Nikola Tesla, who helped
usher in modern radio and
electricity, turns 158

Newsday, by Carl Macgowan

Happy 158th birthday, Nikola Tesla. The anniversary of the Serbian-American inventor´s birth will be celebrated Thursday with cake and a flag-raising ceremony at his former laboratory in Shoreham, followed by discussions of his work at Shoreham-Wading River High School. Both events are free. Tesla, who was born July 10, 1856, in Croatia, has been credited with developing wireless technologies and devising some of the major components used in modern radio and electricity. Tesla achieved local fame in the early 20th century when he worked for about 12 years in a Shoreham lab called Wardenclyffe, at Route 25A and Randall Road.

Comments:
Happy Birthday Nikola. You are the reason something happens when I plug my power cords into outlets. You will always be my favorite mad scientist. Irony of ironies. You were the champion of AC and they named an electric car after you that runs on DC.

COLUMBIA – A drone carrying cellphones, marijuana and other contraband into a South Carolina maximum-security prison never made it inside the 12-foot-high razor wire fence, and authorities said Wednesday they are looking for one of two people accused in connection with trying to sneak it in. The search has been ongoing since April 21, when officials found a small, crashed drone in bushes outside the walls of Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, according to Corrections Department spokeswoman Stephanie Givens. At the site, Givens said that officers also found materials that inmates aren’t supposed to have, including the phones, tobacco products, marijuana

An Athens-Clarke County police officer shot and killed a dog Tuesday after it mauled a 10-year-old boy and then attacked the officer, the Athens Banner-Herald reports. Police responded to a home at 9:46 p.m. after the attack was reported. A 14-year-old boy told the officer his brother had been bitten in the face by the family’s pit bull, the Banner-Herald reports. “(He) was visibly upset about what just happened and expressed his desire for the dog to die,” according to a police incident report, the Banner-Herald reports. The victim was nearby, holding a towel to his jaw. “I observed a large laceration

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has called for an end to the fighting and bombing in Gaza. “Both sides must distinguish between combatants and noncombatants, and Israel must ensure that its use of force is proportionate in accordance with international humanitarian law. More immediately, all combat operations must stop, and Israeli troops should withdraw from Gaza,” Carter said in a statement released Tuesday. So far, more than 600 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed in the fighting, according to reports. The Israeli death toll is estimated at 29, including two civilians. Humantarian groups have also called for an end to

It always comes back to the dinner table with this guy. The 75-year-old Pakistani immigrant convicted in Brooklyn of beating his wife to death because she served him lentils instead of goat should get the minimum sentence, his lawyer argued Wednesday — because the lack of Pakistani food behind bars will be a hardship. “His inability to speak English and his inability to have Pakistani food will make his incarceration even more difficult than the average inmate,” defense attorney Julie Clark wrote in court papers seeking the minimum 15 years to life sentence for Noor Hussain. But prosecutor Sabeeha Madni

"All of the fees have been donated to the Clinton Foundation for it to continue its life-changing and life-saving work. So it goes from a foundation at a university to another foundation." Is the Name Kaffir Lime Racist?

If you’re an American, you might not flinch when you hear a certain bumpy green citrus fruit referred to as a kaffir lime. But in many parts of the world—most notably South Africa—the common moniker for the fruit, best known as an ingredient in Southeast Asian cooking, sounds heinously offensive. As Veronica Vinje recently pointed out on Straight.com, kaffir is “a horrible racial epithet, akin to using the N-word in North America.” So why are these limes called by that name? The K-word has a long, complex history, but how it came to refer to a type of citrus fruit is a bit murky. The Arabic word kafir was originally used to refer to

The woman filled the empty air by saying, “healthier.”

State Department spokesman Jen Psaki makes me psick. If you read P.G. Wodehouse, you know the “P” in her name is silent, as in “phthisis,” “psychic” and “ptarmigan” (as Wodehouse’s Psmith explains). And Psaki’s colleague Marie Harf makes me barf. Together Psaki and Harf give the catastrophic foreign policy of the Obama administration a lighter than air, Valley Girl kind of feel. It’s a novel use of expressive form. Paul Mirengoff explores their weightlessness in the adjacent post. As Paul recounts, Harf came to the defense of Psaki when Bill O’Reilly had the temerity to utter pslightly pscathing words about Psaki

There are moments in edited TV content when a keyed-in viewer can see a cut intended to make a “comfort edit”, smoothing out the narrative. In a few days president Obama will unveil his strategy to destroy ISIS to a waiting public. (Snip) However the basic outlines of the strategy itself have emerged from information already available to the press. A Los Angeles Times story suggests that Obama will rely on proxies to fight ISIS at three levels: on the ground, within the region and in the West. Kerry invokes comparisons to the Sunni Awakening, seeking to recall the days when al-Qaeda in Iraq was beaten by George Bush. Obama plans to organize the Sunni Arabs to fight ISIS.

Immigrant-rights groups reacted furiously Saturday after the White House made clear President Obama will not take unilateral action on immigration before November’s elections, nodding at the political realities of the issue as he punted on the key policy questions. With a number of key Senate races in GOP-leaning states, Democrats had feared that action now would anger voters and cost them control of the upper chamber, and had privately begged the White House to hold off on any move to halt deportations. But immigration activists said it’s the latest in a series of moves by Mr. Obama to shove their

Are you tired of being lied to yet? My guess is no... because Americans seem to have developed an infinite capacity for patience with a federal government that is increasingly mettlesome, mendacious and menacing.[SNIP] This last Friday night, an interview was aired which should convince American citizens once and for all that their government is not telling the truth about what happened in Libya two years ago. That’s been obvious to many of us for months, but despite the naming of a select committee by the U.S. House of Representatives to investigate what could have happened, what should have happened,
