Obama in Denver: Eating pizza, shooting pool
USA Today, by David Jackson

Original Article

When President Obama gets outside and tries to meet real people, the White House likes to say that "the bear is loose" -- and such was the case Tuesday in Denver. During a night out in the Mile High City, Obama munched pizza with supporters, greeted residents on a downtown street, and shot some pool. First came a stop at a popular spot called the Wazee Supper Club, where Obama shared pizza with five people who wrote him letters. The president also roamed the restaurant greeting patrons, at one point complimenting a bartender´s multi-hued facial hair by saying, "that´s a

It´s so nice that there are no pending problems in the world (border, Israel, etc.) so that our royal highness can just hang out, have a beer, and shoot pool. Now he has to rush to Texas for 3 fundraisers. No time to check out the border.

They trail in vans or buses, chronicling the steps of the president email by email, often not allowing even the smallest of details to escape their updates. The POTUS pool reporter — a title held by everyone from the Washington Post’s White House correspondent to a general assignment reporter for an 8,000-reader newspaper — is there to give the rest of the world an up-close view of the president’s day-to-day travels. But when he’s on vacation, those can be limited. A review of the pool reports from the first week of President Obama’s two-week Martha’s Vineyard getaway shows that the

In a confident and impassioned speech, Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson spoke of the need for communication, understanding, and faith at Sunday’s Rally for Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO. Johnson began by apologizing to Brown’s family. “I wear this uniform, and I should stand up here and say that I’m sorry,” Johnson said to a long round of applause. “I’ll tell you right now, I came in today and saw people cheering and people clapping; this is what the media needs to put on TV.” Johnson replaced Ferguson Police Chief Jon Belmar after several days of over-militarized police

Obama’s Hubris is His Undoing

Historians will have the rest of the century to unravel the mess that is the Barack Obama presidency. While they can explore these years of foreign policy disaster and domestic malaise at leisure, the rest of us have 29 more months to see just how awful things can get before he slides off to a lucrative retirement. But those who want to start the post-mortem on this historic presidency would do well to read Jackson Diehl’s most recent Washington Post column in which he identifies Obama’s hubris as the key element in his undoing. The decision by one of Britain’s largest hotel chains to remove Bibles from its rooms has sparked complaints from Christians. Travelodge, which operates 500 hotels, says the Bibles were removed for “diversity reasons,” citing the country’s increasing multicultural influences, the Daily Mail reported. The chain reportedly said that despite the recent uproar, the decision to remove the Bibles was made in 2007. The company said in a statement that the move was designed so as “not to discriminate against any religion.” Now the Bibles, supplied by the Gideon Society, are available at the reception desks for guests to borrow.

Attorney General Eric Holder has ordered a federal autopsy on the body of Michael Brown. Department of Justice spokesman Brian Fallon said it will be performed at the request of Brown´s family in addition to the one conducted by the state. Fallon also said that the Department of Justice will still take into account the state-performed autopsy during its civil rights investigation of Brown´s murder. Last week, Holder announced the federal probe following protests and outrage over the murder of the unarmed black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri. They say a prosecutor could get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich, and this always seemed like hyperbole, until Friday night a Texas grand jury announced an indictment of governor Rick Perry. The “crime” for which Perry faces a sentence of 5 to 99 years in prison is vetoing funding for a state agency. The conventions of reporting — which treat the fact of an indictment as the primary news, and its merit as a secondary analytic question — make it difficult for people reading the news to grasp just how farfetched this indictment is. The Obama administration has done little to calm racial tensions as they spread from Manhattan to St. Louis to Los Angeles. Quite the opposite, some top officials have fueled African-American fears of racism with false accusations of anti-black discrimination. Attorney General Eric Holder’s race-baiting is no secret. Justice Department documents show the nation’s top cop gave thousands of dollars to help the Rev. Al Sharpton organize marches protesting the death of Trayvon Martin. Now he’s sent the civil-rights unit to St. Louis to do the same thing in the fatal shooting of Michael Brown. Less known, however, is the role of Labor Secretary Thomas

The scandal that erupted Friday night involved millions of dollars, statehouse power plays—oh yeah, and alcohol, police, and masks. Texas Governor Rick Perry was indicted Friday on charges of abuse of power—a first degree felony—and coercion—a third degree felony. The charges stem from a 2013 scandal that has been quietly rumbling in the Lone Star State as Perry has been floated as a viable contender for the Republican nomination in 2016. This is a complex case, which might be why it has not made national headlines the way other recent, state-level scandals (like Bridgegate, in New Jersey) have. Below, I have outlined

A grand jury in Travis County, Texas, indicted Governor Rick Perry today. Why? For exercising his constitutional prerogative by threatening to veto, and then vetoing, an appropriation to support the public corruption unit in Travis County’s district attorney’s office. This followed the arrest of the county’s district attorney, Democratic Party activist Rosemary Lehmberg, for drunk driving, after she was found “with an open bottle of vodka in the front passenger seat of her car in a church parking lot in Austin.” Ms. Lehmberg served 45 days in jail. The Travis County district attorney’s office has long been a cesspool of corruption.

Perry, an expected presidential candidate in 2016, is accused of "abuse of official capacity" and "coercion of [a] public servant" by publicly threatening to zero out a state prosecutor´s funding and then actually doing it.
