STARKE – Florida prison officials today executed a man convicted of the 1994 rape and slaying of an 11-year-old girl. It was the state’s sixth execution this year. Eddie Wayne Davis was executed by injection at Florida State Prison at 6:43 p.m. Davis declined to say any final words before his sentence was carried out. Executioners put the IV needle into Davis’ left arm around 6:30 p.m. Davis began muttering to himself after the process began, but witnesses in the viewing area couldn’t hear what he was saying because the speakers had been turned off. Davis’ chest heaved up and

Only 19 years later? What was the big hurry?

"After the rape, Davis took Waters to a nearby Moose Lodge, where he beat her and suffocated her with a piece of plastic before dumping her body in a trash can."

Debate is raging in the expert community over what ISIS is: a state, transnational ideology, or just a way of life? (Snip) Who wants a movement? Suppose names like “caliphate” and “country” and “movement” are merely terms meant to befuddle pedantic Westerners; they are fancy words thrown in for the left wing liberals because they can understand nothing except in terms of their own provincial tropes. What if all these high flown appellations are all the same to the boys, who are really out for some six-shootin’, virgin-bustin’, kaffir-killin’ fun. Like it was in Mohammed’s time and always shall be.

The New York Times notices the smoke collecting on the ceiling of the auditorium of the world and wonders whether there might be something to worry about. (Snip) Like Sherlock on the trail, he suggests a common cause links them all. But we are advised not to worry, because the president is hot on the trail of the mystery; trying to identify the factor that connects all these catastrophes. Patience is advised, it is not elementary, my dear Watsons. The world is a complex place which only the the very smartest can understand. Little wonder then that in recent days the president seems almost to be suffering geopolitical whiplash.

The Birnbaum-Tibon megapiece in the New Republic on why the Palestinian peace process failed is as interesting for what it does not contain as much as what it does. (Snip) The only thing the Palestinians can actually do is fight. The only thing the West demands of them is to forswear the only thing they can do. The best alternative to a negotiated settlement for both Israel and Palestine may now be to fight to the finish, because that is the only thing each can do. President Obama told Democratic donors Wednesday night that most Americans don’t have time to think about the details of the Benghazi terrorist attack or the problems with Obamacare. The president’s demeanor is worrying a lot of people. From the immigration crisis on the Mexican border to the Islamic State rising in Mesopotamia, Barack Obama seems totally detached from the world’s convulsions. When he does interrupt his endless rounds of golf, fundraising and photo ops, it’s for some affectless, mechanical, almost forced public statement.
