Legal challenges are mounting in a contentious race for the Legislature that has divided Minneapolis’ Somali community. Rep. Phyllis Kahn’s campaign filed a petition with the state Supreme Court on Monday alleging that a city election judge was biased toward Kahn’s opponent, Mohamud Noor. The filing comes just days ahead of a hearing on the eligibility of hundreds of voters who are registered to a Cedar-Riverside mailbox center. Kahn was denied the DFL endorsement this spring partly because of Noor’s ability to mobilize Somali delegates. (snip) The filing alleges that election judge Fadumo Yusuf asked voters at City Hall whether

Comments:

What do you expect from the people of minn. Once they elected franklin to represent them in the senate they lost all credibility as being serious voters.

President Barack Obama said corporate America has done well under his economic policies, telling the Economist magazine that chief executive officers should stop complaining about regulations and show greater social responsibility. "If you look at what´s happened over the last four or five years, the folks who don´t have a right to complain are the folks at the top," Obama said in an interview conducted last week and posted on the magazine´s website late on Saturday.

President Barack Obama is tapping into growing misgivings about tax-driven overseas mergers by U.S. corporations, issuing a new call to end the practice quickly and questioning the patriotism and citizenship of those companies. The push comes amid a developing trend by companies to reorganize with foreign entities partly to reduce their tax payments in the U.S. But Obama's election-year drive also coincides with increased attention to the issue by congressional Democrats, who are seeking to draw contrasts with Republicans and to portray them as too corporate-friendly. Obama was scheduled to address the issue in remarks

The decision by Sen. John Walsh (D-Mont.) not to seek election in November in the wake of a plagiarism scandal is the latest piece of good news for Republicans as they strive to take control of the Senate in less than three months. Walsh’s departure from the race came in the same week that two Republican senators — Pat Roberts in Kansas and Lamar Alexander in Tennessee — defeated tea party challengers in primary fights, ensuring that every GOP senator seeking reelection would be the party’s nominee. These past seven days typified the fates of the two parties this election

Barack Obama deliberately set out to lose the war in Iraq, and he did. He defied the advice of his joint chiefs of staff to secure America’s formidable military presence and keep 20,000 troops in country, and left Iraq to its own devices and the tender mercies of Iran. In doing so, he betrayed every American and Iraqi who gave his life to create a free Iraq and keep it out of the clutches of the terrorists. Iraq is now a war zone dominated by the terrorist forces of the Islamic State, whose rise Obama’s policies fostered. Both his secretaries

Bill and Hillary Clinton are making the most of their downtime in the Hamptons. The former U.S. President and his ex-Secretary of State wife were pictured this morning enjoying a stroll on the beach in Amagansett, where they are paying $100,000 to rent an $18million five-bedroom property for three weeks. The couple, who were accompanied by their dogs as well as a Secret Service agent, were dressed in very casual clothes, with President Clinton decked out in black SoulCycle shorts and green sneakers and his wife in a bright blue muumuu and slippers. Mrs Clinton, 66, kept her eyes shaded from the sun

Rosie O’Donnell, the past and future co-host of The View, on Friday reaffirmed her support of the 9/11 truther conspiracy theory. When asked by this writer if she continues to reject the idea that Muslim terrorists flew planes into buildings, O’Donnell tweeted in response, “i still do not believe the official story.” [See below for a screen shot of the tweet.] O’Donnell left The View in 2007 after battling with conservative Elisabeth Hasselbeck. On March 29, 2007, she promoted trutherism, saying of September 11th: “I do believe it is the first time in history that fire has ever melted steel. I

A terrifying jihadist group is conquering and butchering its way across big swaths of Iraq and Syria. Planes are falling out of the sky on what seems like a weekly basis. Civilians are being killed in massive numbers in the Israel-Gaza conflict. Others are falling prey to Ebola in West Africa. The world, in short, is falling apart. That’s how it feels, at least, to those of us who sit at a blessed remove from the death and destruction, but who are watching every bloody moment of it via cable news and social media. It raises an important question: In an

Political conservatives are the greatest threat to the nation, President Barack Obama suggested in a kid-glove interview with the New York Times. “The president mused, the biggest threat to America — the only force that can really weaken us — is us,” said the interviewer, Thomas Friedman. “Our politics are dysfunctional… societies don’t work if political factions take maximalist positions,” said Obama, who repeatedly claims to be a moderate stymied by the GOP’s supposed obstructionism and radicalism. “And the more diverse the country is, the less it can afford to take maximalist positions,” Obama added. That comment about diversity was

When he was running for re-election in 2012, President Barack Obama repeatedly took credit for ending the war in Iraq and bringing all U.S. troops home from that country. At the White House on Saturday, however, when talking about his decision to use military force against the al-Qaida-related ISIS terrorist group in Iraq, Obama said removing all U.S. troops from Iraq was not “my decision.” “You know I say what I mean and I mean what I say,” Obama said in Hollywood, Florida on Nov. 4, 2012. “I said I´d end the war in Iraq. I ended it.” That statement

A 40-year political career came to a close after Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie lost his bid for a second term in a stunning primary-election defeat by a fellow Democrat and state senator who defied party leadership to challenge the incumbent. A second intraparty fight for U.S. Senate was too close to call. State Sen. David Ige, once seen as an underdog, cruised to a decisive 35 percentage point win in Saturday´s primary after being dramatically outspent by Abercrombie, who also had high-profile endorsements including President Barack Obama. Ige said his win "proves that people power can be money power, especially in Hawaii."

An Isis commander at a terrorist training camp north of Baghdad accidentally detonated a belt packed with explosives during a demonstration in front of a group militants on Monday, killing himself and 21 nearby trainees. The accident was a source of dark humour for locals, with suicide attacks in public spaces having become an almost daily occurrence in Iraq. A bomber struck a falafel shop near the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Baghdad last week, and when told of the bungled training demonstration by the New York Times, Raad Hashim, who works at a liquor store near the site of

Frank Maloney, the former boxing promoter who guided Lennox Lewis to the world heavyweight title, is now living as a woman and plans to undergo a sex change. The 61-year-old told a tabloid newspaper she now lives as a woman called Kellie. Maloney, a twice married father-of-three, has been living as a female for more than a year and has begun hormone therapy, the Sunday Mirror reported. “I wasn´t born into the right body, I have always known I was a woman. I can´t keep living in the shadows," she said. The newspaper told in a six-page story how Maloney's unhappiness over her secret wish to be a woman had

Not every Yazidi resident in northern Iraq escaped before the Islamic State, formerly known as ISIS, captured towns in the region. The terrorist group told the people to convert to Islam or die, killed 500 of them, buried some alive, and took hundreds of girls as slaves. "We have striking evidence obtained from Yazidis fleeing Sinjar and some who escaped death, and also crime scene images that show indisputably that the gangs of the Islamic State have executed at least 500 Yazidis after seizing Sinjar," said human rights minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. "Some of the victims, including women and children
