Walter Russell Mead wonders if we are living in the shadow of another great war. In his piece “Have We Gone From a Post-War to a Pre-War World?” he concludes our comforting margins of peace are evaporating at an alarming rate. Could we run out? (Snip) But Andrew Klavan is convinced of one thing: if some great conflict breaks out, it won’t result from some dark plot hatched in Washington. Professor Mead thinks that though we live in disturbing times, there is so much that is different from 1914 that we cannot draw any exact parallels with events a hundred years ago."

Some seventy million voters stuck the USA with a leader who has no capacity for leadership, whose every policy is a failure. Can he of the middle finger rampant be shamed out of office? One wishes it were possible.

The Sorceror´s Apprentice metaphor is quite astute. His behavior gives him away. It´s why he plays pool and drinks beer with a crisis on the border. He just created the mess, he doesn´t know how to fix it.

I totally agree with Mr. Fernandez. The "Evil Genius" tag that many have placed on Obama is getting torn apart a little more every day, by the putz himself. Five and a half years is more than sufficient time to destroy America if you hold the position of top dog. Barry the Bungler has made little more than a large dent in our fender.

TAMPA — Investigators from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission say they have solved the mystery of what happened when an alligator bit a woman last month while she was in her canoe on the Hillsborough River. Andrea Reese and a friend, Morgan Fusselman, were vacationing from Youngstown, Ohio, when they decided to rent a canoe at John Sargeant Park on Aug. 7. The two women had paddled for about 45 minutes and were outside park boundaries when an alligator jumped partway into the canoe and bit Reese on the calf and thigh. The attack surprised wildlife officials because the

The sheer ruthlessness and ferocity of Islamic-style warfare was underscored by the decimation of ISIS’ main rival by persons unknown. (Snip) Once the “moderate” nucleus is gone — where we can define moderate as SOBs who are our SOBs — you are essentially forced to choose between alternatives defined by your enemies. People who imagine that playing the clandestine card is a cheap and uncomplicated substitute for traditional warfare should think again. The game Obama is trying to play is not a “safe” alternative. It’s as fraught with peril as anything else. It’s not that this proxy game can’t be

There is an unfortunate tendency to regard organizations like ISIS, Hamas or Hezbollah as a rag-tag agglomeration of mindless fanatics. (Snip) Churchill is full of admiration for the Islamic warrior, but he is brimming with contempt for its productive flank. The neglected, boring area of workaday life is the secret sword of the West. Ronald Reagan’s America beat the Sovs by outflanking them. Even though the Cold War was militarily stalemated in the late 1980s the Soviet productive front was wide open and the West rampaged through it. It was not obvious at first to people who counted only divisions,

The story goes that there was once a young Prince who, being inexperienced, was taken to the cleaners during a negotiation with his wily Vizier. (Snip) That progression turned out to be more than all the wheat in the Islamic world. It was certainly more than the Prince had in his kingdom. The Wheat and Chessboard problem is an object example of the dangers of underestimating the power of exponents. That property was invoked by Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit of the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg who warned Deutsche Welle that Liberia and Sierra Leone are now lost to

The punditry struggled to find something enlightening to say about president Obama’s strategy to degrade … defeat … inconvenience … manage ISIS — whatever you want to call it — because there was almost nothing to hold on to. (Snip) As I also predicted, Russia is already busy muddying the waters. “Russia blasts Obama for planned ‘act of aggression’ against ISIS as Iran and Syria warn he could trigger ‘first sparks of fire’ in the Middle East.” Russia, Syria and Iran are forming a coalition against Obama’s coalition. The phrase “first sparks of fire” are doubtless intended by the Russians

New Year’s Eve before January 1, 2000 was so long ago that it is hard to remember that it was the future. But the biggest difference for people who lived in what used to be called the First World is that the future now meant desirable poverty. This feature is called sustainability. Richard Epstein at the Hoover Institution has an interesting article on president Obama’s apparent reluctance to use certain kinds of force to defeat ISIS. (Snip) But too much of a focus on the president’s world view risks perpetuating the false problem between the doves and the hawks and emphasizing the bogus choice between those who are temperamentally inclined to peace and those who thirst for war. These characterizations are beside the point. In reality all good security decisions — even those that use war or violence as much as those which do not to attain their aims are ultimately violence

In a few days president Obama will unveil his strategy to destroy ISIS to a waiting public. (Snip) However the basic outlines of the strategy itself have emerged from information already available to the press. A Los Angeles Times story suggests that Obama will rely on proxies to fight ISIS at three levels: on the ground, within the region and in the West. Kerry invokes comparisons to the Sunni Awakening, seeking to recall the days when al-Qaeda in Iraq was beaten by George Bush. Obama plans to organize the Sunni Arabs to fight ISIS.

Nothing expresses Putin’s determination to humiliate Obama as much as the kidnapping an Estonian intelligence officer in Estonia and abducting him to Russia only hours after the president assured the Baltics of Western protection. Max Fisher at Vox says: “This is bad: Russia ‘abducts’ Estonian officer after Obama says US will defend Estonia”. Much of today’s commentary revolves around the president’s inability to articulate a policy towards ISIS. The president was pressed in Estonia to outline his plans amid multiple crises, especially in the aftermath of Steven Sotloff’s decapitation. This week, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) slandered a group of Middle Eastern Christians who were trying to raise awareness of their struggle to avoid a genocide in the Middle East. His cynical grandstanding was rightly condemned — but he was hardly alone. Cruz agreed to speak to this group, which included bishops of the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, ostensibly out of solidarity, but took the occasion to antagonize them over their insufficient praise for Israel, then smeared them as anti-Semites before dropping the mic. The Washington Free Beacon publicized this flameout — their publisher said the room

Voter turnout during last month´s primary races was a little too good in some counties, Arizona elections officials said Friday. Some precincts in northern Arizona tallied more ballots cast than there are registered voters, the Arizona Capitol Times reported. According to officials, errors made by poll workers and elections officials in Apache and Navajo counties led to the miscalculations. Initial reports from some precincts showed a turnout of anywhere from 200 to 400 percent. In Apache County, the Puerco West precinct reportedly had 100 votes cast, but only 23 voters are registered there. The voter turnout added up to 434

Former President George W. Bush put together a 48 member coalition for the Iraq War in 2003. 40 of those members supported military operations and 37 provided some number troops. In April 2003, the list was updated to include 49 countries, though it was reduced to 48 after Costa Rica objected to its inclusion. Of the 48 states on the list, three contributed troops to the invasion force (the United Kingdom, Australia and Poland). An additional 37 countries provided some number of troops to support military operations after the invasion was complete. Despite these numbers the liberal media continues to push the lie
