The polar vortex is BACK, but
this time it won´t ruin your life:
Scorching summer temperatures to dip
10-30 degrees as polar air moves in

A nasty polar vortex that wreaked havoc on the east coast in January is making a shock return next week--though don´t pull out your puffer coat just yet. Unseasonably chilly air is headed for parts of the northern and northeastern U.S. where residents have been sweltering in 90 degree weather this week--as one would expect in July. Thankfully, families won´t be plunged into the despair they endured during January´s brutally cold weather pattern. [Snip] According to the Washington Post, a deep pool of cool air from Alaska and Canada will plunge into the Great Lakes early next week. From there

Comments:
Oh I hope it reaches down here! We´ve had days in the 90s, with some heat indices over 100, for many weeks. We really could use a bit of a break. Lots of chores to do on the yard, too hot to do them.

Barack Obama today authorised US airstrikes in northern Iraq to defend hundreds of thousands of non-Muslims being hunted down and slaughtered by ISIS hoards as he declared: ´America is coming to help.´ His dramatic call to arms came as the chaos engulfing Iraq escalated rapidly last night with a re-energised Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant storming towns in the north, executing villagers and chasing thousands from their homes into the desert. Already dozens of Yazidis--who ISIS have denounced as devil-worshippers because of their ancient set of beliefs which predate Christianity and Islam--have been murdered as the extremist fighters overran the

Israel says it has resumed air strikes in Gaza after Palestinian militants fired rockets following the end of a three-day truce on Friday morning. The Israeli army called the renewed rocket attacks "unacceptable, intolerable and short-sighted". Palestinian militant group Hamas, which controls Gaza, earlier rejected any extension of the truce, saying Israel had failed to meet its demands. [Snip] Israel´s government says 64 soldiers have been killed, along with two Israeli civilians and a Thai national. It also claims that about 900 Palestinian militants have died in the violence. The UK Independence Party has won a local council by-election in the southern English town of Worthing, defeating the incumbent Liberal Democrats. [Snip] Last night, the party finished a poor third in the Castle ward, with just 15.7 percent of the vote, behind the Conservatives, who won 31.5 percent and UKIP on 36.9. The victory gives UKIP their second councillor in Worthing after Susan Jellis won the seat of Durrington in May´s local elections. A former Liberal Democrat in mayor also defected to the party in December last year before standing down.

A 10 pence a day “wonderdrug” likened to aspirin could extend millions of lives by up to three years, new research suggests. A study of more than 180,000 people indicates that the medicine which is widely prescribed for type 2 diabetes could increase life expectancy in those without the disease. Diabetes has been shown to reduce the average lifespan by about eight years. But the UK study, led by Cardiff University, found that when patients with diabetes were given the drug metformin they in fact lived longer than others without the condition. The trials found that when other factors were taken into account, those

Barack Obama´s decision to act on Iraq

Barack Obama has been a reluctant warrior during his time as US president, but has taken a bold step, underwriting efforts to find a political solution in Iraq with hard American power. [Snip] Ostensibly the authorisation to use force covers two narrow objectives: to break the siege of the Yazidi minority in the mountains south of Sinjar and to protect American personnel operating in the Kurdish stronghold of Erbil. But listen carefully to senior administration officials, and it is clear that the mandate extends far beyond these two goals to encompass the broader strategic objective of preventing Islamic State from

Israel says it has resumed strikes on Gaza in response to rocket fire, after end of 3-day truce. [Snip] On Thursday, Hamas held its first public rally since a cease-fire with Israel, with an official vowing the militant group would never give up its arms and will continue to fight until the Gaza Strip blockade is lifted. The uncompromising rhetoric of the official, Mushir al-Masri, came as Hamas and other Palestinian factions were in Cairo indirectly negotiating with Israel for a permanent ceasefire and steps to lift the seven-year-old blockade of the coastal strip by Israel and Egypt.

President Obama gave a press conference this evening. He started a little over an hour late without explanation. Reporters stuck to asking questions that they evidently knew Obama would be comfortable answering. None of them asked him about any of his administration scandals. ABC’s Jon Karl, usually a tough questioner of Obama and his spokesmen, asked a rambling question that played right into the Democrats’ “economic patriotism” canard. Despite the fact that the president showed a passionless, bloodless, disinterested face to the world, he still managed to do some damage. Chris Jansing of CNN asked Obama if the sanctions against Russia are working.

And the men can’t complain because you’re outnumbered today,” she said as the audience laughed. Obama cited Laura Bush as a First Lady that acted with a level of

Former Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton warned of the perilous new age our world has sunken into under President Obama’s leadership. Bolton appeared on Fox Business Wednesday and hammered the president for his failure to effectively lead. “The world is descended into chaos,” Bolton said. He referenced a new WSJ/NBC poll that found Americans are panicking over the uncertain, dismal state of our country. The poll found that only 36 percent of Americans surveyed approve of President Obama’s foreign policy. The former Ambassador warned that if America cowers from a position of power, “you are going to have

The disgraceful video above shows how racist Russian students projected a laser image of Barack Obama eating a banana on to the US Embassy in Moscow. On 4th August, the so-called show began with a message to the US President pretending to wish him a happy 53rd birthday. A likeness of Obama with a party hat on his head then appeared, although the mouth area was made to look like that of a monkey - and a banana repeatedly moved into the mouth. The series of projections are then repeated several times. A group calling itself The Moscow Student Initiative

The GOP has shown time and again that it is incapable of passing any meaningful immigration reform. But give them tens of thousands of Central American children fleeing violence, and they fly into action. Turns out, what animates today´s Republicans is deporting kids. So inspired were they, the GOP-controlled House of Representatives stayed late Friday to distort and demagogue a humanitarian crisis, passing a reprehensible bill that the Republicans claim addresses the border crisis. Dozens of government watchdogs are sounding the alarm that the Obama administration is stonewalling them, in what is being described as an unprecedented challenge to the agencies they´re supposed to oversee. Forty-seven of the government´s 73 independent watchdogs known as inspectors general voiced their complaints in a letter to congressional leaders this week. They accused several major agencies -- the Justice Department, the Peace Corps and the chemical safety board -- of imposing "serious limitations on access to records." The inspectors general are now appealing to Congress to help them do their jobs uncovering waste, fraud, and mismanagement.

Chantal Biya has single-handedly made mullet the new magnificent. Biya’s bouffant is a beauty school master’s thesis in contradictions. Somehow her hair manages to be short and long, rebellious yet elegant, unruly but controlled. Concern about rising wealth and income inequality has generated all kinds of solutions, often focused on improving the lot of the people at the bottom with measures such as minimum wages. But instead of putting a floor on what people get, why not put a ceiling on how much they get to keep?(Snip)Suppose that people, after paying ordinary income taxes, would be allowed to keep up to, say, $500,000 of their income, then would be obliged to give away the rest to the charities of their choice or, if they like, to a charity of their own design and creation.
