Australia admits holding 153
Sri Lankan asylum seekers at sea

CNN, by Hilary Whiteman

The Australian government has admitted it has 153 people, including children, in custody at sea while it fights a High Court challenge to any plans to send them back to Sri Lanka. Until Tuesday´s court hearing in Melbourne, the government had refused to confirm or deny it was holding the suspected asylum seekers, in line with its policy of not commenting on operational matters under "Operation Sovereign Borders." All those on board are thought to be Tamils who left the Indian port of Pondicherry on a 72-foot boat in mid-June. They include three-year-old Febrina, whose image was released by a worried relative

When Russian President Vladimir Putin began referring to portions of Ukraine by their Tsarist-era name, Novorossiya, Russia hands expressed alarm. Novorossiya, or “New Russia,” incorporates the area of Southern Ukraine from Donbass to the present day border with Moldova. Some suggested that Putin’s brazen invasion and annexation of the Crimean Peninsula was a prelude to a much more significant land grab. They noted that Putin could have designs on the entirety of Southern Ukraine, linking Russia to the portion of Moldova known as Transnistria, an area which has been under Russian occupation for years and is already a de facto Russian

Opposition presidential candidate Marina Silva said that Brazil´s recession is very worrying and her government would work to restore the credibility of the country´s economic policies to recover investment and growth if elected. The Brazilian economy fell into recession in the first half of the year, a heavy blow for President Dilma Rousseff´s already diminishing hopes of winning re-election in October. Silva said she would limit increases in public spending to below the growth rate of the economy, and restore transparency to government accounts by setting up a fiscal responsibility council to oversee its expenditures. “We will be transparent. When Congress passed the Affordable Care Act, it required health insurers, hospitals, device makers and pharmaceutical companies to share in the cost because they would get a windfall of new, paying customers. But with an $8 billion tax on insurers due Sept. 30 — the first time the new tax is being collected — the industry is getting help from an unlikely source: taxpayers. States and the federal government will spend at least $700 million this year to pay the tax for their Medicaid health plans. The three dozen states that use Medicaid managed-care plans will give those insurers more money to

Under the government of deceased President Hugo Chávez, Venezuela used three legal mechanisms available in the United States to lobby and influence on decision making. For such purpose, the nation paid USD 20,722,646. In 1999-2014, state-run oil holding Pdvsa and its subsidiary based in the United States, Citgo Petroleum, have invested USD 4,433,933 and USD 5,483,993 respectively, in lobbying at the US Congress, for a lump sum of USD $9,917,986, according to Openscrets.org, a political liability center, and Sunlight Foundation. Both organizations track and break down data of the US legislature.

We would like to start by saying two things: one, that wherever we might have looked, all we could see was nothing but unmistakable signs of decomposition, from hospitals lacking syringes and grocery stores with fingerprint machines at checkout counters to our glorious Armed Forces officials trying to prevent the smuggling of flour bread and gas into Colombia, also keeping in mind the large number of horrific murders, something never seen before in the history of Venezuela. And two, an incapable government that has been fearful of taking the necessary steps to restore at least a bit of rationality to an

Buried in the fine print of the deal, which includes $7 billion in soft-dollar consumer relief, are a raft of political payoffs to Obama constituency groups. In effect, the government has ordered the nation´s largest bank to create a massive slush fund for Democrat special interests. Besides requiring billions in debt forgiveness payments to delinquent borrowers in Cleveland, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Oakland, Detroit, Chicago and other Democrat strongholds — and up to $500 million to

By now, President Obama´s remark that "we don´t have a strategy yet" has made the rounds. Republicans were quick to pounce on it, as well they should have. But while the White House went into damage-control mode, emphasizing that it was a reference to the lack of decisions about increasing military action in Iraq and/or Syria and not a lack of a broader strategy there, the damage was already done. As with all gaffes, the worst ones are the ones that confirm people´s preexisting suspicions or fit into an easy narrative. That´s why "47 percent" stung Mitt Romney so much, and it´s

That´s the result of objective research by Johns Hopkins University economist Steve Hanke. He has created a "Global Misery Index" based on the original inflation-unemployment misery index of the late economist Arthur Okun and the interest rate and GDP per capita additions of Harvard economist Robert Barro. The long-held idea that Europeans were the first to bring tuberculosis to the Americas when they arrived in the 15th Century has been thrown into doubt. Instead, a study suggests that the deadly disease was present in the area hundreds of years before Christopher Columbus made landfall. Genetic tests reveal that humans were probably not responsible for moving TB to the New World at all - instead, seals carried it there. The research is published in Nature. Johannes Krause, from the University of Tuebingen, in Germany, said: “Who would have thought seals were actually transmitting one of the deadliest diseases to

I guess he really was multitasking out on the golf course. The President’s team has been hard at work behind the scenes, coming up with a strategy … well, maybe we should say plan, to address the nation’s many challenges. Spurred by President Obama’s climate action plan, the Department of Energy is pumping out new standards for refrigerators, dishwashers, air conditioners, ceiling fans, furnaces, boilers, water heaters, lamps and many more appliances. The administration says the standards will not only help the planet but also stimulate the economy by saving consumers money on their energy bills that they can spend elsewhere. After what

ISIS is a cancer that must be stamped out, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry wrote Saturday in an opinion piece for The New York Times. Kerry called the Islamist extremist group, known for beheadings, crucifixions and terror campaigns against religious and ethnic minorities, a "unifying threat to a broad array of countries" that needs to be confronted. Short of world war, it’s rare that a chief executive goes through a foreign policy month like President Obama’s August. U.S. warplanes struck in Iraq for the first time in years, as U.S. diplomats struggled to establish a new government in Baghdad. Islamic State militants beheaded an American journalist in Syria and spread their reach across the Middle East. War raged between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. In Afghanistan, U.S. plans for an orderly exit at the end of the year teetered on the brink of disaster. Russia all but invaded Ukraine and dared Obama to stop it. Libya descended

On TV, incompetence is funny, sometimes hilarious. Jackie Gleason made a career of it on the old “Honeymooners” show; Tom Haverford is absurdly incapable on “Parks and Recreation”; and Michael Scott brought the Peter Principle to new heights in “The Office.” But in real life, incompetence can be dangerous, even life-threatening (think a real-life Homer Simpson actually in charge of safety at a nuclear power plant). That’s where America finds itself nearly six years into the presidency of Barack Obama. There’s no question Mr. Obama has all but checked out. It will take two decades to rebuild the thousands of houses destroyed during Israel’s assault on Gaza, according to a recent NGO report. At least 17,000 homes were obliterated or severely damaged during the conflict, with thousands more needing substantial repairs, according to an assessment by Shelter Cluster. More than 2,100 Palestinians, most of them civilians, were killed during the conflict. In addition 71 Israelis were killed – all but six of them soldiers. But the report on Gaza’s housing stock indicates inhabitants of the densely populated strip will face a severe infrastructural burden over the coming years.

Sam officially hit waivers Saturday at 4 p.m. ET when all NFL teams had to trim their rosters down to the league-mandated 53 players. From there, the other 31 teams will have
