A World Health Organization official on Thursday urged millions of Muslims making the pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, to exercise basic hygiene as mass gatherings pose risks of spreading the Middle East respiratory syndrome. The U.N. agency has recorded 827 cases of MERS and 287 deaths, mostly in Saudi Arabia. The virus is believed primarily acquired through contact with camels and spread among humans through body fluids and droplets. Hand washing and keeping away from coughing people are simple ways to prevent the virus´ spread, said Mark Jacobs, WHO Western Pacific region director for communicable diseases. There is nothing wrong with basic hygiene. Any infected scratch or wound might contain MERS. Coughing, not so much.

LOS ANGELES — President Barack Obama met privately Thursday with four former gang members and the head of a Los Angeles nonprofit that is helping them turn around their lives. The brief meeting with Homeboy Industries founder Father Gregory Boyle and the four teenagers who all served time for their gang-related activities took place after Obama´s speech at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. The teens stood in a semi-circle and the president approached each one, asked his name and age, and took a picture with him. Obama then gave them a short pep talk, telling them how he had been raised

(WASHINGTON) -- The House cleared a procedural hurdle on Thursday to set up a showdown between House Speaker John Boehner and President Obama next week. The House Rules Committee voted 7-4 to approve a markup of H. Res. 676, which provides authority to initiate litigation for actions by the president or other executive branch officials inconsistent with their duties under the Constitution of the United States. Next week, the measure will require a rule before floor consideration by the full House. A vote on the bill is likely to be among the final acts the House takes before lawmakers enjoy a five-week

John Kerry has spent much of this week shuttling between Middle Eastern capitals, trying to get Hamas and Israel to put down their guns in Gaza. For his efforts, Kerry probably did not expect to be suspected of being an armed threat himself. Yet that was what briefly happened on Tuesday, when Kerry was stopped by security guards as he entered Cairo´s presidential palace to meet Egypt´s president Abdel Fatah al-Sisi. Footage shows America´s top diplomat being "wanded" with a hand-held electronic scanner. It was a move that raised eyebrows among members of Kerry´s travelling press corps, who said the US

President Obama told Democratic donors Wednesday night that most Americans don’t have time to think about the details of the Benghazi terrorist attack or the problems with Obamacare. Speaking at a fundraiser at the Los Angeles home of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” creator Shonda Rhimes, the president took his usual shots at the Republican Party, suggesting its members are focused on the wrong issues and frequently “obfuscate and they bamboozle and sometimes don’t say what’s true.” And because people are not familiar with the intricacies of many public-policy issues, Republicans can get away with such obfuscation, he said. “The Republican

The initiative is aimed at raising awareness, especially among low-income families, about the importance of talking, reading and singing to babies starting from birth. Research shows that such activity can boost children´s brain development, vocabulary and school readiness. "The brain research is not only telling

PHOENIX - A condemned Arizona inmate gasped and snorted for more than an hour and a half during his execution Wednesday before he died in an episode sure to add to the scrutiny surrounding the death penalty in the U.S. Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne´s office said Joseph Rudolph Wood was pronounced dead at 3:49 p.m., one hour and 57 minutes after the execution started. Days before an Arizona murderer gasped and snorted for more than 90 minutes and died nearly two hours after his execution began, a conservative federal appeals judge called for replacing lethal injection with firing squads, saying the public must acknowledge that executions are "brutal, savage events." Among other criticisms, the panel’s Republicans say the law has exacerbated the belief that the government will rush to bail out big, complex financial firms the next time crisis strikes, rather than ending the ills plaguing the financial system. Mr. Frank kicked off his testimony by challenging the GOP’s “too big to fail”

That journalist was Lucinda Franks and while her latest book, “Timeless: Love, Morgenthau, and Me,” doesn’t have much to do about the Clintons, the part that does offers never before reported information from a 1999 interview with the former First Lady. On Saturday, more than 200 volunteers spread out across Vermont for the annual loon survey. He said 15 years ago there were around 100 loons. In 1983, biologists counted only 29. "It is a decent, stable population. I'm hoping that actually things do start to level out.

Death-penalty opponents say the execution of an Arizona inmate who took two hours to die shows that state experiments with different drugs and dosages are a callous trial-and-error process.
