Congress backpedals on ethics
USA Today, by Editorial

Original Article

Remember those civics courses that taught "how a bill becomes a law"? Well, they need a follow-up called "how a law becomes a sham." The lesson would focus on the ways in which Congress — usually amid an uproar over some particularly sleazy activity — bars behavior that most people would know is wrong, law or no law. Later, when nobody´s looking, Congress backtracks. The latest example is the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act, which explicitly bars lawmakers and staffers from spreading or trading on inside information. The law passed in 2012 only after CBS´ 60 Minutes aired

We really didn´t need anymore proof that these weasels will always take care of themselves before (if ever) their constituents. The list of those who have abused is comprised of both Republicans and Democrats.

The foundation of real ethics is moral or natural law. Neither of these foundational concepts ever change.

Afte the stock law was passed that was amended in the favor of Congress. Only a few handfuls of honest, moral lawmakers are in those hollowed halls of crime.

NEW YORK - Protecting the infrastructure of American cities from the effects of climate change is rising on the agenda of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, according to a top agency official. "Increasingly, we´ve moved not only from a security focus to a resiliency focus," said Caitlin Durkovich, assistant secretary for infrastructure protection at Homeland Security, an agency better known for its fight to curb terrorist threats. Durkovich spoke Thursday on a panel at the Rising Seas Summit, a three-day conference organized by the U.S.-based Association of Climate Change Officers to discuss tools and ideas on building resiliency, particularly against rising

Shark meat is in and chicken fingers are out for some schools abiding by First Lady Michelle Obama’s lunch rules. The U.S. Department of Agriculture highlighted an elementary school in Maine on Wednesday that is taking the standards from the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act to a different level. “The cafeteria is the biggest classroom in the school where students are taught to make healthy choices for themselves beginning in kindergarten,” wrote Linda Mailhot, the head cook at Mount Desert Elementary School in Northeast Harbor Maine, in a blog post for the USDA. A sniffling Attorney General Eric Holder fought back tears on Thursday as President Barack Obama praised his legal legacy and wished him well outside the federal govermnent. Although Holder will leave the Justice Department under a cloudbank of controversies, the president gushed in a stirring political eulogy that ´he believes, as I do, that justice is not just an abstract theory. It’s a living and breathing principle.´ Holder told a televised White House gathering that he has ´very mixed emotions´ about his departure, which is on hold until his replacement can win Senate confirmation. But he had heartfelt words for

UNITED NATIONS — President Barack Obama is carving out a wide swath the Pacific Ocean for an expanded marine preserve, putting the waters off-limits to drilling and most fishing in a bid to protect fragile underwater life. The revamped expanded Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument will cover 490,000 square miles - an area roughly three times the size of California - and will become the largest marine preserve in the world. Millions of seabirds, sea turtles and marine mammals live in the bio-rich expanse included by the new monument, which will also add new protections for more than 130

This is what we’ve come to: One of Mitt Romney’s former ad men has launched an entire campaign around the idea that “Republicans Are People, Too.” And, unsurprisingly, some liberals are amused. MSNBC’s Steve Benen derided the message as “overly defensive” and wrote: “If you have to remind the public that Republicans ‘are people’ and ‘have emotions,’ then you’re implicitly suggesting that Republicans’ basic humanity is, at least for some, in doubt.” Well…sometimes, yeah, it is in doubt. Okay, sure, no one’s going around saying conservatives and Republicans aren’t human. But there’s often a host of negative assumptions and stereotyping, fueled by our liberal

He´s previously been spotted as a possible successor to Holder. He previously served as the Justice Department´s head of Civil Rights. Heck, Obama likes his so much, he plagiarizes his speeches. And this is the last year of his tenure as governor. Back in 2012, Patrick said he wouldn´t leave office early to serve as AG, but that

Eric Holder Jr., the nation´s first black U.S. attorney general, is preparing to announce his resignation Thursday after a tumultuous tenure marked by civil rights advances, national security threats, reforms to the criminal justice system and five and a half years of fights with Republicans in Congress. Two sources familiar with the decision tell NPR that Holder, 63, intends to leave the Justice Department as soon as his successor is confirmed, a process that could run through 2014 and even into next year. A former U.S. government official says Holder has been increasingly "adamant" about his desire to leave soon

President Obama on Wednesday delivered a speech at the United Nations filled with his usual soaring rhetoric of global collectivism and the importance of “international norms.” But the president also displayed a shocking naivete about global affairs, religion, Islam — a Pollyannaish interpretation on the state of the world and America’s role in it. Although Mr. Obama won a Nobel Peace Prize just eight months into office, the president made his annual trip to the ineffectual world council to deliver a call to war. “Ladies and gentlemen, we come together at a crossroads between war and peace,

The View is a television show that, apparently, a lot of women watch. Currently, Rosie O’Donnell, who was once famous for something–I have no idea what–is one of the hosts. Still, many women watch. So this video of The View’s women grappling with the Obama administration’s response to ISIS terrorism is noteworthy. I want to highlight O’Donnell’s contribution near the end: We are bombing Syria because Syria has so much oil, so there is a “financial incentive.” What the Hell is this supposed to mean? Why are liberals obsessed with oil? And what, exactly, is the “financial incentive?” Here is the

Normally, no one would care that in a recent Atlantic essay — “Why I Hope to Die at 75” — 57-year-old Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel argued that living to be 75 years old was long enough for anyone. After 75, Emanuel suggests, “We are no longer remembered as vibrant and engaged but as feeble, ineffectual, even pathetic.” But Emanuel is no garden-variety crackpot. Nor is he a wannabe science-fiction writer dreaming of a centrally planned planet of robust youthful humanoids. If there is one thing Chelsea Clinton is most worried about, it may be that her soon-to-be child will grow up in a world without elephants. Standing alongside her mother, Hillary Clinton, at the Clinton Global Initiative this afternoon, the very-pregnant former first daughter warned the plight of African elephants, killed for their ivory tusks, is an “existential” one, and said that if the current poaching rates continue, elephants could be few and far between within the next decade. If so, this means Chelsea Clinton’s favorite animal could be something her child would never know. “The child Marc and I
