republican and incoming House majority whip, told Mr. Obama to “put down your pen and phone” used for executive actions and to urge Senate Democrats to stop blocking the GOP’s measures to help the economy. He said Mr. Obama and congressional Democrats should support efforts such

AMSTERDAM — Flags flew at half-staff Friday in this small but extremely international country, one that is accustomed to standing on the forefront of global cultural debates over such things as gay rights, euthanasia and marijuana policies. But on Thursday, after the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, the Netherlands found itself thrust squarely into an unaccustomed role at the center of the realpolitik of the conflict in Ukraine. It seemed as if everyone in the Netherlands, a country of 16 million people, knew someone among the 189 Dutch nationals killed in the crash, whether personally, or as a friend

We don’t know if they are gang members. We don’t even know how old they are,” Linda Zuern, a member of the Board of Selectmen in Bourne, said yesterday. “If Deval Patrick thinks this is such a great idea,

Last night saw the premier in Denver of Joel Gilbert’s There’s No Place Like Utopia, a film that gets to the heart of the progressive/communist project for America and where it is leading us. Joel uses the Wizard of Oz as an extended metaphor for the trickery and fraud that underlies the quest to perfect human nature and bring about heaven on earth that Marx promised. The film is disarming in many ways, for it tackles great intellectual themes, usually the province of dense prose, and uses images and personality to tell the story in a highly accessible way. Some of the districts had been offering free breakfast for all students and will continue to do so. Now, district officials are participating in the so-called Community Eligibility Provision funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The program is part of the Hungry-Free Kids Act of 2010, which was projected to boost federal spending on nutrition programs by $79 million over

The IRS said under oath Friday that former agency official Lois Lerner’s hard drive was destroyed and recycled, echoing earlier testimony from its commissioner. In its most extensive comments yet on Lerner’s hard drive, the agency said in court filings Friday that the hard drive was destroyed in 2011 to protect confidential taxpayer information. Before that, the IRS said, the hard drive underwent a process designed to permanently erase stored data. That process occurred after a series of IRS technical officers examined Lerner’s hard drive, and found that it couldn’t be restored after a crash. The IRS’s court filings came

Documents from the Bill Clinton presidency that were publicly released Friday reveal the administration´s strategy -- and the challenges top aides encountered -- in readying Ruth Bader Ginsburg for her Senate confirmation hearing after her nomination for Supreme Court. One document gives aides suggestions for prepping Ginsburg, saying the nominee had "incredible powers of recollection" and "will clearly know all of the law" but was a "very slow answerer" whose answers were "typically shorter than the questions." The memo tells aides to ask her short practice questions leading up to the hearing, since Ginsburg was reportedly worried that if questions

It is at times like these, when he is pushed kicking and screaming into the crucible, that Obama’s callowness shows. For his supporters, that jejune, jocular air has been a plus for almost six years. For the rest of us, it has served as a liability and an irritation. Yesterday, it became a wholesale embarrassment. On the perpetual-campaign trail, the pattern is familiar. Trotting up to the podium, the president fist-bumps the audience’s stragglers and smiles a toothy and humble grin at those who catch his eye. While speaking, he responds to obsequy with obsequy — “I love you too!” he

Political pundits are divided about the merits of House Speaker John Boehner´s lawsuit against President Obama´s employer mandate. The two backing Boehner and two constitutional law experts who oppose the suit testified Wednesday before the House Rules Committee.
