Washington and Lee University to remove
Confederate flags following protests

Washington Post, by T. Rees Shapiro

Original Article

Posted By:Ribicon, 7/10/2014 4:02:13 PM

Washington and Lee University expressed regret Tuesday for the school’s past ownership of slaves and promised to remove Confederate flags from the main chamber of its Lee Chapel after a group of black students protested that the historic Virginia school was unwelcoming to minorities. President Kenneth P. Ruscio’s announcement was a surprising move for the small, private liberal arts college in Lexington, which has long celebrated its Southern heritage. Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee served as the university’s president after the Civil War, his crypt is beneath the chapel, and the school has gingerly addressed its ties to the Confederacy

Comments:
Shameful capitulation to a small handful of hyphenated (perhaps also affirmative-action) rabble-rousers. What´s next? Change the name of the school? Smash open General Lee´s sarcophagus and hang him in effigy?

Incidentally, Robert E. Lee was opposed to slavery (the person pretending to be the university president fails to point that out) and was pro-union until his home state was invaded and his hand was forced.

So... If a small handful of malcontents can get the confederate flag removed, how many normal people will it take to get the confederate flag re-instated?

What OP Said!!

Read Lee´s family history.

Knowing nothing else, I can on rather safe footing assuming the protesters are, at a minimum, affirmative-action enrollees who know nothing of our history.

It is sad that the descendants of those who fought in the war of yankee aggression had the Confederate Battle Flag hijacked by the KKK and their ilk. That said, if their is one place that flag should be displayed proudly it is certainly at the grave site of Robert E. Lee.

Well they surrendered today and tomorrow the Leftist come back and demand the name Lee be removed for leading the South. When they surrender on the name change they will come back for Washington for owning slaves. When do we learn their is no end with these malcontents. Draw a line in the sand like Travis did at the Alamo and hold your ground while Houston is getting ready.

It was the black man who sold the first black man into slavery and they are STILL doing it in Africa.

Get over yourselves, malcontents.

Let´s put this in perspective - 12 students complained - 12 out of an enrollment of over 2,200 - but, as usual administration capitulated! When the president capitulated one of the twelve said it was a good "first step." Did you get that - First Step! No surprise here, additional "demands" will soon follow.

This article looks like the WaPo is taking liberties in describing the real situation.

I don´t think WnL ever owned slaves.

Since Lee was left destitute after the Civil War - the Yankees had turned his wive´s Arlington plantation into what is now Arlington National Cemetery - and didn´t pay his family under the Constitution´s 4A takings clause till after Lee was long dead - I don´t think Lee left WnL any ´profits from slaves´ in his estate.

WnL undergraduates still adhere to Lee´s honor code of - a Gentlemen will not lie, cheat or steal. In my limited experience with a few of the WnL law students, being lawyers-in-training I don´t think they are held to adhere to such an antiquarian code of conduct.

Correct #14, it has nothing to do with race but I certainly don´t expect anyone born north of the line to understand that. We are more divided now than ever before and I´m sure both Lee and Grant are spinning in their graves over what has become of this country. I am totally disgusted with W&L. Their level of disrespect for American history is outrageous.

And Lee didn´t own slaves.
