IUD may carry higher risk for
breast cancer in certain women

Modern contraceptives have radically changed women´s lives, but they are not risk free. A new study out of the journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology finds the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) or progesterone-releasing IUD, may be associated with a higher than expected incidence of breast cancer. (snip) "It´s a great reminder that we need to weigh the benefits of some of these methods against the risks," said Dr. Angela Marshall, director of Comprehensive Women´s Health in Silver Spring, Maryland. "We need to educate our patients, because many of these therapies may work, but some could have serious side effects. Women need

Comments:
I read elsewhere that the drug levonorgestrel is also used in Obamacare covered Plan B. Do doctors discuss side effects for contraceptives? Do women even care about potential side effects?

The official party line is that although the number of breast cancer cases increase when birth control steroids became popular the real reason is just that more women got mammograms so more cancer was detected. pay no attention to the steroids - steroids are only bad for bike racers.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) used to carry these risks but doctors believed that the risk was small compared to preventing a stroke.....well that theory died without much fanfare.

All living beings (except some primitive forms) 1)eat, 2)excrete and 3)reproduce. These systems are subtle beyond ways that we can imagine.

If you get in the way of any of those three, expected the unexpected.

The risks associated with all forms of birth control have been reported on extensively. Doctors are careful to inform patients of them. The risks associated with the pill and several other forms of birth control are very similar but smaller than the risks associated with pregnancy. Because of this women often opt for permanent solutions to the possibility of getting pregnant.

Israeli official confirms US nixed

A senior Israeli official confirmed to Israeli media that the US had suspended a shipment of Hellfire missiles to Israel amid worsening ties over fighting in Gaza. The decision to hold off on the transfer was most likely on grounds of increased diplomatic tension, the official said, corroborating a Wall Street Journal report earlier in the day that claimed the White House and State Department had been angered by a transfer of arms to Israel and had ordered greater oversight into future sales. The report claimed that US-Israeli tensions are at a record high, with US President Barack Obama and

The global impact of climate change is “the biggest challenge of all that we face right now,” Secretary of State John Kerry told an audience in Hawaii Wednesday, putting an issue he feels passionately about at the center of a speech entitled “U.S. Vision for Asia-Pacific Engagement.” “The science is screaming at us,” he said. “Ask any kid in school. They understand what a greenhouse is, how it works, why we call it the greenhouse effect. They get it.” “If you accept the science,” Kerry continued. “If you accept that the science is causing climate to change, you have to

Cuomo’s Next Mission?

It’s nice to see Governor Cuomo make at this hour of crisis a visit to Jerusalem. He pointedly demurred from a visit with the Palestinian Arabs, saying his mission was to show solidarity with the Jewish state. It is a good, solid rejection of moral equivalency — and makes us wonder whether he’s the man to take on the left-wing of his own party. The fact is that the Obama years are the period in which the Democratic Party has emerged firmly as less sympathetic to Israel than the Republicans. This was well marked by the latest poll from Pew.

Tennessee court breaks winning

One after another, lawsuits were setting them up and courts were knocking them down. Following last year’s Supreme Court ruling that rejected the Defense of Marriage Act as unconstitutional, state and federal courts nationwide have ruled against gay marriage bans from coast to coast. It was a remarkable, uninterrupted streak of success for civil-rights proponents, spanning more than two dozen courts. Yesterday, however, we learned that the streak was broken. For the first time in nearly fourteen months, a state’s ban on same-sex marriage has withstood a constitutional challenge in court. A state judge in Tennessee ruled last week that “neither

He had committed to starring in sequels to the hugely successful Mrs Doubtfire and Night in the Museum, as well as comedy Merry Friggin’ Christmas, and the drama Boulevard. Conservatives may be the ones voicing the loudest outrage at the hanging of two gay Iranian men—but not because they’ve suddenly become supporters of LGBT human rights. The tragic hanging of two “sodomites” in Iran may seem, in theory, like an obvious cause for U.S. concern and U.S. action. (Sign a petition! Demand human rights!) Yet in practice, those most attentive to LGBT concerns may be the least eager to pick this fight. As Nina Strochlic reported in these pages Sunday, the two men, Abdullah Ghavami Chahzanjiru and Salman Ghanbari Chahzanjiri, were hanged in southern Iran on August 6, possibly

It was found beneath a huge burial mound near the ancient site of Amphipolis in northern Greece. On Monday, the California Supreme Court blocked an "advisory" ballot measure that Democrats had hoped to include on the November ballot, with a view to increasing turnout among apathetic voters. The Sacramento Bee notes that at the time the state legislature approved the measure, Governor Jerry Brown had released a statement condemning the measure while tacitly allowing it to proceed by not vetoing it. It’s official: Obamaism is dead. Hillary Clinton killed it. It wasn’t so much a mercy killing as an expedient one, but that’s politics in the best sense. The important thing is that she broke the Democratic omertà code by stating the obvious: The president’s policy of having America sit on the sidelines of a burning world is a disaster that threatens our national security. The power of her argument is confirmed by a report that a testy Obama called it “horses–t” to congressional leaders. She doesn’t name names there, but she’s been known to diverge from grassroots conservatives in these matters before. What would happen, though, if Boehner turned around and made a deal with Harry Reid on amnesty in September? One of the goals of Obama’s looming power grab over legalization is to scare Republican leaders with the thought that Latino voters will be so grateful, they’ll break even harder for Democrats in 2016. SWAT teams and angry protesters clashed in a small St. Louis suburb for a third day Tuesday, following the death of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown. The eruption of protests and violence has been a long time coming. While I certainly do not condone rioting, examining the conditions surrounding Brown’s death — and the deaths of several other unarmed black men killed by law enforcement recently — makes clear that community reactions like those in Ferguson, Mo., are bound to happen. America has continued to isolate poor black people in economically depressed neighborhoods under increasingly oppressive police tactics that breed
