This is what happened when I
drove my Mercedes to pick
up food stamps

Washington Post, by Darlena Cunha

Sara Bareilles played softly through the surround-sound speakers of my husband’s 2003 Mercedes Kompressor as I sat idling at a light. I’d never been to this church before, but I could see it from where I was, across from an old park, abandoned in the chilly September air. The clouds hung low as I pulled the sleek, pewter machine into the lot. But I wasn’t going to pray or attend services. I was picking up food stamps. Even then, I couldn’t quite believe it. This wasn’t supposed to happen to people like me. I grew up in a white, affluent

A little reality check. This woman is very lucky - her husband did not run off and leave her and the twins. Imagine how our economy affects women whose husbands are cads - they never get back on their feet.

Yep... am living out that story myself. I developed thyroid cancer back in mid 2011 and its removal left me absolutely listless. Instead of my normal 15 to 18 hours a day, I was sleeping 20 hours a day and wondering why I was awake the other four. I saw multiple endocrinologists before I found one who could help.

I thought I was on the road to recovery when I suddenly had a problem catching my breath. ANY exertion at all left me breathless. Testing found that I have an ascending aortic aneurysm and had developed pulmonary hypertension. The aneurysm is 5.4 cm and needs surgery soon.

I finally got set up to have the surgery in early August on my wife´s Blue Cross when she began to pass out at work in mid January. After four months of extensive and expensive tests, they found she has a very aggressive form of MS (they think it is the Marburg variety) Her neurologist said that she couldn´t work any more. She had been an OB delivery nurse since June of 1973 and with her diagnosis, she became a liability to the hospital and they let her go.

Now we are working to get Social Security disability for both of us. It´s a lot harder than you might think despite all the younger people getting it for various reasons such as, "I can´t get up every morning and work so give me disability!"

We are living very close to the bone and we are doing our best to keep moving forward. I´m trusting God´s good graces to protect us until things work out. I found this article when I was the lowest I thought I could be and it made me feel better. I hope it will help you as well.

I struggle to figure out the meaning/benefit of the article. She fell on hard times, got assistance, was uncomfortable with the assistance, got back on her feet. So? Welcome to the real world.

Typical Post idiots commenting after the article. "If the Republicans had their way, this woman would starve!"

Is anyone else amazed how truly stupid many, many people are?

We´ve never owned a Mercedes and luckily we had managed to stay away from Food stamps but we have been devastated financially.

Work dried up in 2009. My husband has fought his way back up to about 1/3 of our 2008 income. We used our savings, lost our home and all its equity, and feel that after all the years of being responsible, we too don´t deserve this. The past five years have turned us from regular people to penny pinching misers. It´s devastating to lose your dignity.

I truly feel for you #2. The ONLY thing that got me through the five YEARS of emotional turmoil while we fought for the house was the knowledge that we had our health, and our kids and grandchildren were okay.

Tears and prayers are my life, and, it is the same for many of our friends. We send messages and articles and supportive messages to each other on a daily basis. While I didn´t get the outcome I wanted in all cases I can now find some peace in our little apartment.

I will add you and your wife to my daily prayers. Good luck to both of you.

At the end, she thanks President Obama for his extended benefits and other program that kept her afloat. Of course, it was his poor economic record that caused massive unemployment to continue in the first place. It´s like thanking someone who stabs you for giving you a bandaid.

In the article she wrote when someone loses their job and they are broke, they don´t think about selling their things... THAT would be my first thought. Downsize, sell, sell, sell, and continue to look for a job ANYWHERE in the USA.

To me, this liberal chick wanted to hang on to the status symbol, rather than buy a 2001 chevy.

For every Darlena Cunha and her husband who are ashamed, there are hundreds of others on the dole because of their irresponsible behaviors - having children out of wedlock, dropping out of school, doing drugs, binging on alcohol, wasting money on tats and bling. Those people are perfectly content with Section 8 vouchers, Obamaphones, SNAP cards and all the other largesse showered on them by liberal politicians of both parties.

There was a time when my wife and I qualified for ´assistance´. We had six kids and I had lost my job. While we refused to go on welfare, I did try to get some surplus milk, cheese, and peanut butter through the WIC program. The nice black lady at the Detroit WIC office explained to me, very kindly, that WIC is only for minorities...

A Mercedes C230 Kompressor (supercharger) is worth $8K to $10K, and was their second car (she mentions a Honda in the article). Get the Honda fixed (probably only needed a new battery) and sell the Mercedes. What are the maintenance and insurance costs on the Mercedes? That will leave plenty to buy baby formula.

The sense of entitlement and blind devotion to Obama is staggering. Does she think society let people starve and babies die before he was elected? Every homeowner in this country was hit by the Democrat-induced housing crash (Community Redevelopment Act, anyone?). And your job woes are the result of electing an economic illiterate to the White House.

I hope your babies get all the formula they need. And you keep drinking the Kool-Aide.

I fail to see how they exhausted every avenue. Most people that honestly find themselves in that predicament don´t have such a megaphone to complain about it. Also, grad school? Seriously? That´s your first thought when you get on your feet? How about job and savings and we will never go hungry again. Sorry. You have not convinced me to give you even a smidgen of sympathy. This is just an Obama puff piece. No thanks. Mercedes driving liberals drive me up the wall.

The only way that public assistance can be kept from spiraling out of control is social restraint. People must understand that it should be accepted only under the most dire need.

Fear of shame is a deterrent. Experiencing shame is an incentive to improve one´s lot and leave the program. Once shame is removed the roles increase proportionately.

This is not to proclaim that poor people are to be scorned and demeaned - far from it. We must simply be assured that we all understand that it is viewed as a temporary condition.

#2 I feel your pain. It´s worse when you are single and have medical problems.

Thanks to Zippy, I have been put out of business not once, but twice. Combine that with multiple medical problems and it´s hard to have any dignity left. The vast majority think when you lose everything you suddenly become stupid and lose your hearing.

All things nonprofit are created to help minorities. If you leave a message and sound white, you won´t get a return call.

There is a problem with this story. If you check, paper ´food stamps´ were phased out in the 90´s. She should have gotten an EBT card in 2008. Maybe she received WIC. Thank goodness she is young, healthy, have a two income household, the Mercedes, and is now a stay at home mom.

OK, so they´re stuck with the Mercedes (though #22 makes a good point; sell it for $8-10K and keep the Honda). Did she have to go to the WIC office in heels? And she couldn´t have parked her Mercedes out of view of the other WIC clients?

This article is cliched, formulaic, and highly manipulative.

#2, my prayers are with you.

Please don´t hesitate to get help with your SS disability claims. Dealing with the bureaucracy can be difficult to impossible for a "civilian." My dad, years ago, was unable to work due to serious heart problems. After encountering obstacles with SS, he hired a SS disability lawyer. They knew how to file the paperwork, and these firms are limited by the government as to how much they may charge for their services.

In addition, if there are any other programs that you and your wife are entitled to, please don´t be ashamed to apply. Yours are the sort of challenges that we all believe the help is there for. A close relative has been dealing with aggressive MS for a long time, and has had no choice but to apply for food stamps and HEAP, etc. Also, her SS disability status makes her eligible for Medicare, despite being much younger than 65.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall backstage. Debbie Wasserman Schultz had an awkward task at the Democratic National Committee´s Women’s Leadership Forum on Friday. IRBIL -In the part of his Sept. 10 speech on confronting the Islamic State that probably drew the least attention, President Obama mentioned the need to help Christians and other minorities, expelled from cities and villages in northern Iraq, return from where they came. “We cannot allow these communities to be driven from their ancient homeland,” he said. Obama got that wrong. Christians, of whom around 120,000 have taken refuge in Iraqi Kurdistan, will not be going home even if their tormentors suddenly disappear. That the money I save on interest by not having debt is better than any return I could possibly get by investing that money in the stock market.

When President Obama took office in 2009, congressional Democrats were euphoric. With control of the House, Senate and the White House, and high public approval for their new party standard bearer, Democrats eagerly embraced Obama and all the long-awaited policy initiatives he’d surely help them achieve. In that first month, congressional Democrats mentioned Obama during floor speeches 200 or so more times than Republicans. In the next year and a half, the parties referred to the president at similar rates, sometimes with the Republicans having more to say, other times the Democrats. The military is growing more “sensitive” under the Obama administration, Pentagon observers say, by relaxing long-standing restrictions on soldiers’ religious and personal liberties. The efforts by the Defense Department to adapt to cultural change go beyond the moves to end the controversial “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy and allow women in combat. In recent weeks, the Pentagon has backed off controversial hairstyle regulations that critics said discriminated against black women and made the phrase “so help me god” optional in the oath for airmen. Earlier this year, the military loosened its rules for soldiers who want to wear turbans or

Based on interviews with DNC staffers -- both former and current -- the piece described Wasserman Schultz as something of a modern-day Tracy Flick: over-eager, disloyal and not shy about promoting her ambitions. Flashes of disagreement over how to fight the Islamic State are mounting between President Obama and U.S. military leaders, the latest sign of strain in what often has been an awkward and uneasy relationship. Even as the administration has received congressional backing for its strategy, with the Senate voting Thursday to approve a plan to arm and train Syrian rebels, a series of military leaders have criticized the president’s approach against the Islamic State militant group. Retired Marine Gen. James Mattis, who served under Obama until last year, became the latest high-profile skeptic on Thursday, telling the House Intelligence Committee

The man who was the top Marine general from 2006 until his retirement in 2010 says President Barack Obama’s strategy to defeat the terrorist group the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria is doomed to fail. “I don’t think the president’s plan has a snowball’s chance in hell of succeeding,” retired Marine General James Conway, who served as the 34th Commandant of the Marine Corps during the end of the Bush administration and the beginning of the Obama administration, said at the Maverick PAC Conference in Washington, D.C. That rare respiratory illness sickening children around the country continues to crop up in new places. It has been confirmed in 22 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday, appearing in three states where it had not been previously: Georgia, Michigan and Washington state. These children are facing an uncommon enterovirus strain. While enteroviruses in general are quite common, this particular strain — enterovirus 68 — has not cropped up terribly often since it was first identified in 1962. It can cause severe breathing problems, a particular danger for children who may suffer from asthma or other

Shawn Donovan, director of the Office of Management and Budget, said on Friday that if you don’t believe in climate change and support federal spending to fight it, you believe the earth is flat. “The failure to invest in climate solutions and climate preparedness doesn’t get you membership in a fiscal conservatives caucus,” Donovan said at the Center for American Progress in Washington, D.C. “It makes you a member of the Flat Earth Society.” Donovan, who formerly ran the Department of Housing and Urban Development under President Barack Obama, is now in charge of the arm of the executive branch

The U.S Senate passed a bill Thursday evening that will give President Barack Obama the authority to arm moderate Syrian rebels, which is a key part of his plan to fight the jihadist group Islamic State (also known as ISIS and ISIL). Shortly after the Senate passed the bill, which was passed by the House on Wednesday, Obama spoke from the White House. "I´m pleased that Congress, a majority of Democrats and a majority of Republicans in both the House and Senate, have now voted to support a key element of our strategy," Obama said. Washington - The Secret Service is coming under intense scrutiny after a man who hopped the White House fence made it all the way through the front door before being apprehended. President Barack Obama and his daughters had just departed the White House on Friday evening when an intruder scaled the north fence, darted across the lawn and into the presidential residence, where agents nabbed him. The security breach triggered a rare evacuation of much of the White House, with Secret Service officers drawing their guns as they rushed staffers and journalists out a side door.

On Thursday In a session with the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Secretary of State John Kerry was asked by Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) whether America was at war in Iraq and Syria. (Video) Kerry responded: “If you’re more comfortable calling it a war against this enemy of Islam then please do so. We’re happy to call it that.” So its official: America is at war with the enemy of Islam. However, strange bedfellows arise if the Obama administration so chooses to uphold Kerry’s claim that we are at war with the enemy(s) of Islam. The following displays that Secretary

The French did for President Obama on Friday what they refused to do for his predecessor — they joined the fight in Iraq. Two Rafale fighter planes armed with laser-guided bombs “entirely destroyed” an Islamic State munitions depot and killed dozens of ISIS fighters, making France the first coalition country to make good on its promise to battle the murderous militants. “Other operations will follow in the coming days with the same goal — to weaken this terrorist organization and come to the aid of the Iraqi authorities,” French President Francois Hollande vowed. The French famously said “non” in 2003 when President Bush
