Britain follows US in banning
powerless electronic devices from flights

Guardian [UK], by Ben Quinn

Original Article

Posted By:LittleHoodedMonk, 7/8/2014 6:56:53 PM

Airline passengers entering and leaving the UK on potentially any routes, including transatlantic ones and those connecting with mainland Europe, will be expected to be show that electronic devices in their hand luggage can be powered up, British authorities announced Tuesday in a tightening of aviation security. In response to warnings of a "credible threat", the US Transportation Security Administration announced on Sunday that passengers using airports with direct flights to the US could be made to switch on their mobile phones and other electronic devices to prove to security officials that the devices do not contain explosives.

Comments:
Sooner or later, the Western powers are going to have to make the decision to collectively go after these terrorist organizations and quit playing a "defensive" game with them. A ´credible threat" sounds like a clear and present danger meant to harm our transportation system. Can no one see our ongoing threats and then do something about them...now?

I have a feeling what we are seeing is more than a reaction to a credible threat. It´s panic. We know it´s coming and it can´t be stopped. There are thousands of crazed jihadists with western passports and ties to ISIL, al nusra and al qaeda in the peninsula. They want to strike us here and they want to strike Europe. There are rumors of new explosive devices that can´t be detected. Panic is setting in.

European court says CIA

Warsaw - The CIA ran a secret jail on Polish soil, the European Court of Human Rights ruled on Thursday, piling pressure on Poland, one of Washington´s closest allies, to break its long silence about the global programme for detaining al Qaeda suspects. The court said it had been established that the CIA used a facility in a northern Polish forest, code named "Quartz", as a hub in its network for interrogating suspected al Qaeda operatives rounded up after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Poland has always denied that the CIA had a jail on its territory, even as leaks from former U.S. intelligence officials, and a Senate investigation, brought more and more

UN Human Rights Council´s
unbridled hypocrisy toward Israel
Jerusalem Post [Israel], by Editorial    Original Article

The UN Human Rights Council’s ludicrous decision on Wednesday to open an international inquiry into Israeli violations that may have been committed during Operation Protective Edge in Gaza is outrageously hypocritical. This travesty of justice should be rejected outright by decent people and nations everywhere, as the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem beseeched. Instead of backing Israel’s justifiable right as a democratic state to respond forcefully to clear human rights violations by Gaza’s Hamas rulers both before and during the current military campaign, the international forum in Geneva chose to side with the terrorists.

Baghdad - Iraq’s leaders selected Fouad Massoum, a longtime Kurdish politician and former guerrilla fighter who took up arms against Saddam Hussein’s regime, on Thursday as the country’s new president, an important step in forming a new government that the international community and Iraq’s religious authorities have called for and described as crucial to confronting a growing Sunni insurgency. Mr. Massoum, 76, replaces Jalal Talabani, who has been president since 2005 and was seen as a rare unifying figure among Iraq’s many factions but has been largely absent from the political scene since suffering a stroke in late 2012.

The New York Police Department still can’t explain how a group of five individuals were able to hoist two white flags atop the Brooklyn Bridge, which is supposed to be heavily monitored. Police haven’t identified any of the suspects responsible or any motive behind the mysterious white flags — which would typically signal a surrender or truce — flying high atop the New York City landmark. “We’re lucky they just put a flag up there — and not a bomb,” a law enforcement source told the New York Post. “It’s an embarrassment.” Surveillance footage showed five individuals crossing the bridge about 3 a.m. Tuesday. Republican lawmakers said Wednesday their suspicions about Obamacare’s anti-fraud measures have been validated and it is “egregious” that 11 out of 12 government investigators were able to get subsidized Obamacare over the phone. Seth J. Bagdoyan, an acting director for forensic audits at the Government Accountability Office, told the House Ways and Means Committee the government is shelling out $2,500 a month, or $30,000 per year, for the false applicants. President Obama told Democratic donors Wednesday night that most Americans don’t have time to think about the details of the Benghazi terrorist attack or the problems with Obamacare. Speaking at a fundraiser at the Los Angeles home of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” creator Shonda Rhimes, the president took his usual shots at the Republican Party, suggesting its members are focused on the wrong issues and frequently “obfuscate and they bamboozle and sometimes don’t say what’s true." General Motors (GM) is recalling an additional 717,949 vehicles due to a range of issues, including loose bolts and potentially incomplete welding on some seat hooks. The carmaker has recalled nearly 29 million vehicles this year, most due to faulty ignition switches. The recall-related repairs are expected to cost GM $1.2bn (£700m). GM was criticised for reacting too late to the switch issue, but said it was "enhancing" its approach to safety. "We are bringing greater rigor and discipline to our analysis and decision making," Jeff Boyer, vice president global vehicle safety at GM, said in a statement.

In a potentially crippling blow to Obamacare, a federal appeals court panel declared Tuesday that government subsidies worth billions of dollars that helped 4.7 million people buy insurance on HealthCare.gov are illegal. The 2-1 ruling said such subsidies can be granted only to people who bought insurance in an Obamacare exchange run by an individual state or the District of Columbia—not on the federally run exchange HealthCare.gov. "Section 36B plainly makes subsidies available in the Exchanges established by states," wrote Senior Circuit Judge Raymond Randolph in his majority opinion, where he was joined by Judge Thomas Griffith. The NAACP Legal Defense Fund has filed a class action lawsuit against the city of Detroit for water shutoffs that members claim are racially motivated. The Detroit Water and Sewerage Department stopped service to about 7,200 buildings with overdue bills in June, compared to 1,570 in the same month last year. The issue gained national attention last month after activists appealed to the United Nations for help. The shutoffs are “being done in a discriminatory fashion,” the NAACP’s Veronica Joice told a local CBS affiliate. “They should at least take a look at whether there’s a better way to do this that doesn’t affect the most vulnerable citizens

On Saturday, more than 200 volunteers spread out across Vermont for the annual loon survey. The results of the survey are trickling in, but Eric Hanson of the Vermont Center for Ecostudies and the coordinator of the Vermont Loon Conservation Project, said there are many more birds now than just a few years ago. He said 15 years ago there were around 100 loons. In 1983, biologists counted only 29. "It is a decent, stable population. I'm hoping that actually things do start to level out.
