Get ready for Saturday night’s
big, bright ‘supermoon’

NEW YORK — The full moon on Saturday will appear to be unusually big. In fact, it will be a “supermoon.” That’s the nickname for full moons that happen when our celestial neighbor is relatively close to Earth. That distance varies because the moon follows an elliptical orbit. When it’s close and full, it appears bigger and brighter than normal, although in fact the difference can be hard to detect. If you see Saturday’s moon close to the horizon it may seem huge, but that’s just an illusion caused by its position in the sky. Two other full moons this

In the current issue of National Review, I have a piece called “Take Two: D’Souza films again.” As you can gather, it’s about Dinesh D’Souza’s second film, now playing in theaters. It’s called “America: Imagine the World without Her.” There is a companion book to it: America: Imagine a World without Her. There is a slight difference in those two titles. Did you notice? The film says “the World” and the book says “a World.” Curious. Dinesh’s first movie was 2016: Obama’s America, which appeared right in the middle of the 2012 presidential election campaign. It has been said many times that Hillary Clinton’s lack of warmth and empathy cost her the 2008 Democratic candidacy. A friend of mine who is a respected editor told me that she finds her smug and cold. Before our meeting, I watched her appearance on BBC One’s magazine programme The One Show, a televisual happening that was described as “Einstein doing Play School”. I’d go one step further: it was Einstein loving every second of being on Play School. Everything Clinton was asked she responded to with charm, apparent sincerity and, most surprising of all, firecracker wit. When asked

Here’s something you don’t see every Sunday: John McCain on a television program. The senator talked to Media Buzz’s Howard Kurtz about Jon Stewart and the Iraq War, criticizing the media for painting America’s withdrawal from Iraq without a residual force as mandated by the Iraqis, which McCain said was “just wrong.” Kurtz asked if Stewart was fair to Republicans. “No,” McCain said. “But, you know, it doesn’t matter really. He’s a comedian.” “He’s also a social critical who has a sizable following among young people,” Kurtz said. (This is a longstanding point of contention with Kurtz.) “He’s a late

President Obama will announce on Monday that 60 of the nation’s largest school districts are joining his initiative to improve the educational futures of young African-American and Hispanic boys, beginning in preschool and extending through high school graduation. The districts, which represent about 40 percent of all African-American and Hispanic boys living below the poverty line, have committed to expand quality preschool access; track data on black and Hispanic boys so educators can intervene as soon as signs of struggle emerge; increase the number of boys of color who take gifted, honors or Advanced Placement courses and exams; work to

Gaza City- Hamas claimed it captured an Israeli soldier Sunday on the deadliest day yet in the battle between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza. The solider was taken during an early morning operation, according to Abu Obeida, a spokesman for Hamas´ military wing, al-Qassam Brigades. He provided the supposed soldier´s name and ID. "He is a prisoner, and if Zionists lie about the dead and wounded, then the fate of this soldier is their responsibility," the spokesman said. Gunfire and cheers erupted in Gaza in apparent celebration of the soldier´s capture, according to CNN reporters on the ground.

On Saturday, Rep. Speaking at the National Council of La Raza conference in Los Angeles, Gutierrez said that Obama assured him during a White House meeting with Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus last week that he would be as "generous and broad" as he can to "stop the deportation of our people each and every day." "You gave us a down payment when you freed 600,000 DREAMers from deportation,"

Buzz Aldrin followed about 20 minutes later. Most people assume that NASA always planned for Armstrong to be the first person to step out onto the moon because of his rank. The year was 1969. The turbulent time in America saw troops fighting in Vietnam, and a nation dealing with the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, killed in 1963, and Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., both murdered in 1968. Then came that one small step. At a political event in Wilmington, Delaware, on Thursday, President Obama devoted only 40 seconds to the shooting down of the Malaysian airline, his first statement to the world following the news. His emotionless reference to the attack as ‘a terrible tragedy’ seemed disconnected from the horrific moment, particularly as he immediately reverted to script to praise his administration and criticise Republicans. It was a far cry from President Reagan’s 1983 fierce denunciation of the Soviet shooting down of a Korean airliner as a ‘crime against humanity’. But it only confirmed the chaos into which US foreign policy has descended since the summer

LOS ANGELES — Actor James Garner, whose whimsical style in the 1950s TV Western “Maverick” led to a stellar career in TV and films such as “The Rockford Files” and his Oscar-nominated “Murphy’s Romance,” has died, police said. He was 86. He was found dead of natural causes at his home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles Saturday evening, Los Angeles police officer Alonzo Iniquez said early Sunday. Police responded to a call around 8 p.m. PDT and confirmed Garner’s identity from family members, Iniquez told The Associated Press. There was no immediate word on a more specific cause of death. Garner had suffered a stroke in May 2008, just weeks after his 80th birthday.
