Government Made 100B

Associated Press, by Stephen Ohlemacher

WASHINGTON -- By its own estimate, the government made about $100 billion in payments last year to people who may not have been entitled to receive them - tax credits to families that didn´t qualify, unemployment benefits to people who had jobs and medical payments for treatments that might not have been necessary. Congressional investigators say the figure could be even higher. The Obama administration has reduced the amount of improper payments since they peaked in 2010. Still, estimates from federal agencies show that some are wasting big money at a time when Congress is squeezing agency budgets and looking to save

That´s what happens when you have big bloated bureaucracies and a mentality that government is supposed to cure all ills and right all wrongs (perceived and real).

Dumb and dumber politicians never learn. Big goobermint leads to big fraud. The recent case in point is BarryCare and fraud subsidies that were handed out. Does anyone think that´s going to be paid back? No, just raise taxes on every one else to pay for it. I say take the amount out of HHS and the WH who perpetuated it. There´s no chance of getting congressional demonrats to pay for it themselves. The only thing we can do there is toss their arses out in each election cycle starting in Nov.

Senate GOP charts

Senate Republicans are planning aggressive action to intensify oversight of the Obama administration and move conservative legislation long stymied by the Democrats if they win control of the upper chamber in the midterm elections. Republican leaders are promising a complete makeover of the chamber that goes beyond changes in legislative priorities, according to knowledgeable GOP sources. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, expected to become the next majority leader as long as he wins re-election on Nov. 4, plans to return power to the committees and promote a freewheeling debate process that allows members to shape legislation through a vigorous

Last week, a mass email went out at Yale University (my alma mater) protesting an upcoming visit from Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a political activist and staunch critic of Islam. The subject line reads, “Dear Friends: More Speech, Not Hate Speech.” The email reveals that by “hate speech,” the writers mean what the Left usually means when they use that term: “opinions we don’t agree with.” Thirty-two student organizations signed the email under the leadership of Yale’s Muslim Student Association (MSA). That’s a revised number after the MSA was forced to reveal that its original list of 36 organizations was falsified. So,

LONDON -- Who won and who lost in Scotland´s independence referendum? WINNERS: The 55.3 percent of Scottish voters who wanted to stay in the United Kingdom. LOSERS: The 44.7 percent who disagreed. WINNER: Gordon Brown. The former prime minister broke out of what seemed to be a long sulk since losing the 2010 election, and delivered a barnstorming defense of the United Kingdom which gave the No campaign some badly needed energy in the final days. LOSER: Alex Salmond. The leader of the Scottish National Party, which exists mainly to pursue independence, went down fighting for what he called a once-in-a-lifetime chance to

Two U.S. jets intercepted six Russian planes that neared U.S. airspace off Alaska on Thursday and Canadian planes intercepted two Russian bombers that approached Canadian airspace, NORAD reported. A U.S. official told CNN´s Barbara Starr that officials in Washington think the incidents were related to the visit by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who talked to Canadian officials Wednesday and President Barack Obama on Thursday. The United States promised Ukraine $46 million in nonlethal aid for its battle with pro-Russian militants. The Russian aircraft flew within about 55 nautical miles of the Alaskan coastline and about 40 nautical miles of the Canadian coastline,

NEW DELHI -- At first glance, it looks like a diplomatic love-fest. There was Chinese President Xi Jinping, toasting the birthday of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a quiet dinner earlier this week in Modi´s home state. There were the two leaders, deep in conversation as they walked along the Sabarmati River, Xi dressed in a Nehru jacket. The men are full of praise for one another, and one another´s countries. Xi gushes over India as "an enchanting and beautiful land." Modi declares that their pledges to work together "will open big gates for progress and development in the world."

If you missed Mark Sanford´s tortured, meandering Facebook post about his various relationship and family troubles last weekend, I´m afraid you´re out of luck. The Republican Party´s Lord Byron apparently thought better of it and decided to take the post down. Maybe Sanford´s sons impressed upon him that he had become the single most embarrassing parent in America. Or maybe the South Carolina congressman suddenly realized that he wasn´t actually 15 and was under no compulsion to vent his conflicted emotions on social media. (If I knew how to do it, I´d insert a little "unamused" emoji face here.) Or perhaps Sanford

"I may be old and rancid butter, but I´m on your side of the bread," he proclaims from the altar. Unrepentant and unapologetic, Edwards is in church not looking for forgiveness. EDINBURGH, Scotland - Scottish voters have resoundingly rejected independence, deciding to remain part of the United Kingdom after a historic referendum that shook the country to its core. The decision prevented the rupture of a 307-year union with England, bringing a huge sigh of relief to Britain´s political establishment, including Prime Minister David Cameron, who faced calls for his resignation if Scotland had broken away. The vote on Thursday - 55 percent against independence to 45 percent in favor - saw an unprecedented turnout of just under 85 percent. If there is one thing that the Administration and Democratic candidates have in their favor going into the mid-term elections, it is that election day is November 4, and Obamacare’s second open enrollment begins on November 15. If the dates were flipped, there is little doubt that voters affected by Obamacare would wreak havoc on the politicians who imposed the Rube Goldberg contraption of exchanges on them. Despite having just tossed another $60 million out the window “to help consumers navigate their health care coverage options in the Health Insurance Marketplace,” the Administration will likely face an even more bemused and

Flashes of disagreement over how to fight the Islamic State are mounting between President Obama and U.S. military leaders, the latest sign of strain in what often has been an awkward and uneasy relationship. Devastating. That´s really the only way to describe Politico´s piece on DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz. (I hereby nominate her for Worst Week in Washington.) (Editor´s note: Three words -- Joseph. Robinette. Biden.) Based on interviews with DNC staffers -- both former and current -- the piece described Wasserman Schultz as something of a modern-day Tracy Flick: over-eager, disloyal and not shy about promoting her ambitions. It would be fair to say that she sounds like, well, a lot like other politicians. And this would be accurate. What was the Islamic State thinking? We know it is sophisticated in its use of modern media. But what was the logic of propagating to the world videos of its beheadings of two Americans (and subsequently a Briton) — sure to inflame public opinion? There are two possible explanations. One is that these terrorists are more depraved and less savvy than we think. They so glory in blood that they could not resist making an international spectacle of their savagery — after all, they proudly broadcast their massacre of Shiite prisoners — and did not quite fathom how such a
