Polar vortex to hit US with
midsummer cold blast

New York Post, by Chris Perez

It’s the revenge of the polar vortex! A frigid cold air system will be moving through the eastern United States next week, leading to intense weather conditions reminiscent of last year’s dreaded polar vortex. The approaching weather system is expected to bring overwhelmingly below-average temperatures to parts of the northern and northeastern US next week, beginning Monday or Tuesday, according to the Washington Post. States located in areas such as the High Plains, the central US and the Great Lakes could see temperatures 20 to 30 degrees below their current averages. That means people normally dealing with scorching temperatures sometimes

Comments:
I just checked my "weather bug" for 10-day forecast. No vortex temps showing up during that time. It´s barely reached the high 80s so far this summer.

It´s 98 here today. The sun feels good after a morning in air conditioned hibernation, but a polar vortex would be a nice change.

Low 80s here by midweek, unheard of for July in Middle Tennessee. Usually 90+ like it will this weekend.
I welcome the moderate temps.

Gov. Cuomo won his Democratic primary fight Tuesday — but not without getting bruised by little-known leftist insurgent Zephyr Teachout’s surprisingly strong showing. With 94 percent of the ballots counted, Teachout had 34.6 percent of the vote to Cuomo’s 61.7 percent — even though she ran a shoestring campaign against a well-financed incumbent who outspent her 10 to 1. And a third candidate on the ballot, Randy Credico, got about 3.7 percent — meaning that almost 40 percent of Dem voters cast their ballots against the gov. There is a mystery about Congressman Paul Ryan’s new and very good book, “The Way Forward: Renewing the American Dream.” Perhaps there are several mysteries. Mr. Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee and Mitt Romney’s vice presidential running mate, begins by writing at length about the place he has lived all his life, Janesville, a town of 60,000 in southern Wisconsin. It is rural, but it also has industry. Moreover it has Ryans. Sixty-seven of his cousins live nearby. The Ryans have lived there for generations along with other Catholics, Protestants, and presumably citizens oblivious to religion’s call.

Imagine a sex scandal centered on a small area, involving decades of abuse, with hundreds of children raped, assaulted and prostituted. Authorities suspected or knew of the crimes but did nothing, preferring to protect the abusers than aid their victims or see justice done. If that city were in, say, Ireland, and the abusers Catholic priests, the U.S. networks would report it immediately and continuously. And rightly so. But move that city to northern England, and make the perpetrators Muslim men? Don’t look to ABC, NBC or CBS for details.

But when you consider the fact that there are an estimated 500 British passport holders currently fighting for the IS, along with over 100 Americans and an untold number of Europeans fighting alongside the terrorists, the subject of border security takes on a greater urgency. The fact that this could happen, as O’Keefe films it, is a grave concern.

As we suspected, President Obama tried in his Wednesday-night speech to make it sound like he was doing something new when he, in fact, he is not. Moreover, in describing his response, he made plain that he doesn’t take the threat to the homeland seriously. For a threat his advisers say is greater than that posed by al-Qaeda after 2001, he proposed measures suitable for Yemen and Somalia. No, really — that’s the plan. Rarely has a president faced a greater challenge in establishing his credibility for a new foreign-policy move than Barack Obama did in his nationally televised speech tonight. A CNN poll earlier this week found that just 30 percent of voters thought Obama had presented a clear plan for fighting the Islamic State. President Obama just announced that he is bringing a counter-terrorism strategy to an insurgency fight. He was at pains to repeat the phrase “counter-terror” four times in a short speech. Noting that ISIL is not a state (partly because the international community thankfully does not recognize it), he declared, “ISIL is a terrorist organization, pure and simple. And it has no vision other than the slaughter of all who stand in its way.” Neither of those sentences, unfortunately, is true. Throughout his presidency, President Obama has emphasized one point while talking about Islamist extremists: They are not practicing Islam, he has said, they are perverting it. He took that a step further Wednesday night. While announcing that he´s expanding the campaign against the Islamic State extremist group into Syria, Obama said flatly that this group, which is trying to install a caliphate in the Middle East, "is not Islamic."
