South Carolina education officials
act swiftly to replace Common Core

South Carolina´s Department of Education is moving at full speed in its effort to rewrite the state´s standards of education. [Snip] Kobrovsky said the department is acting swiftly in anticipation of the leadership change at the end of the year, when the term of Superintendent of Education Mick Zais comes to an end. Zais has been a strong opponent of Common Core standards since their adoption by the board. "The dynamics will shift after December," Kobrovsky said. "The new superintendent will likely not oppose Common Core." Many people oppose Common Core as a nationalization of public education, though it´s not

Well! It appears there are still some people left who are willing and able to fight against "progressive" brainwashing.

Be careful. Indiana´s Governor Mike Pence working in concert with his department of education and with great fanfare struck down Common Core! And replaced it with common core of another name. Same damn educational principles. You have to watch the "moderate" governors closely...they are still Establishment Republicans.

Dangerous Escalation in Ukraine: Separatists

The situation in Ukraine may be even more dangerous and unstable than we feared. According to this report from the Russian media, the separatists widely blamed for shooting down Malaysia Airlines MH17 are in control not just of one Buk missile launcher but a whole regiment of them. The self-defense forces of Donetsk People’s Republic seized control of a Ukrainian anti-air military installation, RIA Novosti reports. [Snip] This report, from the end of last month, has had little play in the Western media, which has preferred to focus on reports from security sources that the rocket launchers (and tanks and

It might have seemed as if the rebellion by Russian separatists in Ukraine, fostered by Vladimir Putin, was a faraway war in a distant land. But when the passengers and crew of Flight MH17 flew into that war zone and became its latest victims, the global implications of the Ukrainian crisis became apparent. It is no longer “just” Russians and Ukrainians dying: as so often happens, an unstable region is putting the wider world at risk. Over the past few years, the West’s foreign policy has been marked by a sense of over-caution, even retreat. This is understandable. The death

So for the time being the shaky centre of Europe is holding. Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin are at least talking, while the Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko continues to show admirable restraint. But listen closely and it is hard not to hear the echoes of history in Europe’s collective failure to confront naked Russian aggression. For weeks now, the US--supported by Britain, to the irritation of many of our European allies--has been demanding tougher sanctions against Moscow, warning of what might happen if nothing was done to stop Putin giving heavy weapons to separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine.

They all get retweeted an incredible amount, alongside broken-heart emoticons or phrases such as “Grieve for the children of Palestine” and statements like: “Every time I close my eyes, I see the innocent children of Palestine running, I hear them scream.” It all has the look and feel and sound of moral pornography, designed less to enlighten people about what is going in Israel-Gaza--war harms

We should not be surprised that Moscow is categorically rejecting the accusation that it was responsible for the Malaysian airline disaster. For the default position of Russian President Vladimir Putin when confronted with some unpalatable truth is to tell a bare-faced lie. Remember how, when Russian Spetsnaz special forces were rampaging through Crimea earlier this year, Mr Putin told a Russian press conference that there were no Russian forces in Ukraine? Well, now we are dealing with a similar situation following the airline disaster, with the Russian leader trying to shift the blame for the crash on to anyone but

Microsoft is to cut up to 18,000 jobs marking the deepest cuts in the technology firm´s 39-year history. The bulk of the cuts, around 12,500, will be in its phone unit Nokia, which Microsoft bought in April, the firm said. Microsoft pledged to cut $600m (£350.8m) per year in costs within 18 months of closing the acquisition. The cuts are much more severe than the 6,000 initially expected. Chief executive officer Satya Nadella, who took the helm in February, wants the firm to shift its focus away from software to online services, apps and devices.

COLUMBIA--Rumors of undocumented immigrants secretly being transported to South Carolina have triggered a series of protests that will take place this weekend statewide. Federal and state officials say there is no indication that undocumented immigrants are being flown or transported by bus to the Palmetto State, in the wake of the immigration crisis on the nation´s southern border. But one of the protests being assembled in Greenville for Saturday will take place at the location where it is believed undocumented men are being dropped off, said William Gheen, president of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC, a national organization based in North Carolina.

It is at times like these, when he is pushed kicking and screaming into the crucible, that Obama’s callowness shows. For his supporters, that jejune, jocular air has been a plus for almost six years. For the rest of us, it has served as a liability and an irritation. Yesterday, it became a wholesale embarrassment. On the perpetual-campaign trail, the pattern is familiar. Trotting up to the podium, the president fist-bumps the audience’s stragglers and smiles a toothy and humble grin at those who catch his eye. While speaking, he responds to obsequy with obsequy — “I love you too!” he

Political pundits are divided about the merits of House Speaker John Boehner´s lawsuit against President Obama´s employer mandate. But should the chief executive be worried that two constitutional law experts — one a conservative, the other a liberal who voted for Obama — not only think the suit has merit but will likely succeed? The two backing Boehner and two constitutional law experts who oppose the suit testified Wednesday before the House Rules Committee. The uber presidency George Washington University Law Prof. Jonathan Turley voted for Obama but in recent months has become perhaps the most visible critic of what he views as a
