How 160,000 intercepted communications
led to our latest NSA story

Washington Post, by Barton Gellman

Original Article

Posted By:Drive, 7/11/2014 3:08:42 PM

Last weekend, The Washington Post published a story I wrote with Julie Tate and Ashkan Soltani about National Security Agency surveillance that sweeps in the conversations of people who are not foreign “targets.” The story, based on 160,000 intercepted communications I received from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, has provoked a lot of questions, objections, and, I think, misunderstandings. Some readers and commentators have described the story as an overheated statement of the obvious: that surveillance of one person includes the content of people who talk to him. Others have said The Washington Post, not the government, invaded the privacy

Isil´s Western converts are not motivated

The devil makes work for idle hands – and it’s striking how much support Jihad finds among idle Westerners. According to one poll, more people in France support Isil than people in Gaza do and, according to the Daily Beast, identification with fundamentalism is fuelled by middle-class ennui. In a fascinating portrait of Aqsa Mahmood, a public school girl who is believed to have volunteered to become a Jihad bride, journalist Jamie Dettmer makes the following observation: Mahmood is one of at least 50 British women and girls who are thought by security experts to have joined ISIS in Syria,

NATO Approves New Force

NEWPORT, Wales -- Seeking to counter Russian aggression, NATO leaders approved plans Friday to dispatch several thousand troops in Eastern Europe that could quickly mobilize if an alliance country in the region comes under attack. NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the new unit would send a clear message to potential aggressors. "Should you even think of attacking one ally, you will be facing the whole alliance," he declared as a two-day NATO summit in southern Wales drew to a close. The agreement on the rapid response force is the cornerstone of discussions at the summit on how to combat Russia´s provocations in

Syria May Have Hidden

New York Times, by Rick Gladstone    Original Article

The United States expressed concern on Thursday that Syria’s government might be harboring undeclared chemical weapons, hidden from the internationally led operation to purge them over the past year, and that Islamist militant extremists now ensconced in that country could possibly seize control of them. The assertions by Samantha Power, the United States ambassador to the United Nations and current president of the Security Council, were made after the Council received a private briefing on the Syria chemical weapons disarmament effort from Sigrid Kaag, the United Nations official appointed last year to coordinate it. Under Ms. Kaag, 96 percent of Syria’s

The world needs a mighty U.S. military

Russia invades, China bullies, Iran spins centrifuges, the Islamic State (a terrorist threat “beyond anything that we’ve seen,” according to the defense secretary ) threatens — and Washington slashes the military. Reason stares. Several arguments are advanced to justify the decimation of our defense. All of them are wrong. The president asserts that we must move to “a new order that’s based on a different set of principles, that’s based on a sense of common humanity.” The old order, he is saying, where America’s disproportionate strength holds tyrants in check and preserves the sovereignty of nations, is to be replaced.

Just How Confidential IS Mike Brown’s

A self-described “avid reader” of Legal Insurrection has asked us to address the issue of the confidentiality of Mike Brown’s juvenile criminal record (if any), and whether these are likely to be released to the press and public. Disclaimer: Neither I nor Legal Insurrection knows with certainty whether Mike Brown even has a juvenile criminal record, nor (if such exists) what offenses might have been charged or adjudicated in such a record. It appears that early internet claims that Brown’s juvenile record contained a serious felony were in error. The collected information released by various government actors (or refused to

The son of daredevil billionaire Richard Branson had to be rescued by helicopter from the top of the Matterhorn after a death-defying adventure in the Swiss Alps went awry. Sam Branson scaled the 14,692-foot-high peak Wednesday as part of the Virgin Strive fund-raising challenge, but he became disoriented as he started his descent. His father, founder of the Virgin Group, witnessed the terrifying event. “By the time Sam completed the challenge and reached the summit, he hardly knew where he was,” Richard Branson said on his Web site. “He had a blinding headache and could only briefly look up and take in the

After President Obama admitted on Thursday that he had "no strategy" for dealing with the ISIS terrorist network, on Wednesday, the network morning shows rushed to portray the aimless commander-in-chief as a tough-talking leader ready to "destroy" the radical killers. At the top of ABC´s Good Morning America, co-host George Stephanopoulos hyped: "President Obama´s tough words to the ISIS terrorists who executed American journalist Steven Sotloff." In the report that followed, correspondent Brian Ross proclaimed: "President Obama vowed that ISIS will pay the price for the murder of a second American journalist. He died peacefully at Sloan Kettering,” and was “surrounded by his loving family,” said the attorney, Martin Flumenbaum. Funeral arrangements for the 48-year-old will be private, he said. Andrew’s brother, Mark Madoff, committed suicide in 2010, on the second anniversary of their father’s arrest. Andrew had battled back lymphoma before, but told People magazine last year that the stress and shame he dealt stemming from his father’s notoriety caused the cancer to

If the rapper known as L Jinny is also the executioner known as Jihadi John, should anyone be surprised? In the past two weeks, a knife-wielding, faceless man in black has become perhaps the most notorious Briton on the planet, the protagonist of two real-life snuff movies as he kills James Foley and Steven Sotloff, American journalists. His aggressive, grandstanding words have been repeated across our airwaves, their Britishness only too obvious, threatening President Obama and other world leaders like a street-corner hoodlum. He does so in the name of his God. L Jinny, aka Abdel-Majed Abdel-Bary, is the man whose name

The 2014 cycle has been an interesting one so far. For example, Republican Senate candidates are normally the ones who end up embarrassing themselves, but not this time. That’s a shocking development in and of itself. Also shocking is the degree to which Democratic Senate candidates and their allies have resorted to absurd attack ads this far out from election day. Senator Mark Begich (D., Alaska) was recently forced to pull an inflammatory ad falsely linking his GOP opponent, former state Attorney General Dan Sullivan, to a gruesome murder, after the victims’ family expressed outrage at not being consulted and accused

A selfie-obsessed cop is under fire after appearing to snap photos of himself moments before a suicidal man behind him leapt to his death. A shocking photo taken on Istanbul´s Bosphorus Bridge Monday morning shows the uniformed officer appearing to narcissistically pose for the camera while the troubled man dangerously hangs over the edge. The officer was one of several "highly trained negotiators" dispatched to help the distressed man, said a police spokesman. But seconds after the officer raised the device to his face, the victim, identified as 35-year-old Sadrettin Saskin, let go and plunged nearly 600-feet to his death,

No really. That’s what he said. Secretary of State John Kerry today deployed logic to the effect of, God “created the heavens and the earth” and therefore God wants him to stop global warming and especially to do this to help Muslim countries, which are particularly imperiled. I really don’t know. I just hope Muslims and God appreciate everything he’s doing for them. And if only ISIS could get this message. If only they could get themselves on the State Department press release list, they’d at least read what Kerry has to say, and how he wants to make the desert less

Barack Obama stands apart from other modern American Presidents in many ways. (snip)the widespread view that he is the coolest President ever. This supernal coolness is not new. In his autobiography, Dreams From My Father, the President wrote that in his teenage years “I tried my best to be cool at all times” (p. 82). However, leaving aside the contradiction inherent in trying to be cool, it is possible that Barack Obama’s teenage experiences may have left him psychologically, and perhaps even neurologically, incapable of performing fundamental tasks of his current position. Much of the appeal of coolness is its

The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee on Friday said new allegations that U.S. commandos were ordered to “stand down” during the 2012 attack in Benghazi, Libya, aren’t supported by findings from House and Senate investigators. Five commandos who survived the Benghazi attack, which claimed the lives of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, made the allegation in a new book, accusing the CIA station chief of delaying a rescue mission. Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.) said lawmakers never came across evidence indicating the station chief had told his team to “stand down” and abort a

Last Wednesday, at a ceremony to appoint Texas lawyer Shaarik Zafar to be special representative to Muslim communities, Secretary of State John Kerry said it was the United States’ Biblical “responsibility” to “confront climate change,” including to protect “vulnerable Muslim majority counties.” Kerry said Scripture, in particular the Book of Genesis, makes clear it is our “duty” to protect the planet and we should look at Muslim countries “with a sense of stewardship of earth,” adding, “That responsibility comes from God.” And here you thought all along that “Uncle Joe” was the resident crazy in the Obama administration.

The Internal Revenue Service has lost emails from five more employees who are part of congressional probes into the treatment of conservative groups that applied for tax-exempt status, the tax service disclosed Friday. The tax agency said in June that it could not locate an untold number of emails to and from Lois Lerner, who headed the IRS division that processes applications for tax-exempt status. The revelation set off a new round of investigations and congressional hearings. On Friday, the IRS issued a report to Congress saying the agency also lost emails from five other employees related to the probe,

There is reportedly better than a 50-50 chance that former Florida Governor Jeb Bush will run for president. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Bush´s inner circle of "advisers have been quietly spreading the word that they should avoid committing to other possible presidential candidates until he decides on his own course after the November election" and have been actively dismissing "speculation that the former Florida governor has ruled out a 2016 run."
