Pat Roberts Claims His Children Attended

Fending off persistent questions about his residency status, Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) noted in a radio interview last week that “my kids went to school” in Dodge City, Kansas, as a means of demonstrating his ties to the state he represents roughly 1,400 miles away in Washington, D.C. But a close inspection of that claim shows his children only attended school there for about three months, and attended and graduated from high school in Alexandria, Virginia, although they later attended college in Kansas. “We have declared Dodge [City] our residency; our kids went to school there. It is time to replace the ancients with fresh blood that will fight for our constitution. Sue them in the courts, impeach them in Congress, defund them in the House, fight them on the beaches, in the fields, building to building.

Changing Border Bill and Re-Voting Before
Saturday Would Violate Boehner´s Own Rule

If the House makes any changes whatsoever to the immigration bill that blew up and died before Speaker John Boehner tried to bring it back to life—and then votes on those changes on Thursday evening or on Friday—it would be a violation of Boehner’s own 72-hour rule. “I proposed a 72-hour minimum time for members to read bills,” Boehner said as House minority leader on May 14, 2009. “I think it’s important that members do have a chance.” "Americans not only expect lawmakers to know what they’re voting on, they deserve to know what’s in these bills as well,” Boehner added on

On Thursday, the House GOP imploded over its border bill to solve the child-migrant crisis, pulling the legislation from the floor for lack of votes. And there, standing among the legislative wreckage, stood the proud senator from Texas, Ted Cruz. Not literally, of course. But the tea party Texan is once again smack in the middle of a House Republican debacle. With a reach as wide as his state, the freshman senator has his arm around conservative House Republicans. He has been lobbying them over Chick-fil-A and pizza to change the House bill “to end Obama’s amnesty.” By that he

Rep. Chris Van Hollen slammed House Republicans on Thursday, saying members now have to check with “Speaker Cruz” to get any legislation passed. “It was Senator Cruz calling the shots, and that’s why people around here are calling him ‘Speaker Cruz’ today,” the Maryland Democrat said to MSNBC’s Alex Wagner. “It means when Speaker Boehner says he’s going to get something done from now on, he’d better be checking with Senator Cruz to see if he’s gonna get the votes because clearly the new leadership team isn’t up to the task.” Van Hollen’s jab came as the GOP fought over a

Harry Enten, an analyst with FiveThirtyEight, a political website owned by ESPN, claims he can prove with charts and graphs that Republican Florida Governor Rick Scott and his Democratic challenger Charlie Crist are the most unpopular pair to face each other in a governor’s race for at least the last decade. Without even consulting the charts and graphs, few Floridians outside of Scott’s or Crist’s camp would argue with Enten. Both candidates’ favorable/unfavorable ratings are below water. Scott’s ratings have been in the unfavorable range for almost the entire three-years-plus he has been governor. He has mostly done what he ran

There has been a lot said in recent years by Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, and other conservatives about crony capitalism – or if you prefer, crony socialism, crony government, corporatism – or just plain cronyism. Whatever you call it, this conversation is increasingly vital as government grows and continues to pervert markets by picking winners and losers as a way to obtain wealth for powerful lawmakers and their fund-raisers and friends. This rampant cronyism is one of the most insidious outgrowths of a government gone wild, and has become a swirling vortex of self sustaining and systemic corruption. Thus, the focus

The trend creating “career politicians” has been growing for decades, and it has surely contributed to the entrenchment of power in D.C. and its separation from the will of the American people. With President Obama vowing to ignore Congress and move on his own on immigration, potentially providing unilateral amnesty to as many as six million illegal aliens, criticism is mounting from the right over Speaker John Boehner´s failure to engage more directly on Obama´s threat. Now Rep. President Obama gave a press conference this evening. He started a little over an hour late without explanation. Reporters stuck to asking questions that they evidently knew Obama would be comfortable answering. None of them asked him about any of his administration scandals. ABC’s Jon Karl, usually a tough questioner of Obama and his spokesmen, asked a rambling question that played right into the Democrats’ “economic patriotism” canard. Despite the fact that the president showed a passionless, bloodless, disinterested face to the world, he still managed to do some damage. Chris Jansing of CNN asked Obama if the sanctions against Russia are working.

Dozens of government watchdogs are sounding the alarm that the Obama administration is stonewalling them, in what is being described as an unprecedented challenge to the agencies they´re supposed to oversee. Forty-seven of the government´s 73 independent watchdogs known as inspectors general voiced their complaints in a letter to congressional leaders this week. They accused several major agencies -- the Justice Department, the Peace Corps and the chemical safety board -- of imposing "serious limitations on access to records." Concern about rising wealth and income inequality has generated all kinds of solutions, often focused on improving the lot of the people at the bottom with measures such as minimum wages. But instead of putting a floor on what people get, why not put a ceiling on how much they get to keep?(Snip)Suppose that people, after paying ordinary income taxes, would be allowed to keep up to, say, $500,000 of their income, then would be obliged to give away the rest to the charities of their choice or, if they like, to a charity of their own design and creation.
