Hometown paper to Harry Reid:
‘Quit the race-baiting already’

Washington Times, by Jessica Chasmar

Original Article

Nevada’s largest daily newspaper is telling Sen. Harry Reid to “quit the race-baiting already” after he embarrassingly referred to Clarence Thomas as a white man. “Harry Reid is the da Vinci of distraction,” the Las Vegas Review-Journal wrote Friday. “The moment any scandal, policy failure or political defeat crashes down on him — and there have been plenty the past few years — the Senate majority leader unleashes outrageous rhetoric that’s better suited for a sandbox than what once passed for the world’s greatest deliberative body. “Worse, the Nevada Democrat has become especially fond of slinging race cards just to crank up the outrage,”

Federal agencies ranging from the the Department of Health and Human Services to the Pentagon are working to address a surge of unaccompanied immigrant children at the U.S-Mexico border, a problem that President Obama last month described as an “urgent humanitarian situation.” The Obama administration has estimated that the U.S. will pick up 60,000 unaccompanied children at the Southwest border by the end of September, although revised Border Patrol estimates now put the figure closer to 90,000. (Snip) Already, the administration plans to spend nearly $870 million to provide for the children, according to an

Former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton responded Tuesday to Sen. Marco Rubio´s charge that she is a "20th century candidate," suggesting that all elections are about what´s next. (Snip) Clinton said that voters need to evaluate a candidate´s record to determine how the candidate will behave in the future. "Every election is about the future. And certainly anyone who wishes to run for president has to make it clear how the experience that you´ve had in the past and what you believe and how you have acted on those beliefs will translate into positive results for the American people," Clinton said. Paris - Undeterred by criticism from his European allies, French President François Hollande said today he would proceed with the controversial sale of a warship to Russia, but may reconsider the sale of a second ship. European Union foreign ministers met today in Brussels to discuss greater sanctions on Russia over the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. It’s the first gathering of the 28-member bloc since the downing of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17, allegedly by pro-Russia rebels in Ukraine. Almost 300 people, including more than 200 EU nationals, died. EU leaders have been divided since day one over how to force Russian President

Eating More Fruits and

Fruits and vegetables are good for your health, but there´s not enough evidence to prove that on their own they can help with weight loss. The research, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, reviewed studies that looked at fruit and vegetable consumption and weight gain, and concluded that simply eating more doesn’t doesn’t slim waistlines. Loading up on more fruits and vegetables, without taking out more high-calorie foods like junk food, or making other lifestyle changes such as exercising, won’t have a significant affect on weight. And that’s especially true if the veggies are fried or coated in butter or cheese.

Citing Maryland’s recently enacted firearm laws and the prospect of more restrictions, the U.S. arm of legendary Italian gunmaker Beretta announced Tuesday that it would move its manufacturing operations to Tennessee next year. The move makes Beretta the latest maker of guns or ammunition to move all or part of its operations to another state because of tightened gun control laws. General Manager Jeff Cooper said an early version of a statute passed last year by the Maryland state Senate would have prohibited the company from manufacturing or storing products in the state. “While we were able in the Maryland House of Delegates to

Businessman David Perdue stunned Georgia’s Republican political establishment Tuesday by capturing the party’s U.S. Senate nomination in his first run for office. The former CEO of Reebok and Dollar General toppled 11-term Rep. Jack Kingston by a narrow margin, setting up a battle of political newcomers with famous kin in the fall. Perdue’s cousin, Sonny, was a two-term governor and Nunn’s father, Sam, was a four-term U.S. Senator. In addition to his famous last name and lingering political network from his cousin, Perdue deployed $3 million of his own money to back his bid. Still, he was outspent by Kingston and allied Super PACs –

There were only a few ways Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) could react to HBO’s “True Blood” portrayal of Texas Republicans being murdered at a fictitious Cruz fundraiser. He could have ignored it, or laughed it off. But he went political. A scene in Sunday’s episode took place at the George W. Bush Presidential Library, where a Cruz function was being held. The vampires who went made disparaging comments about the Republicans in attendance (What do you expect? It’s Hollywood.) and then there was a vicious bloodbath. It was just a matter of time. Given the heavy travel patterns to Caribbean countries where the new mosquito-born virus is spreading widely, it was inevitable that someone would bring it back to Dallas County. Dallas County Health and Human Services confirmed Tuesday the first case of imported Chikungunya virus in Dallas County this year. There is no specific medication available to treat the virus and there is not a vaccine. Avoiding mosquito bites is the key to avoid getting infected.

New York - Chrysler recalled about 792,000 older SUVs Tuesday for ignition switch problems. The flaw affects Jeep Commanders from model years 2006-2007 and Jeep Grand Cherokees from 2005-2007. The issue is linked to one accident, but the company is unaware of any related injuries. The problem can cause the ignition key to move out of the "on" position while the car is being driven, usually because it was bumped by a driver´s knee, the company said in a statement. That could cause the engine to stall and the front airbags to stop working. Problems with ignition switches have been found in millions of vehicles recalled this year.

Several locals near the StroiDom store in Torez, about 10 miles from where the plane crashed, said Tuesday that they had seen what appeared to be a missile launcher driving through their town a few hours before the plane was shot down last Thursday. Their story appears to corroborate Ukrainian claims that the separatist rebels had a sophisticated missile launcher and drove it to the site

In a potentially crippling blow to Obamacare, a federal appeals court panel declared Tuesday that government subsidies worth billions of dollars that helped 4.7 million people buy insurance on HealthCare.gov are illegal. The 2-1 ruling said such subsidies can be granted only to people who bought insurance in an Obamacare exchange run by an individual state or the District of Columbia—not on the federally run exchange HealthCare.gov. "Section 36B plainly makes subsidies available in the Exchanges established by states," wrote Senior Circuit Judge Raymond Randolph in his majority opinion, where he was joined by Judge Thomas Griffith. I think he´s got great people skills. He enjoys politics, and he´s got important relationships up on the Hill (in Congress) that would serve him well." "Joe would

Days after IRS officials said in a sworn statement that former top agency employee Lois G. The Internal Revenue Service solicitation for “media destruction” services reflects an otherwise routine job to protect sensitive taxpayer information, but it was made while the agency’s record destruction practices remain under a sharp congressional spotlight.
