Colorblind Harry Reid continues to divide
Review Journal [Las Vegas, NV], by Editorial

Harry Reid is the da Vinci of distraction. The moment any scandal, policy failure or political defeat crashes down on him — and there have been plenty the past few years — the Senate majority leader unleashes outrageous rhetoric that’s better suited for a sandbox than what once passed for the world’s greatest deliberative body. Worse, the Nevada Democrat has become especially fond of slinging race cards just to crank up the outrage. Last week, Sen. Reid was in rare form following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn part of the Affordable Care Act’s contraception mandate. The 5-4 ruling declared

I think everybody here in Nevada knows that Harry Reid is demonstrating his decreasing mental acuity. He used to be a fairly decent man and senator, for a Democrat. Something happened at some point that drove him completely hard leftist.

The Worrying Vacuity Of Hillary Clinton
The Dish, by Andrew Sullivan    Original Article

I’ve tried to avoid the Clinton book tour bullshit this past month or so. Not good for my blood pressure. When I checked in occasionally, it was to discover that nothing much has changed. The Clintons are still self-pitying money-grubbers – $12 million in speaking fees since she left the State Department? – and now their offspring, exploiting her nepotistic advantage with all the scrupulous ethics of her parents, is continuing the grift. If you ask of Clinton what she’s fighting for, what she believes in, if you want to get her to disagree with you on something, good luck.

Allies of Bill and Hillary Clinton have declared war against Barbara Comstock, the Republican candidate for Virginia´s 10th District and former Clinton opposition researcher. Comstock rose to prominence in the 1990s first as a staffer for Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., and then as the chief counsel for the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. Her adeptness at reading government documents and finding information that led to the removal of Clinton staffers made her a star on the Right. And now she’s running for Congress to replace Wolf. Time for the Clinton machine to go to war. And go to war

Ryan’s Anti-Poverty Plan
National Review Online, by Editors    Original Article

President Obama famously accused Representative Paul Ryan (R., Wisc.) of “thinly veiled Social Darwinism” for one of his budgets. It will take a special kind of cynicism to make that claim about Ryan’s new anti-poverty proposal. Obama’s partisans will no doubt find a way, but fair-minded observers will see a creative, thoughtful approach to a topic that’s often politically neglected. Ryan proposes and endorses a range of ideas to fix the safety net and address the root causes of poverty. He would offer states the option of an “Opportunity Grant” to replace, dollar for dollar, the amount of money they currently

The Democratic-wannabe mice

If Hillary Clinton is inevitable, why are so many mice scurrying about under her feet? Hillary is supposed to be the juggernaut of the ages, awash in money, feminist adulation and nostalgia for the security and serenity of the Clinton years, when nothing much happened beyond Bubba’s Oval Office pantry. Some Democrats, and not just the players on the fringe, are prowling the grass roots (or at least the roster of the party) now in search of an alternative to four more years with Bonnie and Clod. Some are willing to be that alternative themselves. If the Great Mentioner won’t mention

National Guard in Texas

HOUSTON — When Gov. Rick Perry of Texas announced plans to deploy 1,000 National Guard troops to help with the border crisis, it came with a power unexpected by some. By deploying them himself rather than through Washington, he has the power to order the troops to make arrests and apprehensions, something Guard troops in past border deployments have been prohibited from doing. Immigrant rights advocates and others, including former federal officials involved in previous National Guard mobilizations, said the troops would lack both training and federal oversight, creating a risk of civil rights violations and deadly encounters with immigrants. In 1983, Barack Obama was a senior at Columbia University. He was not well known. He lived off-campus, had a few close friends, and spent a lot of time reading. He went to some meetings of the Black Students Association, but no one remembers seeing him there. He majored in political science, with a concentration in international relations, and classmates and professors say he was an attentive and intelligent student. But he was not an active participant in student life. He was not a student radical. He did not go on a hunger strike. He did not storm any administration

Maybe US world leadership isn’t dead after all: Our government actually led from the front in the Middle East this week. Too bad it was the Federal Aviation Administration, awarding Hamas its first tangible war victory over Israel. True, Secretary of State John Kerry is still in “leading from behind” mode, pushing an “immediate” Hamas-Israel ceasefire from behind Egypt, the United Nations, Qatar, Turkey, the Palestinian Authority and so on. Rather than fully supporting America’s top Mideast ally in a war against fanatic jihadist terrorists, Kerry’s trying to strike a fair balance — consulting Israel and anti-Hamas Egypt one day, and Hamas’

First lady Michelle Obama jumped into the White House fundraising spree on Thursday, prodding supporters in Chicago to hand over the maximum campaign contribution in an attempt to shore up Democrats´ chances in upcoming midterm elections. Her entreaty came as her husband, President Barack Obama, capped a three-day fundraising swing on the West Coast, bringing in millions of dollars for the committees charged with electing Democrats to office. "We need you to write the biggest, fattest check that you can possibly write," Mrs. Obama told a crowd of donors in Chicago, her hometown. Watch Obamacare Architect Jonathan

Earlier this week, a three-judge panel in the D.C. Circuit Court ruled that, contrary to the Obama administration’s implementation and an Internal Revenue Service rule, Obamacare’s subsidies for private health insurance were limited to state-run health exchanges. The reasoning for this ruling was simple: That’s what the law says. The section dealing with the creation of state exchanges and the provision of subsidies states, quite clearly, that subsidies are only available in exchanges "established by a State," which the law expressly defines as the 50 states plus the District of Columbia. Obamacare’s defenders have responded by saying that this is obviously ridiculous.

Yesterday, I outlined what we knew about Halbig v. Burwell, the case in which a federal appellate court ruled that subsidies for purchasing insurance under Obamacare can only be made available on marketplaces established by states. Now I propose to outline what we don’t know: namely, what will happen after the case winds its way through the court system. If the U.S. Supreme Court ultimately rules for the government, the answer is, “not much; things go on as they are.” But what if the justices take the case and rule for the plaintiff? The responses to what I write about the Hamas war fall into several categories. My least favorite sort of response is the kind that invokes Hitler in some way. Here is an e-mail that is representative: “I hope Hitler kills you and your family.” (Yes, it was written in the present tense.) Then there are the messages from those who seek the elimination of Israel. These run along the lines of, “Jeffrey wants blood, give him more Palestinian blood!” (I’m not sure if this tweet was riffing off the blood libel or not.) Texas Governor Rick Perry went on Hannity tonight to discuss the illegal immigrant crisis at the US southern border. Those individuals have accounted for over 3,000 homicides and over 8,000 sexual assaults. We can’t afford to wait for Washington to secure this border. We’ve had enough.”

President Obama told Democratic donors Wednesday night that most Americans don’t have time to think about the details of the Benghazi terrorist attack or the problems with Obamacare. Speaking at a fundraiser at the Los Angeles home of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” creator Shonda Rhimes, the president took his usual shots at the Republican Party, suggesting its members are focused on the wrong issues and frequently “obfuscate and they bamboozle and sometimes don’t say what’s true.” And because people are not familiar with the intricacies of many public-policy issues, Republicans can get away with such obfuscation, he said. “The Republican

A year after news of the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke, former First Lady Hillary Clinton allegedly told a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist that it was former President Bill Clinton’s abusive mother that caused his unfaithfulness and sex addiction, a new book claims. That journalist was Lucinda Franks and while her latest book, “Timeless: Love, Morgenthau, and Me,” doesn’t have much to do about the Clintons, the part that does offers never before reported information from a 1999 interview with the former First Lady. The president’s demeanor is worrying a lot of people. From the immigration crisis on the Mexican border to the Islamic State rising in Mesopotamia, Barack Obama seems totally detached from the world’s convulsions. When he does interrupt his endless rounds of golf, fundraising and photo ops, it’s for some affectless, mechanical, almost forced public statement. Regarding Ukraine, his detachment — the rote, impassive voice — borders on dissociation. His U.N. ambassador, Samantha Power, delivers an impassioned denunciation of Russia. On Saturday, more than 200 volunteers spread out across Vermont for the annual loon survey. Death-penalty opponents say the execution of an Arizona inmate who took two hours to die shows that state experiments with different drugs and dosages are a callous trial-and-error process.
