Mark Zuckerberg’s immigration
push hits brick wall

Politico, by Jessica Meyers

Original Article

Mark Zuckerberg’s immigration reform push had all the capital, connections and star power to merit success. But not even Silicon Valley could make this investment — and the Facebook founder’s first foray into national politics — pay off. Tech leaders poured millions into FWD.us, an immigration advocacy group that has dominated ad buys, launched elaborate hackathons and coddled conservatives in an effort to revamp the country’s immigration system. It galloped into the debate with the tech industry’s classic certainty but wound up facing the same obstacles that have halted reform for decades.

Sounds like the dogs (the American public) wouldn´t eat the dog food.

Even my liberal friends are waking up to the necessity for border security, and talking deportation like never before.

Zuckerberg is spending huge sums to improve education in Newark. That´s probably having as much success as the immigration push. Maybe he should have employees at Facebook adopt kids from Guatemala.

Britain will not be involved in another war in Iraq, David Cameron has vowed. The Prime Minister said the British government would not put be "putting boots on the ground" or "sending in the army" in its fight against the "murderous" Islamic State, formerly ISIS. However, he warned that terrorists trained by IS will cause “mayhem on our own streets” if the “political and extremism” crisis in Iraq is not dealt with. Michael Fallon warned that Britain´s mission in Iraq will last for months as RAF Tornados and surveillance aircraft are deployed to help "stop the advance" of Islamic State extremists. The violent advances of Islamic militants in Iraq is not an isolated problem but rather a “growing global challenge” that needs to be dealt with, the top American general in Iraq told Army Times. “We must neutralize this enemy,” said Army Lt. Gen. Mick Bednarek, chief of the Office of Security Cooperation-Iraq in a Wednesday phone interview. “This is not just an Iraqi issue. This is not just a regional issue. This is a common enemy issue that we’ve got to address.” Islamic State fighters have advanced across the northern and western parts of Iraq, seizing control of cities such as Mosul

This morning on New Day, Newt Gingrich came on to discuss Barack Obama‘s proposal to combat ISIS in Iraq — and, judging by his response, thinks that Obama isn’t recognizing that this is a problem of “radical Islam.” “Nobody wants to tell the truth,” he complained. “The truth is this is a radical Islamist group. They say openly if you don’t convert, we’ll kill you. It turns out they actually mean it. There’s no complexity…The president couldn’t even honestly describe ISIS last night because it goes against his ideology.” And, just to be clear, that ideology is that ISIS “has a very

On the day that sired the flames that came to consume his presidency, Richard Nixon stirred slowly and didn’t sit for breakfast until after 8 a.m. The White House was filled with relatives and friends that Sunday morning. They had gathered for his daughter Tricia’s wedding, which had taken place the previous evening among the blossoms in the misty Rose Garden (and amid anxious consultations with Air Force meteorologists). The affair was “a fairyland” to rival Christmas, an enchanted Rose Mary Woods, Nixon’s longtime secretary, told him. Nixon and his family rifled through the newspaper coverage of the ceremony. About a month after asking states for help finding temporary shelter for undocumented child migrants—sparking much handwringing over the issue—the federal government now says it no longer needs the help. In a Tuesday afternoon letter, a federal Health and Human Services official thanked Massachusetts for its offer of assistance, writing that “HHS is no longer seeking facilities for temporary shelters for unaccompanied children at this time,” due to a decline in the number of unaccompanied children apprehended by and in the custody of Customs and Border Protection. “Thank you for your offer of two Massachusetts facilities to assist with the humanitarian response

A second American infected with the potentially deadly Ebola virus arrived at Emory University Hospital on Tuesday from Africa, following the first patient last weekend. Both were greeted by a team of highly trained physicians and nurses, a specialized isolation unit, extensive media coverage, and a storm of public reaction. People responded viscerally on social media, fearing that we risked spreading Ebola to the United States. Those fears are unfounded and reflect a lack of knowledge about Ebola and our ability to safely manage and contain it. Emory University Hospital has a unit created specifically for these types of highly

We’re now witnessing the worst Ebola epidemic ever — and on your list of worries it belongs .?.?. nowhere. Here’s a rule of thumb about diseases: The rarer and less likely they are to kill you, the more hype they get. The New York Times ran more than 2,000 articles on SARS, which ultimately killed zero Americans. This is only the deadliest outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease because past ones were so tiny. At this writing, there have been 1,603 reported cases in Africa and 887 deaths. That’s too many. But every day about 600 sub-Saharan Africans die of tuberculosis, and contagious diarrhea

Now, four years after its discovery, scientists say they´ve solved the mystery of the ship hull found in the wreckage of the former World Trade Center site in lower Manhattan. The hull, originally found by archeologists monitoring the site´s excavation, has been traced back to colonial-era Philadelphia, according to researchers at the Tree Ring Research Laboratory at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University. Washington policymakers are bracing for a wave of corporations to renounce their U.S. citizenship over the next few months, depriving the federal government of billions of dollars in tax revenue and stoking public outrage ahead of the Nov. 4 congressional elections. So far this year, about a dozen U.S. companies — including such well-known brands as Medtronic medical devices and Chiquita bananas — have merged with foreign firms and shifted their headquarters offshore to avoid U.S. taxes, analysts say. Dozens of additional deals are in the works, according to administration and congressional officials, and other companies are quietly contemplating the move. Last

The latest round in Israel’s ongoing military battle is seemingly over. Now the diplomatic war begins. And this is a war that will be grueling, extend for a longer period than just four weeks, and be fought on various fronts. Israel has, historically, done far better on the battlefield than in the diplomatic arena that follows its wars. This was true in 1949, when Israel won the War of Independence but could not convert that into any form of acceptance in the region. It was true in 1967,

Violence continues in Ferguson, Missouri. It began on August 9 with the death of Michael Brown, an unarmed African-American teenager cut down by a white cop’s bullets. Peaceful demonstrations turned into looting, the local police went in with rubber bullets and tear gas, all hell broke loose and, eventually, Missouri’s governor pulled out the local police and sent in state officers instead. But the rioting only paused; it didn’t cease. But those who want to start the post-mortem on this historic presidency would do well to read Jackson Diehl’s most recent Washington Post column in which he identifies Obama’s hubris as the key element in his undoing. McDonald’s has a problem. For the first time in 10 years, the company generated less revenue in a month than it did a year before, and it’s not a blip. The world’s biggest burger chain has been posting lagging results for some time, particularly in the United States.
