Forgotten Vials of Smallpox
Found in Storage Room near D.C.

Associated Press, by Mike Stobbe

Atlanta - A government scientist cleaning out an old storage room at a research center near Washington made a startling discovery last week — decades-old vials of smallpox packed away and forgotten in a cardboard box. The six glass vials were intact and sealed, and scientists have yet to establish whether the virus is dead or alive, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday. (Snip) Officials said this is the first time in the U.S. that unaccounted-for smallpox has been discovered. At least one leading scientist raised the possibility that there are more such vials out there around the world.

Air travelers on Sunday can likely expect further delays and cancellations at Chicago airports as the FAA labored to return traffic to normal after an arson fire Friday at the agency´s Aurora radar facility wreaked havoc in the nation´s air travel system. Although the FAA said Saturday that technicians were working to complete a "damage assessment and timeline for restoration of services" at the Aurora facility, the agency did not specify when the air traffic control center, one of the nation´s busiest, would be fully operational. Flight cancellations and delays continued to slow travelers Saturday.

Syrian militant group al-Nusra Front has denounced US-led air strikes as "a war against Islam". In an online statement, the al-Qaeda-linked group called on jihadists around the world to target Western and Arab countries involved. It comes as the US and other nations widened air strikes against Islamic State (IS) fighters in Iraq and Syria. The Pentagon said jets hit the Syrian city of Raqqa on Saturday as well as IS positions near the Turkish border. Kurdish fighters have been defending the Kurdish town of Kobane on the Syrian side of the border since an IS advance sent about 140,000 civilians fleeing to Turkey.

Seattle cancer researchers are hoping that they will be able to use scorpion venom to fight deadly brain cancer through a new product called "Tumor Paint." For the first time, the Food and Drug Administration has approved the product, developed by Blaze Bioscience, for study in human trials in the U.S. During the phase one trial, the tumor paint will be used to on an estimated 21 people with a glioma, or tumor in the brain or spine. In theory the "paint" will light up the tumor with special florescent molecules that will allow surgeons to then remove cancerous tissue more effectively and safely. The tumor paint is created by utilizing a protein

Washington - The parents of Michael Brown said Saturday in an interview with The Associated Press they were unmoved by the apology of the Ferguson, Missouri, police chief weeks after their unarmed 18-year-old son was killed by a police officer. Brown´s mother, Lesley McSpadden, called for Chief Tom Jackson to be fired, and his father, Michael Brown Sr., said rather than an apology, they would rather see Officer Darren Wilson arrested for the death of their son on Aug. 9. Police in Oklahoma said Saturday they´ve interviewed the man who allegedly beheaded a 54-year-old woman at his former workplace. The Sahara is a harsh, dry climate, and even though it only averages three inches of rain per year, it churns out dust storms that spread far across the Atlantic Ocean and North America. Earlier this month, astronaut Alexander Gerst captured a picturesque view of one such dust storm from a window on the International Space Station. The ISS was over Libya at the time, and this storm reached hundreds of miles across the Sahara. We’re being had. Again. For six years, President Obama has endeavored to will the country into accepting two pillars of his alternative national-security reality. First, he claims to have dealt decisively with the terrorist threat, rendering it a disparate series of ragtag jayvees. Second, he asserts that the threat is unrelated to Islam, which is innately peaceful, moderate, and opposed to the wanton “violent extremists” who purport to act in its name. Now, the president has been compelled to act against a jihad that has neither ended nor been “decimated.” The jihad, in fact, has inevitably intensified under his counterfactual

When the U.S. military strikes, its leaders often choose colorful code names for the operation that sometimes stick in history, like Operation Overlord or Rolling Thunder or Desert Storm. Not this time. The U.S.-led air campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria doesn´t have a name. "I know of no plans at this point to name it," Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said Thursday. Since World War II, almost every U.S. military operation, large and small, has had a code name. Political pollsters have a tough job. They have to create formulas to determine if the person they are interviewing is likely to vote, and it is within this calculation that their reputations are made. Typically, those who are likely to vote in an off-year election are pretty set. They are the people who always vote in elections — with some motivated by specific issues. In a wave election, the number of those motivated by specific issues escalates, changing the electoral landscape as the candidates who are beneficiaries of this increased participation sweep to victory. The 2014 election is rapidly looking like something new
