John Seigenthaler, longtime
Tennessean editor, dies at 86

Tennessean [Nashville, TN], by Staff

John Seigenthaler, a legendary Tennessee journalist, intimate confidant to two near-presidents and fierce advocate for racial equality, died Friday. He was 86. Mr. Seigenthaler passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family. "We celebrate his life — his devotion to social justice, his advocacy of human rights, and his enduring loyalty to friends and family," said his son, John Michael Seigenthaler. "He was proud of his hometown, Nashville, and grateful for the opportunity to share his energy and passion with this community." As a reporter for The Tennessean, Mr. Seigenthaler once saved a suicidal man´s life on a bridge over the

Comments:
Well, it´s too bad that the Nashville Banner was the paper that didn´t survive while the Tennessean, Nashville´s answer to the NYT, did. Seigenthaler was a Kennedy worshipper and a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat who did his part to ensure that Nashville would always have a Democrat in the mayor´s office and a Democrat in Congress. It´s not that he was a bad human being--he was just wrong about most things, and could never mend his ways.

First time I have ever heard someone described as a confidant to two "near-presidents."

I´m sure Mr. Seigenthaler was an objective reporter, despite his close friendship with the Kennedys and other democrats. /s

Napoleon once ascribed his success to being able to see things as they were, and not as reflected in a fun house mirror. “The first qualification of a general-in-chief is to possess a cool head, so that things may appear to him in their true proportions and as they really are.” (Snip) In the White House things are viewed through the peculiar prism distorted by the incumbent’s view of himself. We are accustomed to thinking of progress as continuous. But there have been other periods of globalization before ours — and somehow the world broke apart again. (Snip) But it isn’t just missiles. Reports have broke through that seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher may return home by the end of the summer. The 45-year-old German is currently situated in a rehabilitation ward in Lausanne, Switzerland and has reportedly been communicating with his family via fluttering his eyelashes. Schumacher spent several months in a coma at the Grenoble Hospital in France after suffering a near-fatal skiing accident in the French Alps on December 29, 2013. Now, however, his wife Corinna recently assured Michael’s fans that the worst is behind them: “The German Grand Prix gives me the perfect opportunity to cordially thank

It is not unusual to see a photograph of a professional golfer hitting balls on the range in front of a group of interested spectators. But it is unusual when the golfer is a pudgy man in his mid-sixties, and the onlookers include Fred Couples, Ben Crenshaw, Nick Price, and Nick Faldo. The photograph, taken before the 1995 TELUS World Skins Game at the National Golf Club of Canada, captures the fascination even the world´s best players had with the legendary Moe Norman, perhaps the greatest ball striker the game has ever known. Tiger Woods told golf writer Jaime Diaz in 2004, "Only two players have ever truly owned their swings:

There are some subjects that are almost too large for literature, even for Tolstoy, who tried to answer the question “how should one live a moral life in an ethically imperfect world?” by following the fortunes of characters in his novel War and Peace. Some characters seek fame, others sensual gratification, a few — like Napoleon — pursue an egotistical sense of power. But altogether too many of the rest are content to gnaw their way through the world like insects, not only incapable of answering Tolstoy’s question but unable to even ask it. Some even want to meet God,

Debate is raging in the expert community over what ISIS is: a state, transnational ideology, or just a way of life? (Snip) Who wants a movement? Suppose names like “caliphate” and “country” and “movement” are merely terms meant to befuddle pedantic Westerners; they are fancy words thrown in for the left wing liberals because they can understand nothing except in terms of their own provincial tropes. What if all these high flown appellations are all the same to the boys, who are really out for some six-shootin’, virgin-bustin’, kaffir-killin’ fun. The New York Times notices the smoke collecting on the ceiling of the auditorium of the world and wonders whether there might be something to worry about. (Snip) Like Sherlock on the trail, he suggests a common cause links them all. But we are advised not to worry, because the president is hot on the trail of the mystery; trying to identify the factor that connects all these catastrophes. Patience is advised, it is not elementary, my dear Watsons. The world is a complex place which only the the very smartest can understand. Little wonder then that in recent days the president seems almost to be suffering geopolitical whiplash.

A statement put out today by President Barack Obama on the occasion of a religious holiday is raising some eyebrows. The holiday is a Muslim one called "Eid-al-Fitr" and the statement says: his last month has been a time of fasting, reflection, spiritual renewal, and service to the less fortunate. While Eid marks the completion of Ramadan, it also celebrates the common values that unite us in our humanity and reinforces the obligations that people of all faiths have to each other, especially those impacted by poverty, conflict, and disease. In the United States, Eid also reminds us of the many achievements and contributions of Muslim Americans to

The ferocity of Friday’s unanimous rejection by the Israeli government of Secretary of State John Kerry’s cease was kept quiet to prevent a formal rupture of relations between the two erstwhile allies, reports Israel’s Channel 2 Television. The popular and widely-watched Saturday evening newscast quotes several unnamed high officials in the Israeli government who claimed that Kerry’s cease fire proposal represented a “complete cave-in” to Hamas’s demands for an end to fighting in its war against Israel. The official, and others cited in The Times of Israel, claimed that Israel was “stunned” and “absolutely horrified” that Kerry’s ceasefire proposal, which contained

President Obama appears poised to take executive action that would legalize as many as 5 million illegal immigrant parents of U.S.-born children, a prospect that riles local immigration critics and adds a new dimension to concern about swelling immigrant populations in states like Massachusetts eyed as hosting sites for thousands of children who crossed the border unaccompanied. The Associated Press reported yesterday White House officials are laying the groundwork for an executive order that would automatically legalize roughly 5 million of an estimated 11 million people who have entered the country without legal authorization or overstayed their visas.

When The Times of Israel’s Avi Issacharoff first reported the content of John Kerry’s ceasefire proposal on Friday afternoon, I wondered if something had gotten lost in translation. It seemed inconceivable that the American secretary of state would have drafted an initiative that, as a priority, did not require the dismantling of Hamas’s rocket arsenal and network of tunnels dug under the Israeli border. Yet the reported text did not address these issues at all, nor call for the demilitarization of Gaza. It seemed inconceivable that the secretary’s initiative would specify the need to address Hamas’s demands for a lifting of

Former presidential nominee Mitt Romney would win the popular vote if a rematch of the 2012 election against President Obama were held today, a CNN/ORC poll has revealed. According to the poll, if the 2012 election were held again today, Romney would receive 53% of the popular vote, and Mr. Obama would receive 44%, CNN reported. Obama beat Romney 51%-47% in the actual election. The poll said, however, that the former Massachusetts governor would lose against Hillary Clinton by double digits in a hypothetical election. Mrs. Clinton would earn 55% of the vote, with Mr. Romney at 42%.

Illegal immigrants plan to picket the White House Monday afternoon, calling on fellow immigrant-rights advocacy groups to refuse to meet with the Obama administration until President Obama specifically includes illegal immigrants in any future meetings. “We are among the millions of people who will either benefit or be harmed by the decisions the President makes, and we are here to represent ourselves in any future negotiations,” said Rosi Carrasco, one of organizers, in a statement announcing the action. A leading drug policy researcher, David Murray, has a must-read piece up at the Hudson Institute website, "Comparing Marijuana and Alcohol: Seriously." Murray´s article is a devastating deconstruction of claims that marijuana is relatively safe, or at least safer than alcohol. And, as he points out, it thereby undermines much of the basis of the New York Times´s blithely irresponsible editorial endorsement of marijuana legalization. Read Murray´s whole piece. Here are highlights: It’s a remarkable weekend when one finds the Grey Lady arguing for state’s rights, and worrying huffily about arbitrary Presidential powers. The Catholic Church—through the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Migration—both paved the road for Barack Hussein Obama’s ultimate takeover of Free West society and continues to actively enable the Fundamental Transformation of America by sinking the US in a tsunami of illegal aliens. In coming to Obama’s aid in erasing forever America’s borders, the bishops sold the USA out, including its Catholics, for the proverbial 30 pieces of silver. In biblical terms, Obama and the Catholic bishops—who both birthed his progress to the seat of power and back him on his Fundamental Transformation mission—are in in league with the devil.

President Barack Obama is practically weepy at the thought of his daughter Malia going off to college, a milestone many months away that is already on his mind. Malia barely reached up to her father´s shoulders when they moved to the White House nearly six years ago with her mother, little sister and grandmother. At 16, she stands nearly as tall as her 6-foot-1 dad and is visiting college campuses in preparation for that bittersweet day in the fall of 2016 when she trades her White House bedroom for a dorm. She has been seen touring the University of California
