BERLIN — The police searched the Berlin-area office and apartment of a man suspected of being a spy on Wednesday, the federal prosecutor’s office said, deepening the espionage scandal that has taken relations between Washington and Berlin to a new low. No one has been arrested yet and the investigation is ongoing, the prosecutor’s office said in a terse statement that concluded, “no further information can be given right now.” The statement did not specify that the suspect had been spying for the United States. Israel claims to have foiled

Israel claims to have foiled an audacious amphibious assault when Palestinian militants emerged from the sea north of Gaza. In footage of the incident released by the Israeli military, two figures are seen walking out of the surf on an Israeli beach north of Gaza near Zikim. At least four militants are then seen running over sand dunes apparently carrying weapons before being targeted and "neutralised" by Israeli missiles. The incident is being seen as evidence of the new capabilities of Islamic militants in Gaza, whose rockets in the past 24 hours have gone further than ever before – in one case

Sarah Palin seizes the media spotlight

There is simply no downside for Sarah Palin in calling for Barack Obama’s impeachment. She grabs a nice bit of media attention. She rallies her conservative base. She gets to talk about it on Fox. And since she holds no elective office, she doesn’t have to worry about whether her rhetorical broadside has the slightest chance of succeeding. In fact, the chances that the House will impeach a second straight Democratic president are extremely remote. But so what? Palin gets the issue and positions herself on the leading edge of anti-Obamaism. The former Alaska governor and Fox News contributor launched her attack yesterday

Conservatives have for a generation spent too much time complaining about the liberal dominance of popular culture, and too little making their own. But — as I argue in National Review this month — there is a growing countercultural revolt against the ingrained (and often unconscious) liberalism of mainstream popular culture, a revolt that has so far escaped widespread notice, though you can find some of it on Liberty Island, a website I founded that is devoted to the best in conservative fiction. After reading my introduction to this literary revolt, the editors of BuzzFeed asked me to suggest a

Today in smallpox, apparently: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday that employees at the National Institutes of Health found some vials containing smallpox sitting in a laboratory storage room in Bethesda. These vials were labeled “variola,” which the CDC calls “the severe and most common form of smallpox,” so that’s reassuring. The vials were discovered last week in an unused part of a storage room inside a laboratory operated by the Food and Drug Administration, the CDC said in a news release. They were found by employees preparing to move the lab, which has been operated by

Sen. Robert Menendez seeks probe of

Sen. Robert Menendez is asking the Justice Department to pursue evidence obtained by U.S. investigators that the Cuban government concocted an elaborate plot to smear him with allegations that he cavorted with underage prostitutes, according to people familiar with the discussions. In a letter sent to Justice Department officials, the senator’s attorney asserts that the plot was timed to derail the political rise of Menendez (D-N.J.), one of Washington’s most ardent critics of the Castro regime. At the time, Menendez was running for reelection and was preparing to assume the powerful chairmanship of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. According to

Daily Caller editor-in-chief Tucker Carlson said he would be shocked if the Cuban government concocted the story that Sen. Bob Menenedez had cavorted with underage prostitutes in the Dominican Republic -- an accusation brought this week by Menenedez´s lawyers in a new report from The Washington Post. "I really can’t assess it without more information,” Carlson told the Post. “It’s bizarre on its face, but also fascinating.” Menendez is asking the Justice Department to pursue evidence obtained by investigators that Cuban agents had planted the story about the prostitutes, which was first reported by the conservative website shortly before election day 2012. Here’s one thing you won’t find in Hillary Clinton’s book: a clear reason to run for president again. The “Hard Choices” book tour has had all the trappings of a warm-up for 2016, and even though Clinton insists she hasn’t decided yet, she keeps dropping hints that she has ideas for the future of the country. “You’ve got to ask people who want to run for anything, but particularly president, what’s your vision? What is your vision for our country, and do you think you can lead us there?” Clinton said at a CNN “town hall” forum.

Marc Ambinder explains why it´s safe to ignore Edward Klein´s new book about the so-called blood feud between the Obamas and the Clintons: A lot of Blood Feud is highly improbable. I cannot say that it is false, or fake-but-accurate, because I cannot know for sure, and it would be reckless for me to assert that this reporting is not true simply because some of his previous reporting has been soundly discredited. ... But I am struck by how deeply skeptical conservatives are about Klein, with master logician Rush Limbaugh questioning the truthfulness of his dialogue and Fox News hosts finding

The gun-control group founded by former New York mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (I) will begin surveying all federal candidates in the 2014 midterm elections on gun issues Monday as it tries to become a political counterweight to the National Rifle Association. This is the first big step by Bloomberg — who has committed to spending $50 million of his personal fortune this year to build a national grass-roots movement that will pressure lawmakers to pass more restrictive gun laws — to devise a political strategy heading into the November elections. Bloomberg’s group, Everytown for Gun Safety, is asking all Senate and House

You wouldn’t think, five years into the Obama presidency, that so many liberal Americans wouldn’t like America. A new Pew survey found that 44 percent of Americans don’t often feel pride in being an American, and only 28 percent said that America is the greatest country in the world. Respondents who “often feel proud to be American” were overwhelmingly conservative (from 72 percent to 81 percent depending on the kind of conservative). A majority (60 percent) of “solid liberals” said they don’t often feel proud to be an American. The polling data only proves what has been obvious for a

So much for secular stagnation. Thanks to the headline figures and revisions for previous months contained in the Labor Department’s jobs report for June, which was released a day early because of the July 4th holiday, we know that, since the end of March, the economy has generated more than a quarter of a million jobs a month. For June, the payroll figure was 288,000, well above economists’ expectations. During the past three months, the unemployment rate has fallen from 6.7 per cent to 6.1 per cent, and it’s now at its lowest level since Lehman Brothers collapsed in the fall

Sarah Palin on Tuesday joined a growing chorus of Republicans calling for the impeachment of President Obama, writing in a Breitbart op-ed that the influx of young illegal immigrants over the southern border "is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, ´no mas.´ " Mixed/careless metaphors aside, this is nothing but bad news for Republicans — especially four months until the 2014 election. Palin is hardly the first GOP politician to raise the issue of impeachment over the past couple years. Others include Sens. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) and Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Reps. Blake Farenthold (R-Tex.),

At Arizona State University, female students can earn extra credit by agreeing to not shave their armpits and legs for ten weeks. Breanne Fahs, a professor of women and gender studies, has made the special offer to her students as a way to encourage them to challenge social norms. “There’s no better way to learn about societal norms than to violate them and see how people react,” she told ASU News. “There’s really no reason why the choice to shave, or not, should be a big deal. But it is, as the students tend to find out quickly.” Female students looking to earn

Despite his continuous denials, some still believe that Mitt Romney will run for president in 2016. Speaking to MSNBC on Monday, Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, went one step further saying that the former Massachusetts governor will be occupying the White House after the next presidential election. “I think he actually is going to run for president. He probably doesn’t want me to say that. A hundred times he says he’s not, but Mitt Romney has always accomplished what he has set out to do,”

Enough is enough of the years of abuse from this president. His unsecured border crisis is the last straw that makes the battered wife say, “no mas.” Without borders, there is no nation. Obama knows this. Opening our borders to a flood of illegal immigrants is deliberate. This is his fundamental transformation of America. It’s the only promise he has kept. Discrediting the price paid for America’s exceptionalism over our history, he’s given false hope and taxpayer’s change to millions of foreign nationals who want to sneak into our country illegally. Because of Obama’s purposeful dereliction of duty an untold

WASHINGTON — Congressional Democrats said Tuesday that they had developed legislation to override the Supreme Court decision on contraceptives. The bill would ensure that women have access to coverage for birth control even if they work for businesses that have religious objections. The bill, developed in consultation with the Obama administration, would require for-profit corporations like Hobby Lobby Stores to provide and pay for contraceptive coverage, along with other preventive services, under the Affordable Care Act. The measure could be on the Senate floor as early as next week, Senate Democrats said. “Your health care decisions are not your boss’s

The book, in this midterm election year, is a strong rebuttal of the progressive ideology behind President Obama’s policies, which have been supported by Costco co-founder and director Jim Sinegal, a major Democrat donor and a speaker at the 2012 Democratic National Convention that nominated the president. President Obama evidently has decided not to put a human face on the crisis unfolding at the U.S. southern border—not even his own. The White House said over and over again Monday that Obama will not travel to the border with Mexico despite flying to Texas this week to raise money for Democratic candidates there. It´s certainly in part a political decision, one meant to avoid taking ownership of a difficult issue on which the White House would prefer to share blame. (Snip) In other words, if Obama goes goes to the border, he owns the problem. If he doesn't, he's blasted for a lack of leadership.
