Amazon asks FAA for permission

in Seattle

New York Daily News, by Deborah Hastings

Amazon has formally petitioned the FAA for permission to test its delivery drones near Seattle as part of its highly publicized push to airlift goods to people´s homes in 30 minutes or less. The controversial program called "Prime Air" is the brainchild of Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos and would use small, unmanned aircraft to zoom purchases to doorsteps. But the drive has generated bitter debate over safety and privacy issues. The retail giant is currently conducting indoor drone tests. It wants to conduct outdoor runs in the Seattle area, where its research and development labs are located. The company

If they are eventually allowed to let these things fly around what could possibly go wrong?? s/o They had better get a lot of lawyers lined up to defend the lawsuits that will follow when a child or adult is hurt or killed by one of these drones.

I fly these kinds of "drones" myself as a hobby and can not even imagine how Amazon can conceive of such a lame brain plan. No matter how well engineered or thought out, these things are not all that safe. My dog even goes nuts trying to attack my "copters" and I have to be especially careful because he tries to bite at the spinning propellers. I make sure all pets are locked up before flying them. Also, no children are near...they are fascinated by them and have no concept of the danger of the spinning props. These things are really flying four bladed blenders without any protection. heaven help the first victim of one that goes bonkers in flight.

I have no idea if drones will ever work for Amazon. I do know that people like Jeff Bezos built this country. The naysayers in this country did not. Many of those same naysayers post on this site on a regular basis.

With all the millions of packages sent out by Amazon, this doesn´t seem very practical. Judging by the UPS/Post Office/FedEx trucks I see daily, they´ll need an awful lot of drones to deliver what would be the contents of one UPS truck.

Democrats are running out of time for an economic savior. They have long predicted that an economic turnaround would be the elixir that helps them retain control of the Senate in November. But with just a handful of big economic reports left before Election Day, the economic picture is largely in place. And while the outlook is bright, voters continue to hold a dim view of their own financial prospects. “There are still a lot of families playing catch-up,” said Jared Bernstein at the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities. “It’s got to be awfully hard for the typical voter

As a candidate in the 51st Congressional District, Stephen Meade´s politics are a problem. He´s a conservative Republican in a district where voter registration is more than 2-to-1 Democratic. The district is 70% Latino, but Meade does not speak Spanish. He has no money to campaign. And his opponent, Democratic Rep. Juan Vargas, has the power of incumbency. There´s another thing that may make things difficult for the 88-year-old political novice: He wears women´s clothing. To help the shoppers, Big Labor has issued a list of union-made food and drinks that should be served at the backyard feast today. “Labor Day is the unofficial end of the summer holiday season. While the day honors the hardworking men and women who make this nation go and grow, the weekend also gives us a chance for one more big backyard barbecue blowout. Here’s some union-made food and drink to get your barbecue off to a great start,” said the AFL-CIO. They forwarded the list

Sometime on Saturday night, vandals attacked three Christian houses of worship in Columbus, Indiana, spray-painting the word "infidels" and citations of verses from the Koran on the outer walls. St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, Lakeview Church of Christ, and East Columbus Christian Church all had the word "infidels" spray-painted on them, in places of prominence to be seen by worshipers. Cited in the Indianapolis Star, Columbus police spokesperson Matt Harris said that church employees discovered the vandalism when they arrived to prepare for Sunday services. At St. Bartholomew, the words "Qur´an 3:151" were also left. That verse reads:

One of the curious aspects of the Tea Party’s emergence during the past four years is the extent to which the mainstream media have fostered the idea that this political phenomenon represents a kind of radicalism. Certainly, some politicians of the so-called Tea Party have tossed out ideas and expressions that have been silly and warped. Does that mean, though, that the Tea Party, as a broad political movement, is radical? The answer is no. The Tea Party is a reactive movement, aimed at protecting the political mainstream from radical ideas, initiatives and policies of the left. Indeed, a review

On TV, incompetence is funny, sometimes hilarious. Jackie Gleason made a career of it on the old “Honeymooners” show; Tom Haverford is absurdly incapable on “Parks and Recreation”; and Michael Scott brought the Peter Principle to new heights in “The Office.” But in real life, incompetence can be dangerous, even life-threatening (think a real-life Homer Simpson actually in charge of safety at a nuclear power plant). That’s where America finds itself nearly six years into the presidency of Barack Obama. There’s no question Mr. Obama has all but checked out. Between 1970 and 1990, the population of Philadelphia shrank by a quarter, dropping from 1.95 to 1.59 million. Like many American cities, it seemed caught in a downward spiral. Since then – like many American cities – Philadelphia has stabilized. The population now appears to have bottomed out at the millennium, and has been regaining residents over the past decade. But as it rebounds, Philly is becoming a different kind of city. In the two most recent decades, which comprise the bounce of the city’s population curve, owner-occupied housing dropped even more steeply than in the ’70s and ’80s. Between 2000 and

The divided House and Senate have managed to pass just 163 laws that garnered President Obama’s signature since the two-year term began in January 2013. At this rate, Congress will have no problem beating the previous record set during the 2011-2013 session in which 284 laws were passed. That was down from 385 laws passed in the 2009-2011 session.
